The Social Work in Action (SWIA) program at UMBC-Shady Grove

I wanted to pass along an opportunity that may be of interest to your students. The Social Work in Action (SWIA) program at UMBC-Shady Grove is hosting two upcoming virtual information sessions in early May for students interested in social work and related fields like psychology, criminal justice, and sociology.

Below is a message from the SWIA team, along with a flyer that can be forwarded directly to your colleagues and students. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions to Ashley Davis.

What is social work? What do social workers do? Through Social Work in Action, you can explore what it means to be a social worker, learn from social work professionals, and explore what you can do with a social work degree.

The program offers peer-to-peer mentoring from students like you who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in social work. You’ll also work with faculty and staff who will help you navigate academic pathways and social work licensure. Social Work in Action will empower you to develop personally and professionally as you engage with local social work agencies and meet social workers in our community.

Cybersecurity and UMBC-USG

Thank you so much for the opportunity to speak with your advisors and counselors yesterday. I have attached the powerpoint (saved to Counseling One Drive under advising docs-->transfer) that I used and welcome any and all questions.

Regarding Dana Baker's question on UMBC's cyber track courses being helpful for students to receive Cybersecurity certifications, let me clarify.

"Courses, both required and elective, in the undergraduate cybersecurity track are intended to give students a breadth of computing knowledge and the theoretical and conceptual fundamentals of networking, operating systems, computer security, and related cybersecurity topics like malware analysis, reverse engineering, and more.  Our courses are not taught to any specific certification, but with some additional personal study, these students should be fairly well-positioned for industry certification exams like the CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) and Network+/Security+, among others."
Could you forward this information to Dana and the rest of your counselors?
Best,
Jeannette Kartchner

UMBC - Language Requirement

Hello everyone,

Did you know that UMBC accepts most languages as part of the 12 CREDITS requirement?  The language does not have to be in the Gen. Ed. Humanities requirements to be accepted.  Students can either take the CLEP or one of the test below, the NYU or the Penn State University or they can take the test at UMBC when they transfer. UMBC will also accept any additional credits that the student may have taken to complete their degree at MC (in addition to the language).  For more information:

I wonder if these tests can be taken at the Writing and RD Center, since they already do the one is SN.  I am including the Chair of World Languages, Prof. Ivonne Botello.

UMBC Eliminates their PE requirement

 Physical Education Degree Requirement Changes

Philip Rous, Ph.D. Provost
Katharine Cole, Ph.D. Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

We are writing to inform you of the status of UMBC’s physical education requirement for the undergraduate baccalaureate degree.

During the December 11, 2018 meeting of Faculty Senate, the Senators voted to support the elimination of the physical education requirement for all undergraduate baccalaureate degrees, effective Winter 2019 term and forward. This means that as of the Winter 2019 term, both currently enrolled and newly enrolled students will no longer be required to take physical education courses for their degree.

As a result of this resolution, all undergraduate degree audits will be automatically updated to reflect the new degree requirements. However, students who wish to remain under the prior requirements (have two physical education courses required for their degree), may request to have their degree audit/degree requirements reflect this choice (please refer to the FAQ page referenced below).

It is important to note that there will be no changes to any UMBC transcripts. The only changes that will be made will be to degree audits that will no longer display physical education courses as required for graduation.

While physical education is no longer required for the UMBC undergraduate degree programs, physical education courses will continue to be offered and students may elect to take a physical education course for their personal edification and for the health and wellness benefits.

For additional information, we encourage you to visit our Frequently Asked Questions webpage.

Engineering Course Equivalencies at UMBC

I wanted to share this exciting information. For students who wish to transfer into one of UMBC’s Engineering majors, the following will now apply:

MC’s ENES100 + ENES206 = UMBC’s ENES101
·         Minimum grade of B required for both courses for Mechanical Engineering majors.
·         Minimum grade of C required for both courses for Chemical Engineering majors.
·         Minimum grade of C required for both courses for Computer Engineering majors.

As far as MC equivalencies are concerned, UMBC natural sciences courses without lab will come in as NSNLDST (Natural Sciences Non-Lab Distribution).

Hello! I’m the transfer/articulation coordinator for the Biology department at UMBC and I also happen to teach BIOL 142, so Chuck directed your email to me. None of our intro core classes (BIOL 141 (cell/molec), 142 (eco/evo), 302 (genetics), 303 (cell)) have a lab associated with the class. Each of those classes has a 1-credit active learning “discussion” section in addition to the 3 credits of lecture, but it is not a lab. Our labs are all independent 2-credit courses and all majors must take the intro lab 300L plus one or two additional elective labs. Does that help?

Best,
Tamra

UMBC Biology

BIOL141 & 142 at UMBC not Equivalent to BIOL150 & 151

The Biology Chairs have brought to our attention that BIOL 141 and BIOL 142 at UMBC are 4-credit courses, but they don't have a lab component.  They are NOT equivalent to BIOL 150 and BIOL 151 at MC.

Scholarship Opportunities

Remember to refer students to the Transfer Scholarship Blog for information on scholarships! They can learn about scholarships like UMBC's- MARCU* which requires 60 credits, a 3.2 GPA, interest in the advancement of underrepresented minorities in sciences, and a plan to get  PhD in science or math areas.

Also all current MC students should apply for the MC Foundation Scholarship which can be found on the financial aid website in the Grants and Scholarships section.
