Degree Applicable / Not Applicable - '0' Courses

Can you look over the following course list and let me know if at any point in time any of these courses (and any other ‘0” level oddballs I may have left off the list) were considered degree applicable? It’s really difficult to determine with full confidence based on the language used in the catalog.

Judging by the attributes, there was and still is a lot of variation.  See comments in your email below.  To find more, I would have to look though each subj code individually or ask for a report.

PHYS 099 was GNRL

SP 098 was DEVP

Then, of course, EN/ENGL, RD/READ, and MA/MATH had a number of DEVP courses

Should they have been applicable to a degree even if there were GNRL?  Another question.

Not Applicable to a Degree or Certificate

AUTO099 – has been GNRL since 201520

AT099 - was GNRL starting 199540

CHEM099 – has been DEVP since 201520

CH099 – always was DEVP

FREN099 – has been GNRL since 201520

FR099 - always was GNRL

ITAL099 – was GNRL until 201930, no attribute after that

IT099 - always was GNRL

JAPN099 – was GNRL until 201930, DEVP after that

JP099 – JN099 was GNRL

SPAN099 – was GNRL until 201930, when it became DEVP

SN099 - always was GNRL

UMD Immersive Media - Track 2 - Math Requirement & Transfer Advising Notes

MATH150 Elementary Applied Calculus or MATH165 Precalculus would satisfy the Math requirement for the BA in Immersive Media Design (Emerging Creatives track).  Other MC courses that would help students to make progress in this major track include:

  • ARTT102 Intro to 2-D Design
  • ARTT100 Intro to Drawing
  • ARTT103 or 221 Intro to 3-D Design or Sculpture I
  • ARTT204 or 205 Intermediate Drawing or Figure Drawing I
  • ARTT116/GDES116 Digital Tools for the Visual Arts
  • FILM110 or ENGL235 Intro to Film or Film and Literature
  • language course(s) for Global Engagement requirement

I'm still working with the Immersive Media Design program to see if they will accept MC's CMSC140, TECH276, CMSC201, or something else as a substitute for the (UMD course) CMSC122 Introduction to Computer Programming via the Web degree requirement.  I'll keep you posted!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Health Science Admissions - Points System

  • Question: What was cutoff score for students in the fall 2020 admit group?

    Marjorie Davis Response:
The Fall 2020 cut off score for nursing was 21.

  • Question: How are the points added up to reach the max?

    Marjorie Davis Response:
The points for the number of attempts to pass minimum and priority courses are calculated individually for each course.

  • Question:   I promised I’d get an answer for a student regarding the following question.  She has completed BIOL150, 212, 213 and 210.  She also completed CHEM131.  Will CHEM131 be included in the science course GPA or is it only based on the science courses required for admission?

Marjorie Davis Response:  The science courses that are required for admissions into the program are the only courses used to calculate science GPA. For example, Nursing only includes BIOL212 and BIOL213 - GPA calculation does not include BIOL150 or 210.

  • Question: The nursing admissions requirements has a minimum GPA of 2.5 based on the last 24 credits - is that credits earned or credits taken? For example, if the student took BIOL 213 during the summer and failed it and then re-took the class in the spring semester, would both of those grades be calculated in the GPA of the last 24 credits?  What if the student earned a D the first time and then re-took the class?

Marjorie Davis Response: It’s credits earned. We do not use a course if it’s excluded from the student’s GPA. I cannot give you a typical cut off score because this depends on the applicant pool.

  • Question: I’m working with a student that is set to complete her GS-STEM degree this spring. Should see expect to be awarded 2 points in the prior educational experience since the degree has not been awarded, but she has been enrolled in 6-8 hours/semester consistently over the past 24 credits?

Marjorie Davis Response:  The degree needs to be awarded for students to get points for the prior degree. If her graduation application is still pending when the HS applications are being processed, then she will not get points for the prior degree.

  • Question: TEAS Points

One more point of clarification on TEAS:

Regardless of the actual score, points are awarded based on the preparedness level.  In other words, if one student receives an exemplary level with higher scores and another student earns lower scores, but still achieves the exemplary level – both students will be awarded the same 4 points.

These scores are classified by ATI as “Exemplary.”

·          TEAS Composite score: 90.7% – 100%

·          Reading: 90.7% – 100%

·          Math: 90.7% – 100%

·          Science: 90.7% – 100%

·          English: 90.7% – 100%

These scores are usually above the national mean and are classified by ATI as “Advanced.”

·          TEAS Composite score: 78% – 90%

·          Reading: 78% – 90%

·          Math: 78% – 90%

·          Science: 78% – 90%

·          English: 78% – 90%

These scores will usually put you right around the national average and are classified by ATI as “Proficient.”

·          TEAS Composite score: 58.7% – 77.3%

·          Reading: 58.7% – 77.3%

·          Math: 58.7% – 77.3%

·          Science: 58.7% – 77.3%

·          English: 58.7% – 77.3%

Transfer Advising Notes for Students Transferring to UM (Main Campus and Shady Grove)

Transfer Advising Notes for Students Transferring to UM (Main Campus and Shady Grove)

 1.    Attached is an Updated MG Guide to Applying for Transfer to UM – ready for you to send to students asking for help with transfer applications.  Includes new information on the English Language Proficiency requirement for students whose native language is not English; a reminder that UM does not accept WES or AACRAO International Credit Evaluations, and an answer to the burning question “Must I write out all courses that I’ve taken at MC on the transfer application?”

2. UM will accept only ONE COMM course from these three:

a.    COMM 108 Fund. of Human Communication

b.    or COMM 112 Business & Professional Communication

c.     or COMM 121 Public Speaking

All three are equivalent to UMD’s COMM 107 only, credit is given for only one course!  Sometimes students pick both COMM 108 and COMM 112 to fill both a GEIR and a Humanities or take COMM 112 after 108 thinking it is a good business elective… but for UM, this is a NO.  The Gen Ed Program list now says “COMM 108 or 112” under HUMD but this is not always clear to students.  This goes for Comm Studies AA students also, only one from COMM 108, 112 or 121 will be accepted by UM.

  1. 3.   MC and UM have very different AP Advanced Placement Score requirements.  If you meet with ANY students with AP credits, please point out this fact to the student by sending the link to the MC AP Credit Comparison Chart:  https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/counseling-and-advising/transfer-resources/apcreditcomparisonchart02192020.pdf   MC grants more credits to students with scores of 3 and this can make a difference when it’s time to transfer.  The MC AP Credit Comparison Chart also spells out the policy when MC gives Gen Ed Credit for an AP score that is not accepted by UM –

  2. 4.  UM’s Global Engagement Requirement can now be completely fulfilled by two courses total, MC’s ASLP 100 & 110 ASL I & II [American Sign Language]; this is new!  No need to take a 200-level course if the student completes ASLP 100 & 110.  This was mentioned in the longer message about UM’s Global Engagement Requirement but it is worth repeating here also.

  3. 5.    UM Smith School of Business @ Shady Grove is typically more willing to look at students as individuals for admission.  When in doubt, suggest that students with GPA’s 3.0 or higher and Gateway repeat issues discuss their situations with a Smith School Shady Grove adviser.  UM Smith School at Shady Grove still has openings for Fall 2021.

  4. 6.    See the New UM Transfer Advising Page that describes MTAP with a semester-by-semester view, provides links to UM Four-Year Plans, includes Pre-Preprofessional Pages (Pre-Med, Pre-Physical Therapy, etc. and information about Pre-Transfer Advising:  https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/academics/transfer/mc-transfer-advising-um.pdf

  5. 7.    Finishing an AA or AS degree prior to transfer - the advantage of completing a degree is that UM will require fewer of their Gen Ed courses in the junior and senior years if a student finishes MC’s General Education Program.  If you meet with a student who cannot finish a full degree prior to transfer, or is trying to “Reverse Transfer” after starting @ UM, a second option is check to see if all MC Gen Ed Requirements have been finished for an AA or AS degree; if yes, then the student can ask MC Admissions for a General Education Program Evaluation note stamped on the MC transcript to show UM that the MC Gen Ed Program is finished.  The Gen Ed Evaluation Form can only be processed if all Gen Ed courses have been finished, not in progress.  An advantage of the Gen Ed Note is that it can be processed much faster than an Application for Graduation; if the student qualifies for both the Gen Ed Completion Note and Graduation, encourage them to apply for both.  Find the Gen Ed Evaluation Request form under Admissions – Student Forms: https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/admissions-registration/student-resources/student-forms.html

8.    A few interesting facts about UM:

·  How much does it cost these days?  https://financialaid.umd.edu/resources-policies/cost-attendance

·  New majors at Shady Grove:

o   B.S. in Biocomputational Engineering

o   B.S. in Embedded Systems and Internet of Things

· New majors at the Main Campus:

·   Neuroscience https://neur.umd.edu/academics/transferring-umd

·    Immersive Media Design – two tracks – 1) Computing and 2) Art https://imd.umd.edu/curriculum/

·   Public Policy https://spp.umd.edu/your-education/undergraduate/public-policy-major

·         Fear the Turtle – this campaign started in 2002.  It has slightly morphed into “Fearless Ideas”, but the Fear the Turtle logo remains a part of UM’s brand to this day.

Don’t Fear the Transfer Process!
