New Academic Forgiveness (AR 9.3) Regulation

I know there have been many questions about the Academic Forgiveness regulation. I'm happy to share that Carolyn Terry, Ernest Cartledge, and others finalized the process yesterday, and the form is now live online.

The process and form are available online here: Academic Appeals and Academic Forgiveness | Montgomery College, Maryland

Best,

Alice C. Santoro, Ed.D.

Acting Dean of Student Affairs

Academic Forgiveness (AR 9.3)

Instructions to students:

Students may appeal for academic forgiveness for past grades by completing the Academic Forgiveness Appeal Formnew window.  Students must meet the following qualifications:

  • The student received grades of D or F for these credits
  • The student has been absent from the college (excluding Workforce Development and Continuing Education classes) for at least 5 consecutive calendar years since the end of their most recent semester
  • The student has returned to the college and earned at least 6 post-return credits, which need not be taken concurrently; final grades have been submitted for each of those post-return credits; and a minimum grade of C was awarded in each of those classes

Requests will be sent for review and approval to the academic dean overseeing the program of study for the student in the Office of the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs/College Provost. Requests will be processed within 10 business days. Results will be shared with the Office of Records and Registration who will process the request and shall notify the student of the result in writing.
The decision of the academic dean to deny advancement of a request is final. No appeals to any committee are permitted.

Appealing 'F' Grade for NA

If at student is assigned a grade of 'F' for non-attendance, there is no need to submit an academic appeal.   Instead, students may go directly to the Tuition Refund Appeal.

If the professor confirms nonattendance and the student provides a reason to explain why they did not attend in the personal statement, Enrollment Services will provide a full refund and remove the grade.

Processing General Education Course Substitution Appeals

Processing General Education Course Substitution Appeals

Gen Ed Appeals are still being processed in one of two ways:

1)      DSS Gen Ed Appeals:  For appeals based on the presence of a documented disability (for example, a mathematics appeal), students should fill out the DSS Gen Ed Appeal form with help from a DSS counselor who will verify that documentation exists to support the appeal.  DSS Counselor Sue Haddad @ Rockville coordinates these appeals – she has access to the DSS Appeal Form Based on the Presence of a Disability and will consult with you if you have questions.  Completed forms require the signature of a DSS counselor, a department chair when appropriate, and are then forwarded to Sue.  A Gen Ed Appeals Subgroup decides upon each appeal by e-mail, so there is not a distinct deadline per semester, but earlier submissions are best BEFORE or early during the semester that the student hopes to graduate.

2)      Appeals for all other General Education Course Requirements (Foundation & Distributions) are to be completed by the student, signed by a Department Chair, next signed by a counselor, and then forwarded to Anne Schleicher at the Germantown Campus.  As a designee of Dr. Sanjay Rai, I review appeals, check for a historical precedence, and make a recommendation if appropriate before sending them on to Dr. Rai for approval.  If you have a question about whether an appeal has been granted previously / seems possible / or other questions, please contact me to discuss.
See the General Education Course Appeal Form here, and find it always by searching for “General Education Appeal Form” on the MC Home Page.  http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/uploadedFiles/EDU/Departments_-_Academic/General_Education_Program/General_Education_Subpages/GenEdAppealForm.pdf

Academic Appeals

An update to the Academic Appeals form has been placed online.

Note the changes on page 3:

Counselors are not required to make recommendations, however, they are required to sign the document to verify that the application is complete. Counselors may add optional comments if they feel their statements will help the student's case.

The document can be found here: Academic Appeals Form
