Maryland School of Pharmacy

Dear Colleagues,

I want to pass along important information that the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy is no longer accepting PharmD applicants for the Shady Grove campus. As of fall of 2018 all students who apply to the program are admitted to the Baltimore campus.  If anyone has any questions feel free to contact Lisa Finn.  Her contact information is below.  There is also information regarding this change on the MC Transfer website under the Additional Resources page.  Thanks Joan

Howard University - SHPEP Program

Please see the information below and the flyer attached about the Summer Health Professions Education Program {SHPEP} at Howard University. The application cycle closes on 02/15/18, so feel free to share this information with your students, colleagues etc.

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a FREE summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage. SHPEP, formerly known as the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), expanded in 2016 to include a broader array of health professions, including medical and dental programs, nursing, pharmacy, physician assistant, and public health.

Please feel free to reach out to Lori Fenner, Program Manager at Howard, with questions. She can be reached at lori.fenner@howard.edu or 202.806.0366.

MATH217 - Biostatistics

Are you aware of the new Biostatistics course that the MATH department now offers?  This course should meet the need of the School of Pharmacy’s degree requirements and has been approved by CCC as an elective in the Life Science program (although the catalog does not reflect this yet).  Students should be advised to take MATH 217 rather than 117 when possible.
All the best,
Jim

MATH 217 - Biostatistics

A course in statistical methods for students in biology and the health sciences. The course will explore foundational concepts and applications in descriptive and inferential statistics including: conditional probability, sampling distribution, estimation, odds ratios, formal probability distributions (e.g., binomial, Gaussian and Poisson), confidence intervals, hypothesis testing (e.g., t-tests, Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, ANOVA, chi-square tests), correlation, simple and multiple linear regression, relative risk, and logistic regression. Coursework will rely heavily on technology in order to focus on the applications of statistical concepts and methods within the health sciences and biology areas. PRE- or COREQUISITE(S): MATH 150 or MATH 170 or MATH 181 or consent of department. Three hours each week.

Expansion on the Howard University/MC COE Program Grant Initiative

This is to inform you about an ongoing partnership program between Howard University and Montgomery College. This grant initiative has been on since September 2000. I am delighted to inform you that MC has been able to transfer so many students especially from the TPSS campus to the COE Nursing and Pharmacy programs, from 200 till date.  I have attached a background information about the COE and some of the program opportunities available to our students.

For Pre-Pharmacy students, COE has a PCAT prep Program where students will be provided a discount to participate. PCAT prep cost $725.oo, MC students would pay $300.00.
·
Students must be a permanent Resident or US citizen with an interest in Pharmacy. However, COE is open to students also interested in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing or the Allied Health Sciences.  Economically Disadvantaged students are also eligible.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions and do encourage your students to participate.

Ijeoma Otigbuo,

Coordinator COE at MC.
