Transfer Advising Tools

Another friendly reminder to follow the Transfer Blog as well as refer students to the Transfer and Articulation websites.

Scholarship Opportunities

Remember to refer students to the Transfer Scholarship Blog for information on scholarships! They can learn about scholarships like UMBC's- MARCU* which requires 60 credits, a 3.2 GPA, interest in the advancement of underrepresented minorities in sciences, and a plan to get  PhD in science or math areas.

Also all current MC students should apply for the MC Foundation Scholarship which can be found on the financial aid website in the Grants and Scholarships section.

Montgomery College has a partnership with Washington Adventist, Washington Hospital Center, and Holy Cross hospital. Students who are admitted into the hospital programs are permitted take general education courses at MC and then once the student is done with the hospital training they can receive transfer credit for 42 hours of RT courses as well as 2 credits for medical terminology and receive their AAS from MC. This opportunity is limited to students who were admitted into the hospital program and is monitored by Rose Aehle. Any students who come in asking about this program should be directed to Rose Aehle (rose.aehle@montgomerycollege.edu) - RT Program Coordinator.

ARTSYS and UM General Education Courses

UMCP and ARTSYS What to Follow for General Education

Many of you have noticed that the 2012 ARTSYS Recommended Transfer Program pages (RTP’s) which refer to UMCP’s New General Education Program (the blue clickable “AREA” lines) are blank. This is NOT a point of concern if Montgomery College students complete the MC General Education Program prior to transfer.

We have requested that a statement about taking MC Gen Ed courses be placed in the RTP Advising Notes, but it hasn’t happened yet.

Most four-year college/university Gen Ed Programs are around 40 credits total (including UMCP’s). Students who have completed Montgomery College’s 34-credit General Education Requirements will have met 34 credits of the 40 credits of Gen Ed at UMCP without a course-by-course match.

The bottom line: Students who finish 34-credit Gen Ed Program at Montgomery College do not have to fulfill the blue AREA requirements on ARTSYS RTP’s 2012 and after.

HOWEVER students who started @ MC prior to Fall 2012 still need to follow CORE requirements.

The CORE list can be found on the MC Transfer Website under the Local Schools link and then under the University of Maryland.

http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/uploadedFiles/EDU/Counseling_and_Advising/Transfer/Transfer_Resources/corecp(1).pdf

Here’s another interpretation of “Who Follows CORE” and “Who Follows New Gen Ed” at UMCP:

• NEW GEN ED - Any new student who started @ MC this year, Fall 2012 and after, should follow a 2012 ARTSYS RTP and take Montgomery College General Education Program courses in place of the blue AREA lines.

• Students who transfer to MC who did not attend at Maryland system school prior to fall 2012 will also follow the NEW GEN ED at UM unless they complete an AA at MC.

• Old CORE - Students who started at MC before this Fall 2012 and who graduated from high school PRIOR to May/June 2012 must follow the older RTP pages showing CORE General Education. Students following CORE should choose at least one History and/or English Literature from among Humanities choices on the MC Gen Ed list. Note that both a History AND a Literature are not required – just one HS or EN Lit.

EXCEPTION: ALL transfer students who come from a non-Maryland public school to Montgomery College in hopes of then transferring to UMCP will have to follow New Gen Ed, unless they complete an AA degree while @ MC before transferring. If they do not complete the AA they will need to follow specific New Gen Ed requirements, using courses from their previous school if applicable. See specific courses that fulfill New Gen Ed requirements for any school in the Transfer Credit Center site, www.tce.umd.edu – and refer these students to UMCP’s Pre-Transfer Advising for more information! http://www.transferadvising.umd.edu/

Who Follows CORE

Students enrolled @ MC or ANY Univ. System of Maryland (USM) school prior to Fall 2012 will follow Older RTP’s and CORE Requirements

1) EN 102 or 109

2) Mathematics

3) Health – a 3 credit health is preferred

4) Speech – SP 108 or 112

5) One Arts – ANY

6) One Arts or Humanities - ANY

7) One Humanities – Choose one History OR one Literature

8) Two Behavioral & Social Sciences -

9) Two Sciences

Who Follows New General Education?

All students new to MC Fall 2012 (key distinction – graduated from HS in Summer 2012) AND any transfer students who did not attend a Maryland system school prior to Fall 2012 will follow New Gen Ed (example, a transfer from Penn State to MC hoping to go to UM must follow New Gen Ed).

1) EN 102 or 109

2) Mathematics

3) Health – a 3 credit health is preferred

4) Speech – SP 108 or 112

5) One Arts – ANY

6) One Arts or Humanities – ANY

7) One Humanities – ANY

8) Two Behavioral & Social Sciences

9) Two Sciences

General Education Program and Advising Notes

Many of you have noticed that the 2012 ARTSYS Recommended Transfer Program pages (RTP’s) which refer to UMCP’s New General Education Program have blue clickable “AREA” lines that are blank. This is NOT a point of concern if Montgomery College students complete the MC General Education Program prior to transfer.

HOWEVER students who started @ MC prior to Fall 2012 still need to follow CORE requirements. For example, if you’re working with a student who started at MC in 2011 and who wants to major in Psychology, then the 2009 RTP is the correct version to use. Confusing – of course!

Here’s another interpretation of “Who Follows CORE” and “Who Follows New Gen Ed” at UMCP:

• NEW GEN ED - Any new student who started @ MC this year, Fall 2012 and after, should follow a 2012 ARTSYS RTP and take Montgomery College General Education Program courses in place of the blue AREA lines. http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/uploadedFiles/EDU/Counseling_and_Advising/Transfer/Transfer_Resources/GenEdAdvising9-20-12.doc These are students who graduated from high school in May/June 2012.
Suggestion: Staple a copy of the MC Gen Ed Course List to the ARTSYS RTP when advising students!

• MC Gen Ed Page with Transfer Advising Notes:
http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/uploadedFiles/EDU/Counseling_and_Advising/Transfer/Transfer_Resources/GenEdAdvising9-20-12.doc

Hope this information clarifies what is really supposed to be a simple matter: most future Terps should fulfill the full MC General Education Program prior to transfer (the only detail is to remember to recommend a 3-credit rather than a 1-credit HE).

AELP

According to Dr. Pearl's memo on 11/8/12 AELP courses will continue to be 3 credit 5 billing hour for the Spring 2013 semester. The grades earned in the classes will continue to count toward a student's gpa. Changes to the AELP courses will begin in the fall 2013 semester.

Friday, November 2, 2012

AELP Grading Changes (effective fall 2013)

In my September 12, 2012, memo concerning the role of grades in American English Language Program (AELP) courses in the calculation of students’ grade point averages, I indicated a spring 2013 implementation target. Based on thoughtful feedback from the Faculty Council, I am shifting the implementation to the fall 2013 semester. This will allow more time to communicate the significance of this grade change to faculty and students.
As stated in my earlier memo, the learning outcomes for AELP courses have not changed. The courses are immensely valuable to students who are preparing to work toward a degree, certificate, or to transfer. While a change in the handling of course grades has an institutional impact on AELP students’ grade point averages, there is no change in the course or learning outcomes. AELP will continue to provide students with the highest quality language-learning journey.

_____________________________

All AELP courses will now be 5 credit hours effective spring 2013.
The following information is from Dr. Pearl’s e-mail dated Oct 5, 2012
Hi Debra,

“I am accepting the recommendation that I have received concerning the recording of grades for AELP classes into BANNER. The classes will receive traditional grades of A, B, C, D, F and etc. but for the purposes of recording into the BANNER system and reporting they should have a symbol attached to them. Thus the grades will be recorded at A1, B2, and etc. as an example”.

“The AELP grades will not be counted towards the calculation of the student’s GPA and the courses will not be counted as earned hours. The credit value of the classes will be determined by the billable hours for the student”.
• The grades for these courses (EL 101, EL 102, EL 103, EL 104, EL 110, EL 111, RD 101, RD 102, RD 103, SP 102) will be A1, B1, C1, D1, and F1. In regards to the number added to the letter grade ,it will not impact prerequisite or assessment level checking in Banner. In other words, Banner only recognizes the Numeric Value for each grade (for example A=40 and A1=40).

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

MA116A Advising note

Please remember to advise students that MA116A is an accelerated course that combines the content of MA097 and MA116. Students should be confident in their math skills if they are electing to take this course and counselors may want to let the student know that they will have to take and pass an algebra competency exam or they will not be able to continue with the statustics portion of the course. Here is an exerpt from one TP/SS MA116A professor's syllabus:

The algebra content of the course is delivered during the first 11 classes. A student who does not earn a grade of 70% or higher on this algebra competency examination CANNOT earn a passing grade for the course.

If a student fails the algebra competency examination on the first attempt, the student may retake the examination only one more time. If the student passes the examination on the second attempt, then the score for the algebra competency will be recorded as 70%, regardless of the student’s actual score on the second attempt.
If a student fails the algebra competency examination on the second attempt, then the student CANNOT earn credit for MA 116A. The student will be given the option to enroll in an online version of MA 097 (Intermediate Algebra). If the student successfully completes the online MA 097 course, then the student will be eligible to take MA 116 in a subsequent semester.

AP score reminder

Hi all,

Remember if students come in with unofficial AP scores you can see the list of MC course equivalencies here: http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/edu/department2.aspx?id=15634

However, remember that the way AP scores translate into courses at MC is not necessarily the same as the way that they will transfer University of Maryland you can see their list here: http://www.tce.umd.edu/apchart.html

Audit to Credit Reminder

Remember if a student accidentally registers for a course under audit they must change this prior to the 20% deadline in order to avoid having to complete an academic appeal.

To change from audit to credit students need to bring a paper registration form to their professor, check the correct box and sign under instructor permission. The student must then hand in to admissions.

I grade procedure

In the event that you submit an “I” at the end of the semester, you will need to complete the Incomplete Form and submit to Admissions and Records within 2 weeks after final grades are due.

The "I" grade contract can be found in the h drive under "fillable forms" "Student forms"

If you have questions contact the Registrar.

FAUV035 and 055 Reminder

FAUV 035 will overide EN/RD assessment level
*Proof of C or better in EN comp course of 100 or higher
FAUV 055 will override all assessment levels
*Proof of prior degree

Student can show Admissions an unofficial transcript from an accredited US college or university. The AEM staff member will sign, date, scan into the system and it and give it back to the student (in case they need a pre-req override for something else).

Students can also print out an unofficial transcript in front of a counselor or AEM staff person. The person who witnesses this will sign, date and then send to Admissions for appropriate FAUV code to be input.

In SOATEST, the FAUV line applies to ELAP students only in one case.  FAUV 025 means the student is exempt from ELAS classes – no ELAS970, 980, or 990 required. It’s not an exemption from ELAI990 though!

SAT scores and Admissions

In case you were not aware of this:

As long as the student prints out a copy of their SAT scores from the college board website in the presence of a counselor, the counselor can sign it and submit to the admissions office. This score will go into Banner same day.

This will save a lot of time putting in specific overrides for classes when students meet SAT cut offs of 550 or higher.

multiple degree regulation

New regulation to keep in mind when advising:

9.3011 Limiting Multiple Degrees
Any Montgomery College student who already has earned an associate’s degree at the College must earn at least fifteen additional credits beyond the first degree and meet all other graduation requirements in order to be eligible for another degree.

The 15 additional credits must apply to the second degree.  This means no more Business + International Business, nor two Engineering degrees….  And if a student wants to do General Studies and then later complete another, more focused degree, s/he will need 15 credits specific to that second degree.  (This regulation was required by MHEC).

The graduation coordinators are already screening for this.

Academic Suspension Reminders

Student on Academic Suspension that have sat out a whole semester can meet with a counselor and begin the semester on academic restriction status. Counselors should put a note in Banner and then have the student check in with admissions so that staus can be changed.

Students who do not want to sit out a semester must complete the academic suspension appeal form and see the Dean of Student Development.

New Academic Reg/General Studies

I want to update everyone on some Academic Regulations that were passed last year, and are already in the P&P.
9.823 Class Attendance
Faculty are required to report students who have never attended their courses by use of the “NA” (Never Attended) placeholder. The “NA” should be reported on Banner Web no later than three business days before the twenty percent benchmark for dropping courses. The “NA” should be reported in the space used for midterm grades. For summer and winter courses, the “NA” should be reported during the first two days of class.

9.411 Incomplete Notification Form

Incomplete grades are exceptional marks given to students who have attended the vast majority of a course and who are doing satisfactory work but, for circumstances beyond their control, are unable to complete a small portion of the course work. The instructor will provide students with incomplete forms stipulating work to be done by a certain date, usually by the fourth week of the following fall or spring semester. Every student should receive an incomplete form if an “I” grade is warranted.

The incomplete form is available at the final grade worksheet in My MC. Upon completion of this form, a copy will be sent to the faculty member, the student, and the Office of Admissions and Records for inclusion in the student’s record. Forms must be completed within two weeks of the grade submission deadline. Failure to fulfill the terms of the form will lead to conversion of the “I’ grade to a failure.

The instructors are afforded access to “I” grades they have assigned and both students and instructors are e‐mailed about the original arrangement and are warned as deadlines approach.

When the grade of “I” is recorded, the course work must be completed within the four weeks following the beginning of the next full semester, unless the instructor notifies the Office of Admissions and Records that an extension has been granted.

Incompletes may not be given as midterm grades. In addition, the reason for assigning an incomplete must be validated by using the incomplete form.

Advising Student Athletes

Earlier in the summer Tyra and Marcus figured it would be helpful to put together a “cheat sheet” for counselors and faculty advisors working with student-athletes, especially as our athletic programs transitioned on July 1st. It’s just meant to capture some basic things that might come up, so don’t expect to be an expert using this. I know in the past couple of weeks some folks have already had questions about what counts and what doesn’t, so hopefully you find this somewhat helpful.

MA094 Repeat

MA 094 is coded in Banner so that students will be allowed to take it up to four times.

Most courses are coded for 2 attempts before needing an override for the third try, but MA 094 allows students to take it up to four times before needing an override for attempt 5.\

Academic Suspension Form Updated

Students who have been academically suspended, have not sat out a full fall or spring semester, and want to appeal their suspension must complete this form:  http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&ItemID=40803.

Of note to counselors is Step II - "The counselor will discuss your situation and relay relevant information to the Dean of Student Development."  Please make sure you relay relevant information by putting your recommendations, suggestions, comments, etc. in General Comments within Banner and/or email them directly to the dean.

"Double Academic Suspension" Students

We know that students who are Academically Suspended must sit out for a complete fall or spring semester (unless they submit an appeal and are approved).  Upon their return those students meet with a counselor and are placed on Academic Restriction until they get their overall GPA up above a 1.75.

In some cases a student can have a GPA so low that even if they do remarkably well during their Academic Restriction semester that their overall GPA still isn't above a 1.25.  Therefore, they would be placed back on Academic Suspension at the end of that semester.  In these cases of "Double Academic Suspension" counselors don't to have the student go through the Academic Suspension Appeal process and/or refer them to the dean.  Assuming the student had a significantly better semester counselors can have the student's status updated to Academic Restriction again, as normal, and allow them to take 6 credit hours.

Pls. Remind Students Transferring Fall 2012 to Send Spring Transcripts

Please help remind students that they must send a final Spring transcript if they are transferring this Fall 2012.  MC students will get this e-mail on 5/10:
If you have applied for Fall Admission to any school, sending a copy of your new Spring final grades at MC is a must.

Transferring to UM-College Park? If you are waiting to be admitted to a competitive, LEP major, you need to
  1. Send your final transcript for Spring 2012 AND
  2. Contact the LEP Office to say that you need to be reviewed with your Spring grades. Send a message to lep@umd.edu - “My final Spring transcript from Montgomery College has been sent and I am still hoping to be admitted to [name of major]” with your name and UID.
UM-College Park’s LEP/Competitive majors are: Architecture, Business, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences and Policy-Biodiversity and Conservation, Communication, Criminology and Criminal Justice, Engineering, Government and Politics, Journalism , Landscape Architecture, Psychology

HOW TO REQUEST YOUR M.C. TRANSCRIPT: Go into My MC and Click on “Request MC Transcript or Enrollment Verification” under Student Quick Links and follow the steps. Check “Hold for Final Grades” if all of your Spring grades do not yet appear on your record. Pay the $7.00 fee. Your transcript will be sent ELECTRONICALLY to all Maryland public schools or be mailed by US mail to other schools. This is the best way to send them, do NOT take a paper copy to UMCP as that delays processing transfer credits. If you are enrolled in Summer 2012 classes, send a copy of current grades NOW and another transcript at the end of the summer class.

General Education Updates

Please remember to refer to the transfer website when advising students on general education. Anne S. has created handouts for students following UMCP's new general education program as well as the old CORE requirements. Stay up to date by going to: www.montgomerycollege.edu/transfer

ACE updates

ACE has been added to the placement sheet and re-test authorization sheet. Remember students qualify for the ACE test when they are RD exempt and have an 80-89 on the EN section of the Accuplacer. The test will take 45 minutes and include a writing sample. If they pass then they will advance into EN101A. Students may opt out of the test and then should be advised to take EN002.

FastTrack -- Summer 2012

Attached is the FT flyer for this summer’s classes --

The attendance in January was well below average, probably because of MA 094.  However, Math 094 and FT can both exist.  FT is still a good alternative for some.  Students who can get through all of MA 094 in one semester could probably get through Adv FT in 2 weeks.  Also, some students who got close to finishing part I or part II could finish up using FT at a much cheaper cost than another semester of MA 094.  In any case, I hope that counseling will continue to use FT as a means to help students get through the developmental math sequence in a timely manner.

New General Education Program at UMCP

Don't let the New General Education Program at UMCP scare you!  It's actually simpler than CORE.  Just tell students to "Follow MC's General Education Program."  Encourage students to finish the entire Gen Ed Program at MC for the smoothest transfer.

Here are the slight changes of which you should be aware:
  1. English Foundation - still EN 102/109
  2. Math - if a student is heading toward an arts/humanities/communication/social sciences major, then MA 116 Elements of Statistics is the best choice.  It will count in two categories, fulfilling both the Math Requirement AND the Analytic Reasoning Reasoning (two categories).  If you see MA 116 in the string of choices on an ARTSYS page, highlight MA 116.
  3. Speech - SP 108 or 112, now required at UM
  4. Health - a 3-credit health is recommended - it will transfer to give the student a total of 34 rather than 32 gen ed credits.  With 34 credits done, the student needs an even 6 more credits/ 2 more classes to be taken after transfer to finish off Gen Ed.  If 32 credits are done (with a 1-cr. HE), then 8 more credits remain at UMCP = 3 classes.
  5. Arts / Arts and Humanities / Humanities - Any courses on the MC Gen Ed list will work.  Previously with CORE, a Literature was required and a History recommended, and CG 120 was not accepted as an Arts.  Now with New Gen Ed - ANY courses on our list for Arts/Humanities will work.
  6. Behavioral Social Sciences - same as before, take 2 from 2 different disciplines.
  7. Sciences - same as it ever was, 1 lab, a second without or with lab, depends on major.
  8. * Global and Cultural Perspectives (Multicultural) - still needed, one course from among all of our choices.
The handout on the MC Transfer Page is for new students:  www.montgomerycollege.edu/transfer
General Education Course Lists
For Students New to Montgomery College in Fall 2012
For Students New to College (HS Grad Date May/June '12) (includes Gen Ed List 12-13) - 4 pages
CORE - All students who were enrolled in college prior to Fall 2012
New Gen Ed - All students new to any college starting Fall 2012 and after (even Early Placement) - typically high school graduates in May/June 2012

More MTAP - Maryland Transfer Advantage Program

The new student who says, "I'm thinking of Georgetown, Boston University... oh and maybe UMCP," should enroll in MTAP now so the maybe can become definite later if desired.

All new students are encouraged to file an MTAP application form upon arrival.  This simple form needs a short paragraph stating why the student is interested in MTAP (Item 16)- then it's turned in to any MC Admissions Office.  Students cannot enroll in MTAP one semester prior to transfer, so this quick step now keeps the possibility of admission open later.  www.montgomerycollege.edu/MTAP
  1. There's no commitment - even students who want Limited Enrollment Programs (LEP's like Business, Engineering, Education, Psychology, etc.  www.lep.umd.edu ) should apply for MTAP to get in on early advising for those majors.  High school seniors know that Early Decision means a must acceptance, but MTAP is not an early decision program - there is no commitment to attend UM later.
  2. We are unfortunately seeing students now who have a 3.0 or higher applying to non-LEP majors being turned down by UMCP simply because they were not in MTAP.
  3. The MTAP benefit of attending one class at UM while enrolled at MC is optional, not required.  It's great for students who want to stay on track for majors when MC doesn't offer a lower-level course such as those below, but taking that class is not a must.  (This list is also on the MTAP page above).

Spring Admits to UMCP

High school seniors who have been admitted as freshmen to the University of Maryland, College Park entering Spring 2013 will be registering for classes at MC over the next several months.  "Spring Admits" are not transfer students in the regular sense.  A separate "Advising Spring Admits" page on the Transfer Page spells out information that may be useful to help students choose classes for one semester at MC.  Students who are Spring Admits get a letter suggesting that they take some classes at a community college in the Fall, but they are not required to do so and their grades are not evaluated to decide on Spring Admission (but they will transfer so these are important credits).

See the "Advising UMCP Spring Admits" page here:
http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/uploadedFiles/EDU/Counseling_and_Advising/Transfer/Transfer_Resources/UMGenEdforSpringAdmits4-18-12.doc

You may also find this link to UMCP "Four Year Plans" for all majors useful when talking to Spring Admits.  http://www.gened.umd.edu/for-students/forstudents-4yearplans.php
