Assessment and Testing Centers: TEAS at MC

 Good afternoon, MC Colleagues,

I’m writing to share with you that Assessment and Testing Centers will offer the TEAS exam in-person starting May 1, 2023.

The procedures for this implementation have been revised to accommodate current testing patterns. Assessment and Testing Centers will offer in-person appointments for TEAS after carefully evaluating recent changes made by ATI remote services. ATI changed their online proctoring provider from Proctorio to Respondus. Respondus is a lockdown browser that does not offer live proctoring. Several test implementation issues became difficult to troubleshoot without a live proctor. In addition, Respondus created challenges for students with accommodations since it is not compatible with many assistive technologies such as Kurzweil.

Assessment and Testing Centers will no longer support ATI with TEAS online. However, ATI will continue offering TEAS remotely. We strongly encourage applicants to consider this format if they are looking for appointments that better align with their personal schedules. After completing their online exam, applicants can request that their score transcripts be sent to Montgomery College, or they can simply access their ATI account and print their test report to include it in their application package to MC.

Applicants will register with  ATI Website to create an account and find available TEAS in-person appointments at MC Assessment and Testing Centers. Applicants will be able to schedule a test appointment regardless of the number of attempts. Current trends show that applicants are not deterred by the cost of each exam and have several options to schedule a new attempt in-person or online anywhere this exam is offered. ATI does not offer any administrative tools to prevent applicants from taking this exam several times which makes it challenging for testing centers to monitor attempts.

Students with Documented Disabilities

One important reason to bring TEAS in-person is to support registered Montgomery College students that need to complete this exam. Assessment and Testing Centers will work directly with DSS Counselors to arrange all test accommodations.

Students must register with MC and follow current procedures to contact a DSS counselor before scheduling a test appointment. After meeting with MC students, DSS counselors will email the test accommodations to following mailbox: TEAStesting@montgomerycollege.edu Assessment Staff will coordinate with ATI to have the accommodations ready for testing day.

DSS students will need to register with ATI Website to select a location and date for their exam. If they need assistance with this step, they can contact us at TEAStesting@montgomerycollege.edu to set up a ZOOM call and walk them through the ATI registration page. We strongly recommend that DSS students that need a private room as part of their accommodations should schedule their exam in the Rockville campus. The Rockville assessment and testing center can accommodate more students in private rooms

Assessment and Testing Centers understand that DSS accommodations are not the same for all students. Please contact us if you have an accommodation request that requires special consideration.

I appreciate your patience with this lengthy email. Our webpage has been updated with information on this implementation: www.montgomerycollege.edu/assessment. TEAS information is located under the heading Additional Testing.

Thank you,

Guillermo

Resources for Internships

Information provided by Student Employment Services, Montgomery College https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/student-employment-services

What is an internship?

An internship is a professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work related to a student’s field of study or career interest. An internship gives a student the opportunity for career exploration and development, and to learn new skills. It offers the employer the opportunity to bring new ideas and energy into the workplace, develop talent and potentially build a pipeline for future full-time employees

Before Applying to Internships:

Create a Resume: This is very important because employers will look for a reason to hire you based on the skills and knowledge you have related to your major.

Be sure to include the following:

•Knowledge and skills you have in your major and “industry-specific” software, hardware, skills

•Education: list Montgomery College, High School, and any other college trainings

•Work Experience: paid jobs you have held

•Academic Projects: what you have learned in your classes

•Volunteer Experience: community-service or volunteer (especially within your major)

•Clubs and Organizations involvement

If you need help with creating a resume, email a Student Employment Services representative from your campus to schedule an appointment:

•Germantown Campus: Ms. Pat McGlone at pat.mcglone@montgomerycollege.edu

•Rockville Campus: Dr. Lucy Vitaliti at lucy.vitaliti@montgomerycollege.edu or Ms. Beth Reilly atbeth.reilly@montgomerycollege.edu

UMD Residency Classification

As you may know, UM sent Admissions Decision e-mails to students on Friday, April 14th to students who applied to UM by the March 1 Early Action Transfer Deadline.

Students may be coming to you to ask about having been classified as an “Out of State Resident” despite having lived in Maryland for a number of years.

Leslie Lindeman has provided this information for students to follow if they have questions about their Residency Classification:

If you have questions about your Residency Classification, please view the following links:

UMD Office of Undergraduate Admissions-Transfer Admission Decision FAQs

https://admissions.umd.edu/enroll/transfer-admission-decision-faqs

  • Q: I believe my resident status is incorrect. How can I fix this?
  • If you believe that your resident status is incorrect, please review our policy on student classification. To request residency reconsideration, please email oua-residency@umd.edu with the subject line "Recent Transfer Admit Residency Inquiry" and include your full name, date of birth and University ID (UID) in the body of the email. This process is strictly handled via email. Cases are reviewed on an individual basis and depending on the circumstances, can take considerable time to resolve as supporting documentation is often required. Our staff will let you know if/when documentation is needed as your residency is reviewed.

A student's UID number can be found at the very bottom of the admissions decision letter.

Maryland Dream Act:  Students who qualify for in-state tuition at Montgomery College through the Maryland Dream Act will need to follow the steps to apply for this program at UM on this website: https://registrar.umd.edu/Residency/resreclassmddreamact.html.

DACA and TPS recipients should email Residency Reclassification directly for instructions: resclass@umd.edu.  These students can also connect with Rocio Fergoso-Mota, Program Coordinator for Immigrant & Undocumented Student Life at UMD: undoc@umd.edu.

FAUV Code - Current Practice (SP23)

That is exactly correct regarding policy. I think the confusion has occurred with some counselors assuming (understandably) that when they see a degree listed in SOAPCOL it means that we've received an unofficial transcript.

As Stacey explained, the information in SOAPCOL populates based on what the student enters on the application. It's unverified. So, we can't put in the FAUV 035 or FAUV 055 code until we receive the unofficial transcript and confirm that the student has indeed taken an English composition class or received a degree. I hope that clears up the confusion, but if not let me know. I want to make sure we're all on the same page.

Thanks,

Leslie Casey

Acting Collegewide Director of Raptor Central

_____________

Guidance from 2010:

To answer the Collegewide Deans request to end the use of FAUX 003 and FAUX 005, Admissions & Enrollment Management has instituted FAUV 035 and FAUV 055 codes, beginning with the fall 2010 semester. FAUV 035/FAUV 055 will override assessment levels only. The new FAUV codes WILL NOT override any prerequisites. A FAUV 035 or FAUV 055 will be added to a student’s record upon receipt of the following:

 - FAUV 035: An unofficial transcript from an accredited US college or university showing a “C” or better in an English composition course of 100 or higher (overrides English/reading assessment levels)

 - FAUV 055: An unofficial transcript from an accredited US college or university showing a degree conferred with date (overrides all assessment levels)
