Transfer for ENGL 103 to UM

 Info. from Anne:

The transfer info from Leslie Lindeman looks correct, UM accepts either ENGL 102 and 103 as fulfilling the FSAW Freshman “Academic Writing” requirement, and actually, neither ENGL 102 or ENGL 103 are considered direct equivalents of their ENGL 101, they just accept one of those courses and mark off the FSAW Academic Writing requirement as fulfilled, and over the years, students have successfully been able to take the second junior-level “PW” Professional Writing requirement with just the “FSAW completed” on their transcripts as the prerequisite.

When a student transfers MC ENGL 102 to UM, it shows up with no direct equivalent on the UM Transcript, just the FSAW note.  I am attaching a sample student’s Testudo Transcript so you can see what it looks like, and this is also how ENGL 103 would be noted.

Info from Justin:

I received the following information from Leslie Lindeman, UMD’s Pre-Transfer Advisor for MC. This should clarify the issue, but please let me know if you have other questions/concerns about the transfer of ENGL103. I’m going to dig deeper into if it satisfies prerequisites for upper-level non English or Writing courses.

I’ll work on getting her suggested changes updated on our website.

Info. from Leslie Lindeman

Hi Justin,

Thank you for your message!  I just confirmed with UMD's Assistant Director of English, Karen Lewis, that both ENGL102 and ENGL103 from MC are accepted at UMD to satisfy the Fundamental Studies - Academic Writing (FSAW) general education requirement.  These transfer credit evaluations are valid through summer session II of 2026.  Students may take either course to satisfy the requirement.  Students who took ENGL103 at MC would be permitted to go onto upper-level English and writing courses at UMD without issue.

So, it looks like an update needs to be made to the UMD section of this webpage: https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/transfer/agreements-and-information/by-institution.html#list.  Here are my recommendations regarding ENGL and some other thoughts.

For RADT minimum courses to apply, students must earn a C or better.

It will show up on the new HS application which is not yet posted. Does NOT apply to priority courses.

Also RADT will begin summer classes June 6.

DMS will start right after memorial day.

This is because the RADT classes are 10 weeks in the summer and DMS is 8 weeks.

REMINDER - Extended Winter 21/22 Max Hours

 Good evening,

Please see the email below.  Since Winter Session registration is open and Advising Day is coming up, I wanted to remind you all of this change that is still in place.  Students can take up to 6 hours in Extended Winter without permission.

Be well,

Marcus

Subject: Extended Winter Max Hours Updated in Banner

Good morning Counseling Discipline, Raptor Central, and Records and Registration,

As many of you already know, Academic Regulation 4.4 – Academic Coursework Load was recently updated through the Academic Regulations and Standards Committee and approved by Dr. Pollard.  In particular, while there are no credit courses offered during the three-week, winter session (remote operations), the hours in the five-week extended winter were increased to 6 hours; see below.

Now, students who are not already enrolled can register for up to 6 hours in the extended winter session.  SIS is working with IT to have the hours for those already registered in extended winter updated to 6 hours so they can add an additional course if necessary.  I’ll follow up on that once I know more on that group of students.

Regards,

Marcus

Curriculum and Advising Worksheet - Fall 2021 Updates

 Counseling Discipline,

I wanted to thank everyone for their patience and understanding as I attempt to complete the updates to the Advising Worksheets.

This has been a particularly difficult summer and Fall revision cycle as we prepare for the Fall 2022 launch of Degree Works which will eventually lead to the sunsetting of CAPP and the Advising Worksheets.

Key Points:

  • Advising Worksheets for any Associates degree that changed for the 2021-2022 catalog year have been updated (date, July 2021).
  • All Certificate Advising Worksheets have been updated (date, July 2021).
  • All Associates degree Advising Worksheets that have not changed from last catalog year to 2021-2022 are still good to use while I continue to update the catalog year at the top.
  • The 2015-2016 catalog is currently the earliest active catalog year.  Any student that wants to graduate with an earlier catalog year must complete an appeal.
  • The 2019-2020 Advising Worksheets (in archived area at the bottom of the index page) are the last to feature the two and four letter course designations.

New Programs:

Terminology:

Statewide Program: The Maryland Higher Education Commission designates some community college programs as statewide programs. Students may enroll in any of these programs at the same rates as in-county residents if a particular program is not offered by the local community college or if the student cannot enroll due to an enrollment limit. These programs are subject to change; apply at the admissions office of each school.

Suspension:  A program that is suspended must remain in the college catalog to ensure that students that are enrolled in the program can receive federal financial aid and graduate from the program.  Programs can only have suspended status for a total of three years.  New students may not enroll in suspended programs.  Many suspended programs are in the process of being replaced by programs that are awaiting Board of Trustees and MHEC approval.

Deleted: A program that is deleted is no longer available to earn a degree/certificate in, even if the student enrolled in the program in the past seven years.  The program has been completely removed from the college curriculum and a student registered for deleted programs must select a new program major.

I appreciate everyone’s help in maintaining the accuracy of the Advising Worksheets and thank you in advance for emailing me any issues.

Sincerely,

Anthony Solano, MA, LCPC
