Resources for Internships

Information provided by Student Employment Services, Montgomery College https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/student-employment-services

What is an internship?

An internship is a professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work related to a student’s field of study or career interest. An internship gives a student the opportunity for career exploration and development, and to learn new skills. It offers the employer the opportunity to bring new ideas and energy into the workplace, develop talent and potentially build a pipeline for future full-time employees

Before Applying to Internships:

Create a Resume: This is very important because employers will look for a reason to hire you based on the skills and knowledge you have related to your major.

Be sure to include the following:

•Knowledge and skills you have in your major and “industry-specific” software, hardware, skills

•Education: list Montgomery College, High School, and any other college trainings

•Work Experience: paid jobs you have held

•Academic Projects: what you have learned in your classes

•Volunteer Experience: community-service or volunteer (especially within your major)

•Clubs and Organizations involvement

If you need help with creating a resume, email a Student Employment Services representative from your campus to schedule an appointment:

•Germantown Campus: Ms. Pat McGlone at pat.mcglone@montgomerycollege.edu

•Rockville Campus: Dr. Lucy Vitaliti at lucy.vitaliti@montgomerycollege.edu or Ms. Beth Reilly atbeth.reilly@montgomerycollege.edu

•Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus: Mr. Joseph O’Hare at joseph.ohare@montgomerycollege.edu

STEM Internship Coordinator hours at TPSS (Spring 2017)

I am pleased to announce that our STEM Internship Coordinator, Michael Mehalick, will hold open hours each week this semester in the STEM Information Centers at both the Takoma Park and Germantown campuses.  Students interested in internships or who have questions about transfer in the STEM disciplines are encouraged to take advantage of his knowledge and experience.  Many internships have deadlines in the next month or two so this is the perfect time for students to take advantage of this opportunity.  See the attached schedule for dates and times.

The Stem Information Centers are located within the Science Learning Centers on both the Takoma Park and Germantown campuses (TPSS - SN 101; GT - BE 244L).  Student staff in the centers are able to help students locate important information on transfer, career resources, scholarships, and the GT-STEP program as well as direct them to counselors, faculty, and staff for additional information.

Please encourage your students to stop by and take advantage of the resources.  Thanks -

Nancy
