Advising About COMM 108 & COMM 112

We just received the message below from UM’s Smith School Director Luke Glasgow.  He has contacted us several times over the years about this issue – UM College Park will only accept 3 credits from only ONE course if a student takes both COMM 108 and COMM 112.

Unfortunately, many students choose COMM 108 as a GEIR and then also take COMM 112 as either a Humanities for Gen Ed or as an Elective for Business or other UM majors (including Communication Studies).  In fact, UM will only accept ONE course from COMM 108, COMM 112, or COMM 121 Public Speaking, as all three are considered to by UM to be the equivalent of COMM 107, their Oral Communications Gen Ed course.

Beyond UM, there are 5 other MD schools that also consider both COMM 108 and COMM 112 to be the same course upon transfer (UMBC, UMB School of Nursing, U of Baltimore, Hood College and McDaniel College – see the ARTSYS chart at the bottom of this message).

The MC Gen Ed Program Course List shows an “or” for the GEIR listing of COMM 108 or 112 on Page 1, and also shows “COMM 108 or 112” in the Humanities Distribution area on Page 2. Technically, if a student is not planning to transfer, then picking both COMM 108 for a GEIR or GEEL and COMM 112 for a Humanities is fine for graduation in many of our degrees.  But for the student headed to UM, as well to UMBC, UMB School of Nursing, or 3 other MD schools, taking both courses becomes a transfer problem as these institutions will only accept 3 credits if both are taken.

Telling students who have taken both that they must take another course in order to transfer to UM / UMBC / UMB SON with 60 credits is painful, especially if they are graduating and Financial Aid won’t cover the cost of taking an additional 3 credits over the summer or winter prior to transfer.

Any ideas you might have about how to more clearly advise students that only one COMM from 108 or 112 should be taken if transferring to UM / UMBC or UMB School of Nursing would be appreciated.   Providing a note that students should check the transferability of courses may seem like we’re covering the issue, but the reality is that students look to us, their counselors / program advisors / instructors, to guide them and we often are the very people who assure students that if a course is on the MC Gen Ed List, then it will transfer without question to a MD public institution.

This is NOT a suggestion to remove COMM 112 Business and Professional Communication as a General Education Program course, because for some majors, especially in AAS career degrees, this course is valuable.  Rather, the question is, how do we effectively let students know that if they are transferring to a four-year university, then they should probably take only one course from COMM 108 or 112?  A footnote on the Gen Ed List is one idea, but it still doesn’t cover the student who might choose a second COMM from 108 or 112 as an Elective.

Ideas?

Gen Ed Course or Not?

Question:

The current general education program lists do not list SOC 204 Sociology of the Family ( student took in 2014 ).

As SOCY courses currently listed of 100, 105, 208, 240 and 243 are categorized as GPC’s, may we assume such? Or is there a way to check.

Answer (from Anne Schleicher):

The fastest way to check whether a course fills a Gen Ed requirement is to run a Degree Evaluation for the student in Banner (Faculty and Advisor Menu).  If the course was a GPC Global Perspectives or * Multicultural in the semester it was taken, then it should fill in that spot at the top of the Degree Evaluation automatically.

And you’re right, the course had to be on the Gen Ed list in the year that it was taken, so just looking at a current list Gen Ed is not always the way to determine that.  Sometimes students will tell you “I’m sure I took a class for that requirement! (whatever Gen Ed category it was).”

The other way to look is to crack open the vaults.  You can look at Gen Ed Program Lists from many years past to see whether a course was Gen Ed at the time it was taken, these Gen Ed printable pages for students pages go back to 2015, just search for General Education on the MC Main Page to find this list again

https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/general-education-program/index.html

But in this case, because the year was 2014, you need to dive deeper into an archived Catalog and within that Catalog, search for “General Education Program”.  https://catalog.montgomerycollege.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=15&poid=3587 The Designators changed in the year 2015 from 2-letters to 4-letters, so looking for the course title is the best way to find the class, and you can see that the course is on the list as a GPC (designated with a * for Multicultural instead of GPC).

HIST260 - Fall 2020 HUMD Catalog Error

An error was recently discovered for HIST 260.  HIST260 is not a Gen Ed course and (HUMD) needs to be removed from the course description. The attribute was removed effective 201820, but the HUMD was not deleted from the catalog description.

As of 9/2/2020:     The description has been corrected.

General Education Committee - Fall 2019 Update

Hi All,

My name is Kimberly Yost and I will be serving as the Gen. Ed committee chair.

We wanted to share with you the release of the new external  Gen. Ed website for students.

For Gen. Ed appeals the PDF paper form is still on the website but that will be updated to an online form once it is complete and through IT. Date TBA we are in the finalization process and then there will be a waiting process.

There will be an internal site for faculty but it will be behind the firewall since there will be some information on there that will not be accessible to others outside of MC with certification of the Gen Ed courses.

Mark Levine will be sitting on the committee to communicate all information to and from the Gen. Ed committee so always feel free to contact him.

Keep in mind you can always contact me as well. If you ever need me to come talk about Gen. Ed to meetings or anything you need please let me know.

For reference also the Gen. Ed mailbox is always available to email. This is where the students can email as it keeps a record of everything for them and we check it consistently.

Looking forward to working with you.
Thanks so much.
Respectfully,
Kimberly Yost, Gen. Ed chair

General Education Course List 2017-18 - Removed Courses

With Registration in full swing, this seems like a good time to remind everyone of the slight but important changes to the MC General Education Program List for 2017-18.   Below is an update to the Memo sent in August -

MEMO REGARDING the NINETEEN COURSES THAT HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE 2017-18 GENERAL EDUCATION COURSE LIST:

Subject: Transfer Advising/MC Gen Ed List     Sent Fall 2017; updated for Spring 2018 on 11/6/17 - see below!

This message comes from the TRANSFER ADVISING perspective; it is not an official message from the MC General Education Committee.

For the first time in many years, some courses have been removed from the MC General Education Program.  You can see the list of removed courses for 2017-18 below in this message.

Counselors and advisers should be using th
e New Updated 2017-18 Gen Ed List with Transfer Advising Notes when working with ALL students during advising sessions; please do NOT use the older lists when helping students choose classes.
Link:  General Education Course List  Please print out and use 2017-18 when working with ALL students regardless of year entered.

The “rule” on Gen Ed is different from the “Seven Year Rule” for Catalog DEGREE requirements.  Students may follow the Degree (Major/Program) Requirements of any MC major for 7 years from the year that they enter MC, but this “7 Year Rule” does NOT apply to General Education courses.  General Education Courses can only count if the course is labeled as a Gen Ed course during the semester that it is taken.  This means that for yellow highlighted courses listed below, if they are taken in Fall 2017 or thereafter, they will not count as a General Education Requirement because they have been removed from the list.

Why aren’t Gen Ed courses based on the year a student started?   It’s partly a technicality:  a course can’t be labeled or carry the Gen Ed “attribute” for some students and not for others depending on the year that a student enrolled.  A course either has a Gen Ed attribute or it doesn’t, and Banner can’t sense a student’s starting date to make the distinction.  The other reason is that the Gen Ed Committee reviewed each course carefully and based decisions on a combination of content, assignments, transferability, etc.  Many disciplines (not the GE Committee) voluntarily decided not to offer courses again as Gen Ed so the decision may also have been discipline-based (MATH 182, some ENGL & HIST, upper-level languages, etc.).

What happens if a student keeps following their earlier Gen Ed list and takes a course in error?  Students may file a Gen Ed Appeal to use the course – but we should be vigilant about cautioning students also.

Here are the affected courses- removed from General Education for Fall 2017 and thereafter:

The Syllabus for each Removed Course should state that the course NO LONGER FULFILLS a General Education Requirement -

Gen Ed Program 2 Update Page

There’s an update to the General Education Transfer Advising Page for MC’s Gen Ed Program 2 – the only change is the addition of multiple HLTH courses within the GEIR section on the first page.   This new version is located on the Transfer Page at this link:

Yes, we still have 2 Gen Ed programs for students this 2016-17 academic year - next year, all students new to MC will be under Program 2.

2016-17 Gen Ed

Here is the link to the 2016-17 Gen Ed Lists:  http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/EDU/Plain.aspx?id=44793

A few points to remember:  Students who started this Summer through Summer II may follow Program 1 which has more offerings in Health.  BE CAREFUL with students who start at MC for the first time this Fall  who are following Program 2 – the ONLY HLTH courses that work for Gen Ed are:
1.       HLTH 131 Drugs & Lifestyle. Wellness (GEIR)
2.       HLTH 160 Science & Theory of Health (GEIR)
3.       HLTH 170 Introduction to Aging (GEIR)
4.       HLTH 212 Controlling Stress & Tension (GEIR)
5.       HLTH 225 Intro. Health Behaviors (GEIR)

When students are choosing a Gen Ed COMM, please be aware that it says COMM 108 OR COMM 112.  UMCP considers both courses to be equivalent to their COMM 107, so students should NOT take both for a transfer to UMCP because only 3 credits will transfer.
