Transfer Deadlines & Transferability of DS107 & MA101/103

The MHEC Transfer Policy says that any student with 56 credits or an AA degree “will not be denied admission to a MD public institution.” Students can be assured that a MD school will take them, but not necessarily the one they want to attend. The key is to apply EARLY for transfer, well before the published deadline. An application is considered late if the supporting materials are not in on time, so it’s especially important that transcripts are submitted by the deadline as well.

To advise on the side of caution, r
ecommend these application dates: Spring 2010 – apply by October 1; for Fall 2010, apply between November 1 and February 1.

Be careful when counting up transferable credits; doublecheck the transferability DS 107 and MA 101/103 and other non-standard courses at each school through ARTSYS.

Advising UMCP Spring Admits

  1. EN101 transfers only as an elective, but a Spring Admit can usually benefit from taking it.

  2. MA101/MA103 does not transfer to UM; however, all students must take a Math Placement test at UM, so the course could be useful to prepare for the test.

  3. DS 107 does transfer to UMCP! All Freshman Connection students take a similar Freshman Orientation course.

Use ARTSYS and the UMCP/MC CORE list to advise students

There is no maximum or minimum number of credits expected for students in the Fall; their admission is not contingent upon fall grades (a student could even take the semester off). Also, beware of Spring Admits waving Permission to Enroll Forms! Spring Admits do not technically "belong" to UM until they enroll in the Spring of 2010; therefore, Permission to Enroll forms are not valid until after the student has enrolled at the school issuing the form.

WDCE Pathways Reminder

Please give students a referral form when sending them to the WDCE Pathways folks.

Options for Taking MA105 and MA180

Students who indicate that they need Precalculus, MA180, should be advised of their options for taking MA105.

During the Fall and Spring semesters, MA105 is run as a half semester course. During the summer sessions, it runs the entire session. MA105 is also offered during winter session on the Rockville campus.
  • Students can take MA103 and MA105 concurrently if they take the MA105 in the second half of the semester. Students do not need special permission to do this.
  • Students can take MA105 during winter session if they are in MA103 in the Fall and then enroll in MA180 for the Spring semester.
  • Students can coenroll in MA105 and MA180 in a Fall or Spring if they sign up for a MA105 class in the first half of the semester. Students will need to be given a prerequisite override for MA180 and a comment noting that the student was advised to take MA105 in the first half of the semester should be entered. Counselors and advisors may enter the prerequisite override to allow this combination. Of course, if there are any questions, have the student see a math advisor.

Additionally, students who score between 53-59 on the Accuplacer Math test need only take MA105 to enroll in MA180. The same rules apply about taking the courses concurrently.

UMCP CJ LEP Trasnfer Requirements

Criminal Justice Contact information: http://www.ccjs.umd.edu/ 301-405-4729

UMCP's Criminal Justice major is a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP). Students beyond their first semester and those off campus wishing to transfer are required to meet the following gateway criteria prior to applying to the major:

  1. Completion of EN102
  2. Completion of MA113 or MA160 or MA181 or MA116 with a grade of 2.0 of higher
  3. Completion of CJ110 with a grade of 2.0 or higher
  4. Completion of SO107 (prereq SO101) with a grade of 2.0 or higher
  5. A minimum grade point average of 2.5 in all college level coursework is required.

_________________________________________________________________

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Only one “gateway” or performance review course may be repeated to earn the required grade and that course may only be repeated once.
  • Students may apply only once to an LEP. Students who are directly admitted and fail to meet the performance review criteria will be dismissed from the major and may not reapply.
  • Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00. Failure to do so will result in
    dismissal from the major.
  • Any student denied admission or dismissed from the major may appeal directly to the Assistant Dean of the College.

The University of Maryland offers a Criminology and Criminal Justice Program at the Universities at Shady Grove. This program is not a Limited Enrollment Program. Therefore students with 56-60 earned credits who do not meet the LEP entrance requirements may apply for admission to the CCJS program at the Universities at Shady Grove. For more information go to

General Studies Mailing

Just an FYI that we recently sent out about 2,500 postcards to general studies students that attended the Rockville Campus for more than one class during the Spring 2009 semester. The card strongly encourages them to come in for advising BEFORE June 30th in order to get their desired courses etc... We will see if we see a spike during June 2009 from the same period in 2008.

Admissions and Records Drop and Graduation Updates

Please let students know that they should view their drop deadlines for courses from their MYMC accounts. Summer courses have different refund/audit/withdrawal dates because of their staggered start times and days. While we have access to drop/refund dates in Banner, it is far better to have them know where to find this information now and in the future. Plus, it keeps us out of potential trouble.

Did you know that a General Studies Major can use the extra credits from a math or science course as credits toward their 24 elective credits? For example, a student takes a second lab science to fulfill the non-lab requirement. The extra one (1) credit will float down to the electives. Same is true for a math course with extra foundation credits. As always, let the official graduation audit from the records office be the final word.
