PACE is Back - Fall 2021

Hi Chairs,

We managed to figure out a way to test students for the ENGL101+011 PACE program and are currently placing students into PACE sections.

If you remember, PACE allows IERW002 students to take a PACE section of ENGL101+011 based on their reading skills.

  • We collect a writing sample through the remote placement process. Students who select IERW002, place into it, and submit a PACE-level writing sample are then allowed to take a reading test.
  • The remote placement advisors send students this info with a link to the test. If they score 80% or above, they can take one of our PACE sections.

This doesn't mean that they are truly credit-level students; it means that they wrote enough and passed a reading test that allows them to take a special section of ENGL101+011 that is smaller than usual and has an in-class coach an hour a week who works with them.

Below is the email I send students (from the PACE email) with specific instructions for registering for PACE sections and contacting me (pace@montgomerycollege.edu).

Could you please get the word out that PACE is back and to be on the lookout for my email? If a student shows them the email, please have people go over the email and show them the list of sections they can choose from. Please do not give overrides because they can register for non-PACE sections, and I'm tracking numbers etc.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. And thanks for your support.

Best,

Miriam

PACE Refresher

Hello Everyone,
As the new PACE coordinator, I thought this would be a good time to let you know about the change in coordinator and refresh people’s memories of what PACE is. I hope this information is helpful to pass along to students who are eligible to take the PACE placement (it seems that sometimes they don’t know what PACE is or why they are writing an essay).
PACE was specifically designed for students who’s Accuplacer Reading score is reading exempt and places them into credit level, but their English score does not. Based on the writing sample, we can place them into a PACE section of ENGL 101A. These are specific sections that are paired with a regular ENGL 101A section. The difference between the PACE classes and regular classes is the class cap is a bit lower, and we have a writing tutor in the class for an hour a week.
Students are generally informed by counselors and sometimes Assessment Center staff that they are eligible to take the placement. When making a PACE referral, be sure to inform students that we are looking for an academic essay that reflects clear thinking and ideas and strong grammar and mechanics.
Students who’s PACE writing sample does not meet 101A standards take IERW 002.
To protect the integrity of the program, please only refer students to take the PACE placement if they have the appropriate Accuplacer scores.
NEW Accuplacer scores:                                            OLD Accuplacer Scores
                        Reading 263+                                                              Reading 79-120
                        English 200-262                                                          English 90+

If you are in Counseling and Advising or use Starfish, please note in the comments that you have made the referral. If for some reason a student has as anything other than a Starfish referral, please note what form the referral is (a typed or handwritten note, an email) and who provided the student with the referral.
If you have any questions about PACE and the placement process, please feel free to contact me.
Thanks so much
Miriam Simon

PACE Updates and Closing Date

Hello, everyone!

The PACE essays are still coming in fast and furious, and I'm doing my best to keep up this week. Please remember that while I will do my best to respond within a day of receiving the essays this week, students who take the placement test on Friday, or Saturday this week are not guaranteed a response by Monday. Our system is working great, but testing that late means we may not process it on time! We do have some late-start classes at the Rockville and TP/SS campuses for students.

I would like to close the PACE testing on Wednesday, September 5 to accommodate our late-start sections. This is always tricky because some students may not be able to find a late-start section that works with their schedules, but it's the best we can do. PACE results are valid for up to two years, so if they don't make it into a class this term, they can still register next semester.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks so much for all your help and support!

Best,
Rebecca

PACE Cut-Off Scores

Hello, everyone!

I hope your new semesters are off to good starts! We are seeing a bit of an uptick in incorrect PACE referrals, so I just wanted to ask if you could remind everyone about the cut-off scores.

PACE students must have a 79 or higher in Reading; they can have any score in English. We're seeing quite a few referrals come in for students who do not have a 79 or higher, and this is causing quite a bit of stress and confusion for student that try to register. I think some people have the best of intentions of helping students, but we have to hold very firm on the 79, so students are just turned away by me when an incorrect referral is made.

Another thing to remember is that PACE students are all new to English; any student who has taken previous developmental English courses is not PACE eligible.

Anything you can do to help spread the word to your departments would be so appreciated!

Thank you for your help,

Rebecca

Fall 2017 - PACE Ends Sept. 7

Just a few notes as we come to the close of "PACE season":

  1. Please continue to make sure everyone is aware that the Reading cutoff score for PACE is 79 (they must have 79 or higher). Thanks for reminding everyone of this!
  2. Please also note that we do not allow students to retake the PACE writing sample. We're seeing some students referred to retake, and we have to tell them that their original placement is final. If you can help us cut down on disappointments, it would be great. Students can only take the sample once; there is no reconsideration of placement.
  3. Our PACE testing will end on Thursday, September 7. Students who test this late will only be placed in one of our late-start sections.

Check on Placement (COP) and PACE Writing Samples

The English Department has requested that the Assessment Centers continue COP and PACE testing until Wednesday, February 1. After that, we will pause and resume testing at a later time for the Fall 2017 semester.

Please share this information with your counselors.

Thank you,

Guillermo

Fall 2016 - PACE Writing Sample Cut Off Date

This year, we'd like to make Wednesday, September 7 the cut-off date for taking the PACE writing sample. We do have a few late-start courses open, which is why we'd like to keep it going until that time. Please help us spread the word to colleagues and students.  I will email later in the semester about a "start-up" date for Spring testing.

PACE Summer 2016 Update

Hello everyone,

We've had a very successful summer for PACE enrollments! We're seeing a high volume of essays, but our system seems to be working very well. Thank you all so much for the part you play in keeping this program running!

As we close in on the busy, busy season for PACE, I just wanted to remind everyone of two things:

1. Students need to go to the English and Reading Department (on any campus) to receive their overrides into PACE. We tell them this in the email, but if they're ever confused, please just send them on over!

2. The turn around for evaluating PACE essays is seven days. We also tell students this when they take the writing sample. I know this becomes an issue as we near the start of the semester with students wanting to know their placement immediately. Unfortunately, we just can't accommodate this. We do have several late-start PACE sections that may be options for students testing later. If students do ask about their results, please remind them of the waiting period.

Thank you so much for keeping this in mind and sharing with your colleagues. Do let me know as any questions or issues arise! I'm happy to help.

Best,
Rebecca

PACE Update - Summer 2016

For PACE eligible students, the current procedure at the Assessment Centers is to ask qualifying students if they would like to complete the test after finishing their Accuplacer exam. Students may choose to do the test right away, come back another day to complete the test, or wait until they talk to a counselor.

The English department scores the PACE writing samples and enters a comment in Banner if they pass. If you see a student with a PACE eligible note in Banner but no override for an ENGL101A PACE section, you can enter the prerequisite override but only for PACE sections. So you must enter the specific CRN for the ENGL101A PACE section when providing the override.

Once a student registers for ENGL101A, the system will recognize that they are eligible to register for other courses at the ENGL101A/READ120 assessment level (so you do not have to enter a ton of PRE overrides for their other courses, as long as they register for ENGL101A).

PACE Registration Procedures

The PACE program is growing steadily.  As we move toward a larger program that can serve more of our students, we have made some procedural changes.  The PACE program itself has not changed, but with the creation of a college-wide PACE Committee and Coordinator, we have worked closely with Counseling and Advising and the Assessment Center to make the registration process smoother.

Here is a brief outline of the procedures for potential PACE student
  1. Students take the Accuplacer in Assessment Center
  2. Assessment Center informs qualifying students (RD >79; SS<89 for="" immediately="" is="" may="" nbsp="" not="" pace="" required="" sample="" sit="" sitting="" span="" the="" they="" writing="">
  3. PACE writing samples are scanned to pace@montgomerycollege.edu
  4. Committee reviews essays for placement
  5. Students receive e-mail to notify them of placement (ENGL 001, 002, or PACE 101A)
  6. PACE-qualifying students are instructed to come to Germantown, Takoma Park/Silver Spring, or Rockville office to begin the registration process
  7. Office staff  verifies placement when student shows qualifying email; they then put comments into Banner to indicate the student is “PACE eligible”
  8. Office staff provides ADD/DROP forms and a list of PACE sections for students
  9. Once students decide on the class section, office staff or chair signs the ADD/DROP form
  10. ACE stamp will be marked on the form to further secure accuracy
  11. Students will be advised to go to Registrar’s office to complete registration

PACE Procedures

Update provided by Michel Léger on 6/6/14

Just some reminders about the PACE (Program for Advancement to College English) procedures.

We all know that students who are RD-exempt and score between 80 and 89 on the ENGLISH portion of the Accuplacer should be referred for the PACE WRITING exam: they write a 1-2 paragraph essay which is evaluated by English, and they THEN receive an email directly from English telling them they either HAVE or HAVE NOT earned the right to register for one of the PACE seats in one of the PACE-aligned classes. The English Department will provide them with both PRE and DPT overrides for all three sections of PACE seats, and the student then makes a choice among THESE. THIS NOW ALSO APPLIES TO RD-exempt, EN001-placed students

So here’s where it gets tricky (because some students who want to register for EN101A but who are NOT part of this cohort will be blocked with a “Department Permission needed” error if they try to register for an ACE seat):

PACE-designated EN101A classes are comprised of TWO blocks of seats:
TEN seats are available to ANY EN101A student. THOSE ten seats have a DIFFERENT CRN and a CAP of TEN for THAT CRN
(so REGULAR EN101A students who “NEED” THAT time slot might be able to get it, just NOT in an PACE seat)
EIGHT seats are for PACE students ONLY, and have their OWN CRN and a cap of EIGHT for that CRN

Here’s the line up of the 3 ACE classes on THIS campus (this was for F13)
EN101A # 24629 MWF 11:10-12:35, Stephanie Sabourin  [NON-ACE seats CRN#24639]
EN101A #24619 MW (F?) 11:10-12:35, Matthew Decker [NON-ACE seats CRN#22832]
EN101A #24859 T R 2:40-4:45 Joseph Couch [NON-ACE seats CRN#24858]

If a student is coming with confusion about why they cannot register for a section of EN101A, THIS may be the issue: they are trying to register for an PACE seat. You can check their Registration Audit screen (SFASTCA) to confirm this. If they need the time that an PACE class is meeting, there may still be seats open in the block of TEN non-ACE seats. You can check the Course Schedule screen, ZSICRSE, to track open seats

RD095 to RD120

(Information provided by Michel Leger on 7/16/13)

Occasionally the following scenario comes up, and because it’s ONLY occasionally, we have to review it. A student places into RD095, and completes the course with an A. The student ALSO qualifies for EN101 or EN101A, either through placement or through completion of EN001 or EN002 with an A or a B. There is a mechanism for him to bypass RD099 and take RD120 WITH EN101A.

Here's the way it's always worked (on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus, anyway):

IF a student gets an A in RD095, AND that student gets an invitation from his RD095 Prof to take the "advancement exam" (which is the final for RD099), AND the student gets an 80% or higher on THAT exam, THEN the student is given the option of taking RD120 ALONG WITH EN101A (even if s/he placed into EN101); OR, of course, the student has the right to take RD099 anyway BEFORE taking EN101 or 101A (depending on THAT placement).

So the student ends up still taking a second RD course in any case.

Students who are allowed to go from RD095 to RD120 should NOT be given overrides into EN101, but WILL require overrides into BOTH RD120 and EN101A (since 101, with or without the A, requires RD120 as the assessment level and the override for RD120 will not change the assessment levels in SOATEST.

The advancement to RD120 and the override for the student (who according to SOATEST should be taking RD099) to take RD120 is CONTINGENT on the student CO-registering for EN101A—in other words, as far as I know students are NOT given the option of taking RD120 WITH EN101 or taking it BEFORE they take EN101. The option to take RD120 rather than RD099 is a package deal: RD120 WITH EN101A (NOT EN101).
Accelerated Courses in English:
In a regular semester, the English Department typically runs an accelerated sequence of “developmental” courses (including EN101A as a “developmental” course). The purpose of this, like the RD095-RD120 acceleration and like the PACE writing exam to advance from EN001/002 to EN101A) is to keep students moving so that they don’t become discouraged and drop out.
So here’s how it works.
In the FIRST half of the semester, the Department runs RD099 and EN002 concurrently. Students must pass RD099 with a C and EN002 with a B in order to qualify for EN101A.
In the SECOND half of the semester, the Department runs EN101A, and frequently runs EN002 for those students who have NOT completed it in the first half of the semester with a B or better.
ALL of these courses are enrollment restricted. Students must be screened EITHER by Lynn Roessner-Ankney or by Michel Leger for admission. We track registration to ensure we’re not overpopulating the classes. See notes below for the screening method.
Students who are deemed “good candidates” for the classes, based on the interview, are provided with DPT overrides for the RD099 and/or the EN002, and for the EN101A; they must also receive PRE overrides for the EN101A. The overrides are tied to SPECIFIC CRNs. These are provided before the semester begins in a flier from the Department (they can also be located by looking up the semester and courses, and looking for the start-end dates that represent half the semester.
PLEASE DO NOT EVER provide CRN-specific DPT overrides for the second-half, accelerated EN101A course, for students who are NOT registering for an accelerated RD099 and/orEN002 for the first half. The number of seats is limited, and every attempt is made to ENSURE that all those students who succeed in the first half have seats to go into in the second half. Students will be dropped from EN101A if they either do NOT succeed or were not enrolled in one of the first-half accelerated courses.
SCREENING: (I have not been authorized to authorize anyone else to do this, so it’s probably best if you just refer these students to me; or at the least, let me know you’ve done the screeing and provided the overrides so I can keep track of numbers—ML)
Students must have ONLY EITHER OR BOTH of RD099 and EN002 between them and the EN101/A assessment level.
Students must acknowledge and understand that the acceleration of the course, and the success formula, will require that they be in RD099 for SIX hours a week, EN002 and En101A for TEN hours a week, and will have to find TWELVE hours a week to study for RD099 and TWENTY hours a week to study for EN002 and EN101A. Students must adjust their schedules based on this, and not expect to succeed if they add more than an easy class to this schedule, preferably nothing more than a ONE credit class like DS or MATH098.
Students should ALSO NOT be working more than a few hours a week, and should NOT have major responsibility for a family, if they wish to succeed with this challenging sequence.

IF students meet all these standards, they are good candidates for the accelerated sequence.

English Department's PACE (formerly ACE) - Summer and Fall 2014

The Program for Advancement of College English or PACE (formerly Advancement to College English - ACE) is for NEW students who test into developmental English but tested out of reading courses. Students with an Accuplacer Reading score of 79+ and an English score below 90 should be referred to the assessment center to either retest on the English portion of the test or to complete the PACE writing sample.

Registration:
PACE writing samples are scored in the ENGL department. Students are emailed the results, and comments are placed in Banner comment section.  Students need to contact the English department (Samantha.veneruso@montgomerycollege.edu, Sue.whalen@montgomerycollege.edu, or zainab.ali@montgomerycollege.edu) for appropriate overrides.  Students may only register for designated PACE section (listed below) and registration requires both DPT and PRE overrides. Students may register for additional college level courses. We suggest PACE students consider DS 107/STSU 100 or DS 102/STSU 110 in addition to EN 101A/ENGL 101A PACE courses.

You can find more information, including the available summer and fall sections here:  I:\SHARED\CB215 Doc Masters\Counseling & Advising Resources\ENGL_PACE
