New MC AP Comparison Chart

Transfer Advising Update for Students with AP Scores - July 2025

A new Transfer Advising “MC Transfer Advising AP Comparison Chart” has been uploaded on the Montgomery College Transfer Resources Page https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/transfer/transfer-resources.html

Open the section “General Transfer Resources” to see:  AP: Comparison Chart of AP (Advanced Placement) Credits, Montgomery College & Sample Local Schools

Graduating high school seniors have now received their test scores from AP Exams taken in May 2025.

Highlights of Changes in MC AP Transfer Advising :

  1. Montgomery College Now Accepts More AP Scores of 3
Starting with AP tests taken in May 2022 or later, MC awards more direct course credits for AP scores of 3, following Maryland’s "Transfer with Success" policy. This is a change from the past when MC required a minimum score of 4 or 5 on sixteen out of 41 AP Tests.
  2. UMD Still Requires a Score of 4 to give Course Credit for Most AP Tests
UMD also now accepts more AP scores of 3; however, many tests at UMD still require a score of 4 or 5 to count as direct course credit.  Example, UMD requires a score of 4 to give course credit for PSYC 100, ECON 201, MATH 165, and many other courses; a score of 3 may grant “lower level elective” or “Gen Ed” credit at UMD.
  3. Advising Must Consider Major Requirements
Students transferring to UMD or other selective schools need to know that a score of 3 might not fulfill major-specific course requirements. If a course like PSYC 100 is specifically required for their major, they may need to take it as a class at MC to ensure it transfers for a specific major.
  4. AP Credit Policies Differ by School
Not all colleges accept AP scores the same way or award credit the same for certain AP exams. Advisors and students should review the MC AP Transfer Comparison Chart and check with transfer schools directly, especially if a student is unsure of transfer plans.

Background:

The MD State “Transfer with Success” initiative asked MD public colleges in 2022 to accept AP scores of 3 to streamline the transfer process
.  MC has complied and recently updated our acceptance of scores of 3 for all AP tests.  Now MC, along with Towson, Frostburg, UMBC, UMES, UMGC and most other MD public schools, will accept an AP score of 3 as direct course equivalent.  Example:  a score of 3 on the AP Macroeconomics is accepted as a direct equivalent course of ECON 201 Principles of Economics (Macroeconomics) at most MD public colleges.  UMD, our closest and most frequent transfer destination, now also accepts scores of 3, but for the majority of AP tests, UMD continues to require a 4 or higher to accept AP credit as a direct course equivalent, so we need to inform incoming MC students of possible UMD-determined differences to plan accordingly.

Transfer Advising Points for Students with AP Scores

  1. Check the Dates:
    1. Montgomery College recently updated our AP Acceptance Charts to include scores of 3 for 16 tests where scores of 3 were previously not accepted.  This change applies to all AP Tests taken in May 2022 and after.  It is not retroactive.  For example, a score of 3 in AP Psych for a test taken in May 2021 or earlier will not be granted credit for PSYC 100 at MC.
    1. Incoming freshmen who graduated from high school this June 2025 will have taken AP tests this past May 2025 as seniors, in May 2024 as juniors, and in May 2023 as sophomores, so it is safe to assume that all incoming high school 2025 graduates presenting AP scores this year will follow the MC’s New “2022 and After” MC AP Chart.
  1. What is new?

MC’s acceptance of scores of 3 as direct equivalent courses mainly affects students planning to transfer to UMD or those who plan to transfer to highly competitive schools that may require a minimum of 4 for all AP tests. In the case of UMD, in over 30 instances, UMD continues to require a score of 4 or 5 for a direct course equivalency and awards 3 credits of “Lower level elective” or “Gen Ed Distribution credit” for a score of 3 rather than a direct course equivalency.

Example:  MC previously required a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Psychology test to earn credit for PSYC 100 here at MC.  Now, for AP Psych Tests taken in May 2023 or after, UMD gives 3 credits of a “Lower-level elective” for AP Psych scores of 3 and they continue to require a 4 or 5 to earn the direct equivalent of PSYC 100.

The MC change to grant PSYC 100 for an AP score of 3 (starting with AP Tests taken in May 2022 or after) means that students transferring to UMD’s Psychology or other majors that specifically require PSYC 100 (such Education, and Information Science) will need to take PSYC 100 as a class at Montgomery College if they want to complete the PSYC 100 course requirement at MC prior to transfer.  However, if a student’s major does not specially require PSYC 100, then UMD will accept the course as a Gen Ed BSSD requirement and there is no need to retake the class for transfer to UMD.

  1. What do these changes mean for Advising?
    1. Ideally you will review the MC AP Transfer Comparison Chart to understand how an AP score of 3 may require extra planning here at MC if the transfer destination is UMD.  It’s a simplification, but in most cases, a score of 3 will now grant credit for a specific class at MC, and if the class is not needed for the student’s major after transfer, they do not need to retake a course.  If the course fulfills a Gen Ed Requirement but it is not required for the major, UMD and other MD State transfer schools will continue to honor the Maryland State AP Transfer Policy that says if the course was used as a Gen Ed requirement, the student can transfer without being asked to repeat the class as long as the course is not also required for the major.   The example of an AP score of 3 in AP Psychology means that the 3 credits will transfer as a BSSD to UMD, but if the student’s major specifically requires PSYC 100, (examples Psychology, or Education, or Information Science) then they DO have to take the class at MC if they want to transfer with the MAJOR requirement of PSYC 100 completed.
    1. There are other cases where MC may grant credit for two courses / 6 credits for a score of 4, while UMD may only grant credit for one course / 3 credits for a score of 4 – examples are AP Histories – all, and AP Languages – all.  Example, MC grants HIST 116 and 117 6 credits for an AP World History score of 4, while UMD will only grant 3 credits/1 course for an AP World History score of 4.  This can affect the number of transfer credits if a student graduates from MC and expects to enroll at UMD with 60 transferable credits.
  1. Final Take-Aways
    1. Student is interested in transferring to schools other than UMD, or highly competitive schools where all AP scores must be a 4 or higher, or is unsure of transfer plan – send copy of the MC AP Transfer Comparison Chart and advise the student that not all schools accept AP scores in the same way that MC does, so researching how future transfer schools of interest will accept scores is important now even for first-time freshmen.
    1. Student is interested in transferring to UMD:  Send student a copy of the MC AP Transfer Comparison Chart and refer to UMD to meet with a UMD Pretransfer Adviser.  Do so with a Starfish Referral marked “TRANSFER_UMD-University of Maryland Pre-Transfer Advising” or send students this link:  go.umd.edu/MC2UMD

Transfer Advising - AP & 70 Credits Considerations for UM

Here are some transfer advising notes for students planning to transfer to UM regarding:

  • the new MD State AP Transfer policy regarding scores of 3
  • the new 70 Credit Transfer Maximum Policy
  • the new provision that all community college courses will transfer to four-year institutions.

There are considerations when advising current and incoming MC students who plan to transfer specifically to UM College Park or UM Shady Grove… and other MD schools as well.

AP Acceptance of Scores of 3 by the University of Maryland (UM)

UM is still reviewing how AP scores of 3 will be accepted.  The UM Transfer Credit Services Center will publish a list of changes before next May 2023 after MHEC has reviewed UM’s proposal to accept individual test scores of 3.  UM’s proposed list of how AP scores of 3 will be accepted is still under review and it will be submitted to MHEC in January 2023

At UM, the new acceptance of scores of 3 will go into effect for students taking AP tests starting this coming May 2023.  Regardless of the possible changes, this policy is NOT retroactive, so students who have AP scores now from AP tests taken in May 2022 or earlier will still fall under UM’s previous standards where a scores of 3 are only accepted for two tests - AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition. (Reference:  https://www.transfercredit.umd.edu/plc/APGenEd.pdf ).

Please inform all students who completed AP exams before this coming May ’23 that their scores will be accepted according to the AP Transfer Score charts showing now on the UM Transfer Credit Services website:  https://www.transfercredit.umd.edu/plc.html#ap; and please give students the link to the Montgomery College AP Comparison Chart so that they can see any differences that may exist between how MC and how UM will accept AP scores upon transfer:  https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/counseling-and-advising/transfer-resources/apcreditcomparisonchart10172022.pdf

The Long Version:  - AP Scores and Transfer to UM

In the past, MC and UM College Park have had variations in the way that AP scores are accepted.  It has always been important to inform MC students that even though MC may have granted credit for an AP score of 3, when a student later transfers to UM, the AP score of 3 may not be accepted.

Last year’s Maryland House Bill 966 regarding Transfer was passed to simplify the transfer process, especially for AP scores, and makes the requirement that all MD state public colleges will accept AP scores of 3.  Institutions have until this January 2023 to submit plans to show how scores of 3 will be accepted.

We have heard that some UM disciplines are currently asking MHEC for exceptions to allow acceptance of a score of 3 as a Lower Level Elective rather than as a specific direct equivalent.  For example, Economics @ UM has indicated that they may request an MHEC exception to allow the acceptance of a score of 3 for AP Macro or Microeconomics to be accepted as a Lower Level Elective rather than giving direct equivalency credit for ECON 200 or 201.  The same may be true for other disciplines, example – Psychology may ask for a similar exception to accept a 3 as an LLE and still require a 4 for a direct equivalency of their PSYC 100 General Psychology.  This is how UM currently accepts a score of 3 for AP English Language and Composition – students are given 3 credits of LLE for a score of 3, and are given credit for their ENGL 101 for a score of 4 or 5.  If the exceptions are approved, then it will still be important to see how both MC and UM will treat the acceptance of AP scores in the future.  Decisions are expected to be made and published by UM before May 2023 to inform incoming high school students who will be taking AP tests in May 2023.  Nothing has been officially determined at this point.

In the meantime, you can still use the MC AP Comparison Chart https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/counseling-and-advising/transfer-resources/apcreditcomparisonchart10172022.pdf  which was recently updated to show that some other four-year schools have already updated their acceptance policy – UMGC interpreted the new policy to accept scores of 3 as direct equivalencies to specific classes, so for example, a 3 in Macroeconomics will now be accepted by UMGC as ECON 201, aligning with the way MC accepts it.

Here is a refresher on the policy of “What Happens When MC Gives AP Credit for a Gen Ed Course based on a Score of 3 and UM Does Not Accept a Score of 3”

AP Credit transfer policy to Maryland State Public institutions: If a student satisfies a General Education Requirement at MC w/ an AP score of 3 (example, a score of 3 in Environmental Science @ MC fills a 4-credit Gen Ed Lab Science), then the MD public transfer institution should consider a Lab Sci. Gen Ed 4 credit requirement to be filled upon transfer, but for students who tested prior to May 2023, the student will have to 'make up' those 4 credits w/ transferable elective credits if a score of 3 is not accepted.  Under the present policy, the student needs to take another 4 credit class, can be any open elective, to “fill in” the AP credit that is not accepted.  The student doesn’t have to take another Gen Ed Science, that category is considered filled, so any elective credit will work.  Students may need to work with their MD public transfer institutions to ensure that this policy is applied after transfer.

Another example of when to be concerned about the discrepancy between AP score acceptances – MC may still give students more credits for a score of 4 than UM will grant, example – AP US History – MC gives 6 credits of HIST 201 & 202 to students with a score of 4, but UM gives only 3 credits of HIST 200 to students for a score of 4, this will be another area to be aware of when advising students who are transferring to UM.  This area is also subject to possible change while MC is also in the process of reviewing how scores of 3 will be accepted for all AP tests.

Do we have to remember all of this?  Not really – if you see a student with ANY AP scores on their record and if they say they want to transfer to UM, please provide them with the link to the UM Transfer Credit Center AP Lists https://www.transfercredit.umd.edu/plc.html#ap; , and also send them a link to the MC AP Comparison Chart and give them a Starfish Referral for Pre-Transfer Advising so they can sort things out directly with a UM Pre-Transfer Advisor, even if they are in the beginning stages of taking classes here at MC, to assure that they can get the most accurate information directly from UM.

Regarding the New 70 Credit Maximum and UM

Not all majors at UM can absorb an additional ten credits beyond 60 credits of lower level (100- or 200) credits, so it will be important to make that distinction with students.  For example, majors under the UM Smith School of Business require 58 credits that must be taken at the upper-level (300- and 400-level), so Business students will likely not be able to transfer more than 62 credits to UM.

This may be true for many majors at UM that have limited space for Open Electives; for example, Engineering and Biological Science majors at UM have little or no space in the Four-Year Plan for open electives and many have requirements for upper-level courses that can be taken only at UM.   List of all UM Four-Year Plans:  https://www.4yearplans.umd.edu/

MC will work with UM Pre-Transfer Advisors to develop a list of majors that will be able to accommodate additional credits beyond 60 taken at the community college level.  For some majors, like Computer Science, it may be possible for a student to take classes beyond the 60 credits to fulfill additional lower-level requirements like CMSC 216 prior to transfer, but this will also have to be considered carefully to determine whether Financial Aid will continue to pay for only 60 credits required for an Associate’s degree in the future.  Hopefully for majors where additional 100- and 200-level courses could be taken at MC, transfer agreements for credits taken beyond 60 can be developed to coordinate with Financial Aid to provide coverage.

Regarding the Transfer Provision that all CC courses will be accepted by MD public four-year institutions

This process is also still under review by four-year institutions who may currently be asking for exceptions.  Regardless of whether there will be exceptions, even if all courses from a discipline that UM does not offer must now be accepted, for example, if all CMAP or NWIT courses must be accepted in transfer, it is likely that they will transfer as Lower Level Electives (LLE’s) because no direct equivalencies exist.  Whether those LLE credits will be applicable to a major such as Computer Science or Engineering depends on the amount of space in the degree available for open electives/LLE’s.

This information is not presented as a criticism of UM by any means; they are exercising their right to ask for a review of how they propose to accept scores of 3 based on course content standards.  In addition, if all community college courses can be transferred to UM, there are majors that have a fixed number of lower-level program requirements and therefore not all open electives/ LLE’s will fit into all degrees, just as this is the case for students transferring courses into Montgomery College degrees.  Finally, increasing the transfer limit to 70 credits may be useful for some majors but not all depending on each degree’s minimum number of upper-level courses that must be completed at UM after transfer.

MC counselors and advisors need to use caution when advising students who are planning to transfer to UM so that we don’t misrepresent the new changes for students currently enrolled and also for those entering MC this coming Spring from high schools.  Until UM’s publishes their new AP Score acceptance list, we cannot imply that all scores of 3 will be accepted just as MC accepts them, and we cannot say definitively that 70 credits can now be taken at MC and all will transfer to UM, as this will depend very much upon specific majors.   We need to continue to refer students to UM Pre-Transfer Advisors either directly or by Starfish referral and continue to work with UM to get a better understanding of how the MD State Transfer Policy changes will apply to our students on a major-by-major basis.

Transfer of AP Credits

What Happens When MC Grants AP Credit for a Course but the Transfer Institution Does Not Accept It?

The AP Transfer Policy for Maryland State Schools is shown at the bottom of the MC AP Comparison Chart which is on this page, center column:  https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/counseling-and-advising/transferresourcesforcounselors.html

AP Credit transfer policy to Maryland State Public institutions: If a student satisfies a General Education Requirement with an AP score of 3 (example, a 3 in Environmental Science @ MC fills a 4-credit Lab Science, then the MD transfer institution should consider a Lab Sci. Gen Ed 4 credit requirement to be filled upon transfer, but the student will have to 'make up' those 4 credits w/ transferable elective credits if a score of 3 for AP Env. Sci. is not accepted.  Students may need to work w/ their MD public transfer institutions to ensure that this policy is recognized.

This is a good point to review as it’s complicated AND we see a lot of students planning to transfer to UM where it is often an issue.

“Trouble” AP credits for UM are:

1.      All AP Histories – US, European and World –
a.      MC grants credit for a score of 3, so if you see that a student has AP credit for just one HIST, then that’s a signal that the student got a score of 3 and UM will not accept a 3.
b.      MC also grants credit for TWO HIST’s if the student gets a 4 or 5, but UM only gives credit for ONE HIST with a score of 4 or 5, so for example if the student has Gen Ed Humanities filled with HIST 200 AP and also GEIR HIST 201, then you need to subtract one of those HIST courses from the transfer credit total.
2.      AP Languages – MC accepts a 3 for most World Language AP tests but UM does not accept a 3, only a 4 or 5.  And MC grants 6 credits of SPAN 201 & 202 for example, but UM only grants 3 credits of SPAN 203 for a score of 4 or 5.
3.      AP Government – MC grants credit for a 3 = POLI 101, but UM requires a minimum of a 4
4.      AP Biology – MC accepts a 3 and grants credit for BIOL 101; a score of 4 or 5 grants credit for BIOL 150, so if you see AP scores for BIOL 101 General Biology that indicates a score of 3.
5.      AP Chemistry - MC accepts a 3 and grants credit for CHEM 109/109L Chemistry and Society; a score of 4 or 5 grants credit for CHEM 131 so if you see AP scores for CHEM 109/109L that indicates a 3.

But a score of 3 is fine for these three subjects ONLY at UM:
1.      AP English Language and Composition is fine, MC grants ENGL 101 and UM grants credit for a Lower Level Elective - LLE
2.      AP English Language and Literature – MC grants credit for ENGL 190 Intro to Lit and UM gives credit for a LLE, so this Gen Ed credit does not need to be “replaced”
3.      AP Art History – transfers to UM as ARTT 150

Just to put it in other words, if a student has filled a Gen Ed Category with an AP score which will not be accepted by UM, if the student gets the MC General Education Program Completion Stamp on their transcript OR graduates from MC with an AA, AS or AAT, then UM will accept the whole Gen Ed Package as completed as usual but the student will need to “replace” the missing credits from an unaccepted AP score with any transferable ELECTIVE course.

Example:  Student has AP credit for AP HIST with a score of 3 used to fill a Humanities Distribution, and the student graduates with a total of 60 credits but UM will only accept 57 credits, so any general elective could be taken to replace the missing 3 credits, does NOT have to be a Humanities course.

Should a student pick up the extra 3 “missing” credits prior to transfer?

a.      One advantage to transferring with 60 transferable credits to UM is that the student is then able to take the needed Advanced Writing course (ENGL 391) in their first semester after transfer, if they come in with less than 60 credits and “make up” the missing credit in the first semester after transfer, then they miss out on having “junior” status and must wait a full semester to take Advanced Writing.

b.      Parking Lot Permits for commuters are based on the number of credits earned (!) so closer-in parking lot assignments are designated for students with 60 + credits, you can see that here:  https://transportation.umd.edu/parking/students

c.       UM majors at Shady Grove prefer that students enter with 60 credits completed, but this is also not required… Items 1 & 2 above do not apply to Shady Grove, but if the remaining credits still need to be made up, then it could be a stress to add them while at USG where full-time enrollment in 5 classes per semester is typically required and students can’t take 100- or 200-level classes so they would need to take an advanced 300/400 level elective to fill in the credits.

One more thing to consider – Financial Aid @ MC will not cover the additional credits needed to make-up AP credits because those credits may not be not needed for graduation from MC.  So yet another point to be aware of…

How do you keep all of this straight?  Print out the AP Comparison Chart  in color and hang it up or bookmark it on your computer.

Also you can go to the UM Transfer Services Center site at this link:  https://www.transfercredit.umd.edu/plc/APGenEd.pdf

This Gen Ed Transfer Policy for Maryland Schools also applies to IB and CLEP credits…  MC accepts most IB scores with a 5, but UM requires an IB score of 6 for many courses.   UM IB Score Chart:  https://www.transfercredit.umd.edu/plc.html#ib

For Private and Out-of-State Schools, search for “AP Credits” on each school’s site.

And, you can refer a student to me for advising if you detect AP or IB questions/issues, I can provide a more detailed look at the situation -  anne.schleicher@montgomerycollege.edu

Transfer Advising Update – Advanced Placement Credits & General Education Requirements

Students often bring Advanced Placement (AP) credits to Montgomery College; they are noted on the MC transcript as “CR” like other transferred-in courses.  It’s important to determine a student’s actual scores to know whether the credits will later transfer to another institution.  This is because MC currently accepts many AP tests with scores of 3 but some transfer institutions, notably UM College Park, require a minimum score of 4 for all AP tests except these three tests:  Art History, English Language and Composition, and English Literature & Comp.

An updated AP Comparison Chart for Sample Maryland Schools is attached; you can give this to students (by e-mail or print-out) so that they can make determinations.  You can also view a student’s original AP Test Scores through Perceptive Content (Image Now) where transfer documents such as transcripts and AP scores are housed.  Find the AP Comparison Chart always here:  http://advisingmc.blogspot.com/2018/11/comparison-chart-of-ap-advanced.html

MC is in the process of updating and raising minimum AP scores for many tests; however, those updates will not go into effect until Fall 2019.  In the meantime, students who have one or more AP scores of 3 may be caught short in the transfer process if they are not aware that a score of 3 for many tests may mean that the actual credits granted by MC will not transfer.

Here's the good news if the AP score has filled a General Education category at MC:  Maryland State transfer policy says that if a student is granted Gen Ed credit for a course at one school, then the fact that that Gen Ed course was fulfilled should be recognized by a transfer school without a course-by-course match.  So, for example, if a student has fulfilled a Gen Ed Lab Science at MC with an AP score of 3 on the AP Biology test = BIOL 101 4 cr. at MC, then the MD public transfer school should also consider the Gen Ed category of Lab Science to be fulfilled, but the student has to “make up” the 4 credits with transferable elective credits if a score of 3 earns no credit upon transfer.  This is NOT true for private and out-of-state schools, so it’s important to ask students to check AP score minimums at all schools where they are hoping to transfer.  A score of 4 or 5 typically will grant some credit at most schools, but scores of 3 are the big concern.

UM College Park is especially good about following this Maryland State Gen Ed Transfer Policy when it comes to AP scores of 3 – but UM wants to see a completed General Education Program in order for the policy to work.  So if the student has finished all of MC’s Gen Ed Program, demonstrated by completion of an AA, AS or AAT degree, then UM considers 30 credits of their lower-level Gen Ed requirements to be fulfilled.  But if a student has filled one or more Gen Ed categories with a score of 3 where UM does not accept a score of 3 (for example, an AP Biology score of 3 = BIOL 101 Lab Science @ MC but no credit at UM), then the student has to take additional transferable elective credits to fill in the missing 4 credits total to transfer with 60 credits.  Those additional transferable transfer credits do not have to be another Lab Science.

Common examples are:

·         AP Environmental Science score of 3 accepted as MC’s BIOL 105 & 106 4 credits and fulfills MC’s Gen Ed Lab Science.  UM grants no credit for a 3; a score of 4 or 5 in AP Env. Sci grants only 3 credits of Non-Lab Science; however, if an AA/AS/AAT degree is earned, a Gen Ed Lab Science is considered fulfilled by the BIOL 105 & 106 upon transfer to UM with a score of 3 but the student needs to provide 4 more elective credits, either at MC prior to transfer or taken at UM after transfer to fill in credits.

·         AP Histories at MC (American, European and World) – 3 credits of HIST granted at MC, no credit granted at UM; also MC accepts a score of 4 and grants 6 credits of HIST, but @ UM a score of 4 grants only one HIST, 3 credits.

·         AP Statistics score of 3 = MC’s MATH 117; this can fulfill a Gen Ed Mathematics requirement for some majors where a specific math is not listed; however, if a major at UM specifically requires a Statistics (examples, Business and Communication at UM both require STAT 100 = MATH 117), then the AP Stat score of 3 granting MATH 117 at MC will not fulfill the major requirement at UM and the student should take the MATH 117 class at MC to fill this major requirement.

·         AP English Language – a score of 3 at MC = ENGL 101, a score of 4 or 5 at MC = ENGL 101 & 102 6 credits, but at UM, a score of 3 = Elective only; a score of 4 or 5 = is accepted as 3 credits only of FSAW which means that a 4 or 5 fulfills the Gen Ed Writing Requirement/ENGL 101, but a 4 or 5 does not give a student the extra 3 credits of electives at UM.

If you are feeling completely overwhelmed in reading this, help is available!  I can be reached as an online transfer advisor part-time throughout the year.  You can refer a student to me for assistance, just ask them to contact me directly or you can e-mail me and CC the student to make the connection.   anne.schleicher@montgomerycollege.edu

Below is a rather extreme but real situation encountered recently in Online Transfer Advising - you can see the complicated explanation -

Subject: RE: Help with Transferring to UMD

Hi XXX -

I did a Business Audit for you today based on your record at MC.  Your audit is a little complicated because of your AP credits.

You sent your AP scores this past summer and they were evaluated on July 28, 2018.  MC has different minimum scores required for several AP tests, so MC has given you 9 credits, or 3 courses more worth of credit than UM will give you.  So
  • the Good News is that you can qualify for graduation from MC with no problem this coming Spring by taking just 3 classes – ACCT 222, CMAP 120 and ECON 202.
  • but the Bad News is that if you want to transfer to UM with 60 credits finished, you will need to add three more courses / 9 credits to “replace” credit that MC gave you.

The explanation:  UM only gives AP credit for scores of 4 or higher on every AP test except Art History, English Lit and English Lang.  You had:
  • a score of 3 in AP World History = HIST 116 @ MC but no credit at UM for a History course
  • a score of 3 in AP Government = POLI 101 @ MC but no credit for POLI 101 at UM
  • a score of 4 in AP English Language, for which MC gave you 6 credits, both ENGL 101 and 102, but UM will only give you 3 credits for one course = ENGL 102 @ MC = ENGL 101 @ UM so you ARE satisfying the UM English requirement but you won’t be granted 6 credits upon transfer.

Here is the UM AP Credit Chart:
http://www.transfercredit.umd.edu/plc/APGenEd.pdf

Unfortunately, you will need to replace these 9 credits with three more classes if you want to transfer to UM as a Junior with 60 credits.  OR you can just transfer with 51 credits finished, and take more classes there, that would be okay also, but that is only if you attend the Main Campus because UM Shady Grove doesn’t offer lower-level classes.

Okay, so hold on, this gets even more complicated –
  • because you filled a General Education category of Humanities with HIST 116, UM will consider the Humanities Gen Ed category to be completed when you earn your MC degree; same thing for POLI 101 which fills the Gen Ed category of Behavioral/Social Science [BSSD], so they will not ask you to replace the HIST 116 course with another Humanities or the POLI 101 with another Behav/ Social Science.
  • UM does not require MC’s ENGL 101 so you can replace the 3 credits of ENGL 101 that MC gave you with any elective course.
  • In summary, to replace the 3 missing AP courses, you can take any 3 elective courses, 3 credits each, either at MC or at UM.

You have to be careful in selecting electives @ MC because not all MC courses will transfer to UM.  For example, they only take one CMAP, CMAP 120, and the only MGMT course that transfers to UM for Business Majors is MGMT 201 Business Law, but that is not required.  You would be safe choosing any courses from the MC General Education List, for example you could take two three-credit HLTH’s and one ARTS like MUSC 117 World Music or MUSC 131 American Popular Music if those appeal to you.  Here is the UM Transfer Chart if you want to double-check the transferability of your elective courses if they are not listed on the MC Gen Ed List before taking them:
