Changes to Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering AS degrees (402 and 409)

The following is an update on recent changes to the Electrical Engineering AS degree (402) and Computer Engineering AS degree (409).  These have been introduced in order to stay up to date with changes that have been made to the corresponding degree requirements at the University of Maryland, College Park.  A new course, ENEE 290, has been added to the curriculum.  It will be offered for the first time in Fall, 2025 and it will become a prerequisite for ENEE 222 starting in Spring, 2026.

For Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering majors at MC, as well as General Engineering majors who plan to take ENEE 222:

1.                  Students who have passed MATH 282 by the end of Summer, 2025 should complete MC's EE and CE degrees under the old curriculum (2024-2025).

1.                  ENEE 290 will not be required, but ENEE 222 should be completed by the end of Fall, 2025.

1.                  If students fall into this category, they must contact the ENEE program advisors at the following email addresses (Palmyra.Catravas@montgomerycollege.edu and Lan.Xiang@montgomerycollege.edu) to discuss your schedule and request a prerequisite override if needed for ENEE 222 in Fall, 2025.

2.                  Students who have not passed MATH 282 yet should complete the new curriculum (starts with 2025-2026).

1.                  sign up for ENEE 290 in lieu of MATH 282

2.                  sign up for ENEE 222 only after completing ENEE 290.

The MC website has been updated with the new curriculum at the following links:

·                     Engineering Science AS Degree, Electrical Engineering Area of Concentration | Montgomery College, Maryland

·                     Engineering Science AS Degree, Computer Engineering Area of Concentration | Montgomery College, Maryland

Note that starting in Spring, 2026, the content of ENEE 222 will be different since ENEE 290 will be a prerequisite.  It is important that the ENEE program advisors connect with advisees and have a chance to double check schedules.  We are asking if Counseling and Advising could please send us the names/M#'s of students who come for advising in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or General Engineering taking any ENEE courses so that we can help with the curricular transition.  Please sent the list to Palmyra.Catravas@montgomerycollege.edu and Lan.Xiang @montgomerycollege.edu

It would be a pleasure for us (Lan and me) to collaborate with Counseling and Advising during this transition as we work through the ENEE program advising from our end.

Salisbury Information

The admissions director stated that there are two ways for students to apply to SU: 1) commonapp 2) collegenet and he stated that the collegenet takes less time to complete due to common adding additional questions based on what is filled.

Salisbury has many dual degrees in Engineering in partnership with University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Salisbury University has an additional grant to provide full-rides to students who major in STEM & Secondary Education.

There is an accelerated program in partnership with UMES for a doctorate in pharmacy. It is 3 years at SU and 3 years at UMES. They recommended our students take many courses in Math & Science. Lastly, there is a Good neighbor Scholarship up to 6k. It is for DC, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.

**In the past I have emailed admissions to have application fees waived and they are very generous.

Engineering Transfer Course Update

"ENEE 140 (2 cr) + ENES 206 (1 cr) can be equivalent to ENAE 202 (Aerospace Computing, a required 3-credit course for Aero Engineering students at UMCP)"

This is brand new engineering transfer guidance from UMCP, confirmed by Don Day.  Don is in the process of revising the UMCP transfer guides for engineering.  This development may drive some additional class offerings at MC in the near future, such as pairings of these two courses.  Meanwhile, Aero Engineering students now have an MC alternative to taking ENAE 202 at College Park via MTAP.

ENEE 140 was formerly only taken by electrical engineering students and a few general engineering students.  ENES 206 is a new 1-credit MATLAB course that was developed in response to UMCP's phasing out of their equivalent to ENES 240.  We have not offered it at Germantown, but that may change soon.

Engineering Course Equivalencies at UMBC

I wanted to share this exciting information. For students who wish to transfer into one of UMBC’s Engineering majors, the following will now apply:

MC’s ENES100 + ENES206 = UMBC’s ENES101
·         Minimum grade of B required for both courses for Mechanical Engineering majors.
·         Minimum grade of C required for both courses for Chemical Engineering majors.
·         Minimum grade of C required for both courses for Computer Engineering majors.

Engineering Transfer - Chemistry

Dear Counselors,

In the new online catalog, a few of the engineering programs show CHEM135 as the preferred CHEM course for their program. Please explore transfer institutions with your student before advising them to take CHEM135. This course is UMCP exclusive and not accepted at other Universities. If they are considering UMBC or other transfer institutions recommend the CHEM131/132 option.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

This is an example of the notes section for the Electrical Engineering Degree. I put the note in bold and bigger print.

·         The appropriate initial chemistry courses will be determined by the student’s score on the Chemistry Placement Exam, mathematics level, AP/IB credits, or transfer credits. Possible courses include CHEM 099, CHEM 131, CHEM 132, orCHEM 135. Either CHEM 132 or CHEM 135 satisfies the required chemistry credit for UMCP. CHEM 131-CHEM 132 satisfies the required chemistry credit for UMBC, but CHEM 135 does not.

Thank you,
Marcella

Engineering Course Updates - Fall 2013

Montgomery College already offers an equivalent course EE222 (2 sections, 18 seats each) each semester at the Rockville Campus.  Class size is small compared to 40+ seats per section at UMCP.

Also, Montgomery College will begin offering an equivalent to UMCP BIOE120 Biology for Engineers in fall 2013.  ES120 replaces MC’s course BI107 for Bioengineering and Civil Engineering (for those planning on environmental and water resources track) at UMCP.  ES120 also replaces ES102 for students planning on majoring in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at UMCP.

The most current information regarding engineering transfer curriculum for UMCP is available in PDF format on the Engineering Advising web site:  http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/EDU/Department2.aspx?id=11115#UMCP.

Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Engineering Advising Website

Please take advantage of the relatively new Engineering Advising Website at: http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/EDU/Department2.aspx?id=9930 I put icons for the website on all of the computers in room 215CB. The tabs on the left hand side direct students to the curricular pages for efficient transfer in addition to the MC catalog pages for engineering. The transfer pages are typically more accurate and up-to-date than the catalog pages. They also include commentary on courses that may or may not transfer neatly to UMCP or elsewhere. Mike Mehalick and I are updating all of these pages and we will be including 5-semester guides for students who come to MC without the necessary math and English pre-requisites. Also of particular interest to most engineering students is the lengthy section on transferring to UMCP, with discussions of the LEP programs, MTAP, TOEFL, and so on and so on. Don Day.
