What is social work? What do social workers do? Through Social Work in Action, you can explore what it means to be a social worker, learn from social work professionals, and explore what you can do with a social work degree.

The program offers peer-to-peer mentoring from students like you who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in social work. You’ll also work with faculty and staff who will help you navigate academic pathways and social work licensure. Social Work in Action will empower you to develop personally and professionally as you engage with local social work agencies and meet social workers in our community.

New Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice (617)

Good evening everyone,

I'm reaching out to counseling chairs to provide information about the new Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice. The program code is 617, and it was just approved by MHEC in January. Students have reported to CJ program advisors that some counselors and records staff aren't aware of the degree, which is understandable given how new it is. Now that criminal justice has two degree programs--and because we were funneling transfer students into General Studies for so long--confusion is inevitable.

The AA in criminal justice is designed for ease of transfer to UMD. It contains all of the requirements in our current articulation agreement with USG with the addition of CCJS 222, which is a course that transfers as a direct equivalent. We've been in touch with our counterparts at the USG campus, and we're working on developing a new articulation agreement with them. They seem very excited about this new degree option for MC students. Additionally, we're working on other articulation agreements using the new AA, and it should satisfy transfer requirements for Towson, UBalt, and other local schools.

The AAS in criminal justice (314) remains a great option for students who intend to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation from MC, particularly if their career goals involve local law enforcement.

Although General Studies - SSAH may still be the best option for students in unique circumstances, the AA in CJ is now the preferred option for students who want to transfer and receive their BAs. If there is a way to spread the word to counseling faculty, we'd be grateful if you could do so. I'd also be happy to give a brief overview at one of your department meetings if that would be helpful.

USG Student-led Virtual Tour!

 Good Evening!

I am writing to share some exciting news! The USG Student Ambassadors have finally completed the virtual campus tour I teased last time we all met. You can view it at bit.ly/USGVirtualTour or on the top of the USG101 page. Many of you mentioned this would be super helpful to have in your repertoires to share with interested students, especially during the pandemic, so I'm hopeful this is welcome news!

I would be super grateful if you could share this with your fellow counselors and advising faculty on each of the MC campuses should they, too, find it useful in serving students. Justin - if there is a place for it on the MC-USG webpage, that would also be excellent.

Of note: This was a completely student-run project with minimal guidance from me, and both of the student editors, as well as 5/6 of the featured Ambassadors attended MC prior to USG, so feel free to take pride in this great example of what Pathway students can accomplish! :)

Warmly,

Jen

MC Guide - Applying to UM

 Hello Everyone –

‘Tis the season – students are starting to ask about how to apply to UM for next Fall 2021.  This “MC Transfer Planning Guide:  Completing Your Transfer Application to UM College Park or Shady Grove Campus” has just been updated.

The Guide is saved to the Counseling One Drive under: Counseling (CW) Discpline - Documents\Advising Docs\Transfer

Highlights to note:

1.      While UM will be giving Freshmen a choice to apply to UM through either the Coalition Application or the Common Application, TRANSFER students are to use the MyCoalition Application only.

2.      UM now calls their Priority Deadline an “Early Action Deadline” – but the dates are the same, Early Action Deadlines are March 1 for Fall, August 1 for Spring

Hopefully you will review this Guide to update yourself on other important topics like…

  • ·Proof of English Proficiency – it’s not just an associate’s degree!
  • · The Correct Two International Credit Evaluation Companies accepted by UM (hint, WES is not one of them L)
  • ·Recommendations, required or not?
  • · The process to request a fee waiver
  • ·And other trick questions that students will surely ask!

This page is not located on the MC webpage because it is not an “Official” guide but please feel free to send it to students who ask “How do I apply to Maryland?”

Cybersecurity and UMBC-USG

Thank you so much for the opportunity to speak with your advisors and counselors yesterday. I have attached the powerpoint (saved to Counseling One Drive under advising docs-->transfer) that I used and welcome any and all questions.

Regarding Dana Baker's question on UMBC's cyber track courses being helpful for students to receive Cybersecurity certifications, let me clarify.

"Courses, both required and elective, in the undergraduate cybersecurity track are intended to give students a breadth of computing knowledge and the theoretical and conceptual fundamentals of networking, operating systems, computer security, and related cybersecurity topics like malware analysis, reverse engineering, and more.  Our courses are not taught to any specific certification, but with some additional personal study, these students should be fairly well-positioned for industry certification exams like the CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) and Network+/Security+, among others."
Could you forward this information to Dana and the rest of your counselors?
Best,
Jeannette Kartchner

Yes. The best place I could think of adding it was the USG box in the Additional Transfer Resources page (since we don't yet have a specific USG page). A blurb about more information and the link to the new resource can be found there.

UMD - USG Smith School of Business

Please share the following with any MC student who has similar question. We ONLY enroll students in our program every Fall semester, due to the pre-set 2 year schedule we follow. It would not be possible for a student to start our program in the spring semester, because they would have missed essential first semester courses. FYI, below is information we share with prospective students asking about our program at Shady Grove and I've included a link to the schedule of classes students follow in the three majors we offer at Shady Grove. We require students to have completed 60 credits AND all of the required courses for our program, so it might be possible for the student to complete courses at MC over the January and Summer sessions at MC to complete the 60 credits even though the AA degree is NOT mandatory for admission. We often have 10-15% of students who return to MC in winter/summer after they enroll in our school to complete their AA degree.

The Smith School of Business is a competitive, limited enrollment program with specific GPA and courses required for best consideration of admission. Students who complete the program will earn the Bachelor of Science degree in one of three business majors and receive their University of Maryland diploma along with Smith School graduates at College Park.  You may learn more about the business majors offered at Shady Grove by accessing the links below.

The business majors offered at Shady Grove include Accounting, Management, and Marketing. Admitted students will enroll in our day-time program as full-time students, completing 15-16 credits each semester. Students enter the program every fall semester as a cohort group and are able to complete all courses for their business degree at Shady Grove. All business courses are taught by Smith School faculty. Students complete a four-semester, fixed curriculum with a specific course schedule for their business major. For MC students, here's a link to our admissions info. document and the second page contains a chart and checklist of all required courses with MC courses that match our requirements:

While the business degree received is the same for both campus locations, there are some differences in the Robert H. Smith business program at College Park and Shady Grove.  At Shady Grove:
 1. Students are admitted only in the fall semester. Due to the sequential class schedule, there are no students admitted in the spring semester.
2. The curriculum is offered as a full-time program and students who enroll commit to being a full-time student (12 or more credits/semester) for the duration of their degree. The program provides students with a course schedule to ensure graduation after four semesters and all classes are taught at Shady Grove..
3. The class schedule at Shady Grove is pre-set (see link to the two-year schedule for each major below) and is offered in a sequential 4 semester format providing 15 credits per semester as students pay a flat full-time tuition each semester.
4. Shady Grove is a satellite campus (no nearby student housing) with about 30% of Smith students commute from College Park and the surrounding area. Daily bus service is provided between the College Park campus and Shady Grove each semester.
5. BMGT core classes (BMGT340, 350, etc.) at Shady Grove are taught in smaller classroom sections, not in large lecture halls.
6. Student life at Shady Grove is vital to student success and there are several student clubs and organizations for students. Clubs offer both social events and professional development opportunities.

Advising in the Life Science Program

Course in three disciplines have been created that prepare our students to transfer seamlessly to the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) or to the Universities at Shady Grove (USG).  Maryland-bound students in the Life Sciences program should be strongly advised to fulfill UMCP requirements for the Biological Sciences majors by taking the following course sequences. These courses were developed in collaboration with UMCP faculty and are equivalent to required courses taken by UMCP students.

1)      Calculus for Life Science I & II (MC, MATH 170/171; UMCP, MATH 130/131)
·         Highlights the importance of  understanding  the fundamental concepts of Calculus through a life science lens
·         The College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) at UMCP recommends our MATH 170/171 sequence over our MATH 181/182 sequence.
·         Students in the Life Science program are strongly encouraged to complete two semesters of Calculus. Take both semesters at MC! The approach and textbook will be the same.

2)      Physics for Life Science I & II (MC PHYS 233/234; UMD PHYS 131/132).
·         Preferred physics sequence for Biological Science majors.
·         Students on a pathway that allows them to complete their first semester of Calculus with at least two semesters remaining at MC, should be strongly encouraged to take the Physics for Life Science sequence prior to leaving MC.  Required in the junior year of the Biological Sciences program at UMCP and USG, students who are mathematically prepared will benefit from taking physics as part of their sophomore sequence.

3)      Principles of Biology III (MC BIOL 252; UMD BSCI 207)
·         MC’s BIOL 252 transfers as the third of three “Principles” courses at UMCP and provides the foundation for junior- and senior-level coursework at UMCP and USG.
·         This course is a Biological Sciences program requirement at UMCP and USG (preferred over microbiology).  It is generally taken in the first semester of the sophomore year.
I encourage you to advise your students to enroll in these courses if appropriate.  Each transfer has specific and equivalent courses to UMCP and USG.  If you or your students have any questions or concerns about these courses, please feel free to contact me directly (240-567-1690 or james.sniezek@montgomerycollege.edu). Students are also encouraged to contact a Life Science Program advisor.  They are:  Dr. Gina Wesley, Rockville; Dr. Lori Kelman, Germantown; and Dr. Valerie Lantz, Takoma Park/ Silver Spring.

Public Health Sciences/Health Education Program Updates

I wanted to inform you that as of Tuesday November 24 MHEC approved the new AS in Public Health Sciences.  The number is 415.  This program accompanies the existing articulation with USG.  As of Spring 2016 no student will be admitted into the public health science program at Shady Grove unless they have completed the BS in public health sciences  here at MC.  USG will be working with students previously admitted under other majors to help them complete the program.

In addition there have been some changes to the existing health education program (186).  Chemistry has been dropped as a requirement (since College Park has done the same) and an additional health elective has been substituted.  This has adjusted the program to 60 credits.  This program transfers well to College Park’s Community Health major which has a behavioral health focus unlike the public health program which has a biological health focus.  In addition, there was a mistake in the catalog, students need to make sure that 2 of their chosen electives are at the 200 level (the catalog reads 1).  I have alerted the curriculum committee regarding the error.  Since there are other details in each program  which may impact the student’s choice of electives it is probably best if you send them to me for advising.  Thank you.  Edwards, Maureen

MC Counselor Newsletter- USG News You Can Use

Transfer Access Programs
  • Currently, Transfer Access Programs (TAP) include the University of Maryland, College Park Terp Transfer Partnership (TTP) and the University of Baltimore Bee Line. Stay tuned as additional USG partner institutions will likely be signing on to offer their own Transfer Access Programs next semester.
  • USG’s Transfer Access Programs in conjunction with MC have been a rousing success thus far. Recruitment for the Spring saw a record number of applications and MC students selected for both the UMD Terp Transfer Partnership (TTP) and the University of Baltimore Bee Line. Initial data from a review of the first year of the TTP shows many positive trends related to AA completion, MC GPAs, and GPAs upon completion of the first semester in the UMD program at USG.
  • USG’s Transfer Access Program Coordinator, Amandalynn Green, will be visiting the MC campuses throughout the semester. Amandalynn can be reached at agreen16@umd.edu. Please refer to the schedule below and encourage interested or current Transfer Access Program students  to set up appointments or drop by.

Scholarship Update

As most of you are aware, students at USG can apply not only for scholarships from their home institutions, but also from USG directly. For the Spring 2015 semester, we received 523 scholarship applications from students at USG and expect to award approximately $177,000. This represents a 46% increase in awarded scholarship funds as compared to the Spring 2014 semester. It also brings the total awarded during the 2014-2015 academic year to over $800,000!
