Alternative Placement Program
(APP)
Instituted
in FY17, APP provides an alternative pathway to placing college-capable
students in college credit-bearing courses. MC will place incoming
Montgomery County Public Schools students in college courses based on a final
semester grade of B or higher in one or more of the courses listed below.
Students who qualify for placement in college credit courses as part of the APP
are deemed as “college and career ready” for Maryland State Department of
Education reporting purposes.
o
AP Language and Composition
o
Honors English 12
o
Modern World History (including honors level or
higher)
o
Algebra 2 (any level)
As you may recall, last year
students received a letter and then had to visit the English and/or Math
department for an override for the College level course – so they could track
their success.
It is now a permanent program
(no longer a pilot) so it is now coded in Banner – so students do not need to
visit the English and Math departments for overrides.
The APPE (English) and APPM
(Math) will both have a test score of 80 in SOATEST in Banner, which means
students with these scores are college level (ENGL101, ENGL101A, MATH110,
MATH117). Counselors do not need to give an override based on this
coding.
*The score of 80 will expire
one year after the date of graduation. A script will be run daily to
search for scores that are older than one (1) year. APP Scores that meet
these criteria will be changed to a 70 to inactivate the score but to still
reflect that the student had that score. The student will then be treated
as a regular student.
Banner will allow students with APPE score of 80
to register for ENGL 101 or ENGL 101A.
·
Reminder:
·
If a student took AP
English Language and scored a 3 on the exam, s/he will have transfer credit for
ENGL101
·
If a student took AP
English Language and scored a 4 or 5 on the exam, s/he will have transfer
credit for ENGL101 and ENGL102
·
The student should
submit official AP scores to Admissions & Records to receive credit
Banner will allow students with APPM score of 80
to register for MATH 110 or MATH 117.
·
If student’s need a
higher level math course for their major (MATH 130, 150, 165, etc.) they will
need to use a different placement method: Accuplacer, SAT, ACT, AP Scores,
Transfer Credit, etc.
·
Reminder:
·
If a student took AP
Statistics and scored a 3, 4, or 5 on the exam, s/he will have transfer credit
for MATH117
o Other AP Math Exams:
·
If a student took AP
Calculus AB and scored a 4 or 5 on the exam, s/he will have transfer credit for
MATH181
·
If a student took AP
Calculus AB Subscore and scored a 4 or 5 on the exam, s/he will have transfer
credit for MATH181
·
If a student took AP
Calculus BC and scored a 4 or 5 on the exam, s/he will have transfer credit for
MATH181 and MATH182
·
The student should
submit official AP scores to Admissions & Records to receive credit
Additionally, here is an
email that John Hamman, Dean of Mathematics & Statistics recently sent to
Rockville Counseling:
All,
Sorry for the late afternoon
email, but since I was included in this chain I thought I would add a little
clarification if it is helpful.
The idea is that an appropriate
score in certain classes in high school will act the same as a placement score
taken here at the college. We have worked to make the system match as
closely to our other placement practices as we can. If a student takes
Accuplacer and gets a 45 on the college math section, this should look and work
very similar to earning an A or B in the final semester of an Algebra II course
at MCPS. The work we did to get to this point dealt with looking closely
at the alignment of the curricula at MCPS and MC. Because of this we are only
working with MCPS at this time and only students who come to MC the year
following graduation (or part of the dual enrollment program). All
students should be taking math and English in their first year and this is an
additional incentive to follow that rule.
For math students, if they were
able to read, write and communicate well enough to pass the Algebra II course
at MCPS with an A or B, they have been deemed ready for college level math so
no additional testing or documentation is needed. They can register for
MATH 110 or MATH 117. As Ever pointed out, if they are hoping to take
MATH 130 or MATH 165, etc. they will need to use one of our other placement
methods – Accuplacer being the most common even if it is not the best method.
Right now we have about 1,100
student records from MCPS that have been coded in Banner with the APPM and/or
APPE. As more students are admitted to MC, we will be asking for more
data from MCPS and then entering it into Banner. There are no letters or
transcripts necessary for this and we are asking everyone not to put in an
override for this program (even if they seem qualified) since we want to
carefully track the success of these students and will get all appropriate
records from MCPS. We can easily track anyone with an APPM or APPE code,
but not those with an override. It is very important to me that we have
the ability to track these students, gather data and compare it to our other
placements. I am convinced we can find better predictors for success than an
Accuplacer score, but we need evidence not just my conviction.
Thanks for your work with this,
John
