Transfer Advising Updated - U of Maryland Baltimore School of Nursing Page (SP26)

The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Nursing Transfer Advising Page: Nursing – MC to UMB School of Nursing Traditional Transfer (PDF, Get Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader. Link opens in new window.)

has been updated on the MC Transfer Resources Page https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/transfer/transfer-resources.html .  Find this page under “Advising by Major”

Changes to the UM SON Advising Page include:

  1. The page no longer lists deadlines to apply to the UMB School of Nursing = UM SON, instead, it asks students to check on the deadlines themselves as this information may change.  Students should be looking at the UM SON Nursing Admissions page often and early in the planning process to keep up with current requirements.  https://www.nursing.umaryland.edu/academics/undergrad/bachelor-of-science-nursing/
  2. On Page 2, the MC to UM SON Notes section says that students may use CLEP Language Test Scores (French, German, Spanish) to fulfill a maximum of 2 Arts and Humanities courses on the Prereq’s list, this is also true for MC Nursing.  Encourage students to visit the CLEP Website and try the free Sample CLEP Test to gauge whether earning credit through what is essentially a 90 minute final exam in a language is a realistic option.  https://clep.collegeboard.org/clep-exams
  3. Encourage students to ask questions directly of UM SON – they have many options to speak with advisors shown on this page   https://www.nursing.umaryland.edu/admissions/visit-us/  They welcome questions!

What about the student who is unsure of whether to apply to UM SON or MC Nursing?

Providing students with a copy of the MC Paths to Nursing Page
Paths to Nursing – MC AS, MC-UMB Dual Admission Nursing and Direct Transfer Options (PDF, Get Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader. Link opens in new window.) could help students see the differences between the two programs.  Years ago, the State of Maryland was going to require a BSN to work in MD hospitals starting in 2020, however, the Covid Pandemic blew that up and the provision has never been adopted.  A quick survey of local hospitals shows that students can be employed with an RN (MC degree), experience still also preferred, and some hospitals hire RN’s with the condition that applicants will actively be working on completing a BSN.  MC’s Nursing Program actively works to connect students with BSN degree completion programs, including but not limited to the UM SON program.  Students can safely start on the requirements for both the RN and the BSN options as MC courses needed are nearly the same in the first 2 semesters and decide in future semesters about which degree to seek.

LPN PROGRAM AT ECEC (Summer 2025 Update)

For LPN they should email LPN@montgomerycollege.edu

The LPN program is 8 months – 4 terms of 7 weeks each.  Each term is 5 credits, so the complete LPN program is 35 credits.

The terms either start in Fall and end in Spring (2 terms each semester), or start in Spring and end in Summer II.

All classes are at the ECEC.

Two main pathways to LPN:

--Students who have failed the 1st year of the nursing program, may enter the LPN program.  They may return to the nursing program after a year as an LPN, and completing a summer bridge program.

--Outside students – CNAs, etc. who wish to join the LPN program.  Prereqs:  BIOL130+131; PSYC100; ENGL101.

LPN program coordinators:

Nursing Update - Summer 2025

Nursing, since it has 192 spots available 2x per year: Has ‘opened up’ the possibilities of acceptance.

First, for the April 1 deadline/ Fall start, students can be in process of BIOL 213 when applying,.

Theoretically, they could be finishing BIOL 212 and take BIOL 213 SSI.

I want to double check on the latter, Brenda Knopp not back until next week.

Secondly, for the August 1 deadline/Spring start, yes, they can apply ( taking TEAS by then ) while:

Taking BIOL 212 SSI, and BIOL 213 SSII.

I am getting questions if students can take BIOL 213 in Fall for the 8-1 deadline. No they cannot.

Has to be summer.

Third, BIOL 228 also has the five year rule.  So again, can’t be taken Fall, has to be summer, as one student was doing.

Number 4, thought I was done, nope:  If not offered summer or semester desired, remember it is EITHER BIOL 228 or BIOL 213 students can take for that five year rule.

Oh look, another one:  #5.  As of July 1, Tim Fuss will become Nursing Chairperson, and Morgan Kee becomes the Health Sciences Chair.

Nursing Health Science Application Q&A Re: Transcripts

From Maureen Mirowski:

I asked after the nursing info session this week re: the transcripts question.  See Brenda Knopp’s (Nursing Program Chair) answers below. Note she says ‘I think’ on the first one. I think I’ll stick with just send the officials again!

Two things:

1.  Regarding international transcripts from WES, ECE or JSA:

They should keep a copy for themselves. I think as long as they send a copy and it is already in the system it will be fine.

2.  **If you have had your OFFICIAL transcript from another college evaluated within the last year AND have not taken any more classes at that facility you do not need to submit OFFICIAL transcripts. However, you are asked to submit unofficial transcripts.

**If your transcripts were evaluated OVER one year of the deadline for the application you need to submit your OFFICIAL transcript as part of the application.

Pre Nursing and Change of Major Form Guidance

Dear Counseling Family,

As a member of the General Studies Leadership Team, I am working with a Pre-Nursing cohort of students. When I am advising a pre-nursing student I always have them switch to General Studies STEM if they are pursuing the BSN/Dual Admissions program.

I recently found out that it is preferred if the student keeps the 570/Nursing as a second major.

When assisting the student with the change of major form, please have them fill in Gen Studies STEM 611B as the New Curriculum Title and Nursing 570 as the Second Curriculum Title.

This is important for State Level funding, as well as helping to identify which students from GS STEM are pre-nursing.

Thanks!

Transfer Advising for Nursing Majors

 Hello Everyone,

Following up on Maureen Mirowski’s message yesterday about the MC Nursing Program and the amazing fact that MC now admits 192 students per semester, this is a good time to send out the new attached “MC Paths to Nursing with Transfer Options” document that shows three different ways to become a nurse.

Maureen mentioned the great news that RN’s with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) are in demand, even in hospital settings.  The State of MD previously said that starting in 2020, to work in a Maryland hospital, students would need a BSN; however, the current critical shortage of nurses shows that some hospitals are hiring RN’s with an Associate’s in Nursing with the expectation that they must be actively engaged in working on a BSN within the first 12 months of being hired.  ADN/RN’s continue to find employment in private practices and other medical settings.  BSN’s will typically have more employment opportunities,  may be eligible for more promotions, and over time they generally will earn more money than an ADN/RN – this MC Transfer Nursing Paths document has a link to an article comparing ADN and BSN career information.

The focus of the MC Transfer Paths to Nursing document is TRANSFER - this does not replace information that students need to seek directly from the MC Nursing Department to enter MC Nursing, and the Paths document emphasizes the need for students to attend a Nursing Information Session at both MC and at BSN schools early in their planning to plot out a path.

Other advising points include

·        Estimated time frames to finish programs – this is UNOFFICIAL and every student will be different, but the idea is to show that it can takes two or more semesters to finish prerequisite courses in a sequence BEFORE students can apply to a Nursing Program.

·       Did you know?  MC has MANY transfer agreements in place for MC Nursing students, not just UMB-School of Nursing – see Page 4.

·       A few RN-to-BSN completion programs do not require CHEM 131 (example, UMGC).

·       This Paths document urges students to start preparing for the TEAS test early – working on Reading Comprehension and Math skills in the first several semesters at MC before later studying science topics.

·       GPA Calculation explained - most BSN Nursing programs calculate an admissions GPA based on all grades including those showing from repeated courses, this is important to note if you see a student who has repeated several courses.  MC Nursing calculates the GPA on the most recent 24 credits earned.  Details in the doc!

Things may change (feel free to suggest edits), so an updated copy of this MC Transfer Paths to Nursing doc can always be found in the shared One Drive that Julie set up for us.

Directions to get to One Drive for Advising Documents:  [as “Julie’s Warehouse of Important Doc’s!”]

1.    Log into MyMC on the web (not your regular Outlook log-in),

2.    Then click on the E-Mail Icon right next to the Blackboard Icon at the top of the page.

3.    This brings you to Montgomery College Office Online Page (it has a black banner across the top).

4.    In the top left corner, right next to the MC logo, click on the square of 9 white dots to bring up Apps, then click on One Drive.

5.    Then click the words “Advising Doc’s”, then click on the word “Transfer” – and click on the word “Nursing”

There is also an updated MC Transfer Advising to UMB School of Nursing Traditional Nursing BSN page available on the MC Transfer Resources for Counselors and Program Advisors Page -  the Traditional Nursing page is for students who plan to apply directly to UMB SON.  The big change on that page is that UMB has two deadlines now in Summer, July 15 Priority and a Sept. 1 Regular deadline for a Spring Admission to UMB Nursing.  It is also linked in the attached Paths to Nursing document.  A quick trip to the UMB School of Nursing page reveals that they are still accepting applications for Spring 2023 despite the Sept. 1 deadline!

Always need to take good care of our future nurses – more than one of us has been cared for by a nurse who was a former MC student!

Greetings teammates,

Some good news which began Fall, 2022:  Nursing now accepts 192 students per semester!

384 students each year.

The point system didn’t even come into play with more spots than students.

Amazing!

In addition, students with their RN ( also known as ADN ) will have no trouble getting hired in this current climate.

It won’t last forever, so still advising students also take the recommended BSN transfer courses while at MC, if it works out to do so, less expensive.

As there is a drug/alcohol test 1x per year within all programs ( except Medical Coder/Biller Certificate which is for one year ):

Medical cannabis is not allowed for these programs per the clinical sites.

FYI,

Maureen

Nursing - Transfer Credits and Previous Bachelor's Degrees

Hello Everyone,

Met with two pre-Nursing students this week who both have previous college credits.

Student 1 - has a Bachelor of Arts in a humanities field with no biological sciences.  This student believed (or misunderstood) after talking with MC C & A that applying to MC’s Nursing AS for an RN is the best option.  Strong student with a 3.5 overall GPA.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) School of Nursing has a separate entry path for holders of any type of US bachelor’s degrees – students only need to complete 7 courses maximum total, not the full list of 59 credits for first-degree seeking BSN students.  UMB can advise a student whether there is a need to finish an AS degree and become an RN with MC first.  For most students with a US Bachelors and at least a 3.0 overall GPA, completing an RN with MC first may not be necessary.   A student may think that getting an RN first is less time-consuming, but in the state of Maryland (as of 2020), nurses who want to work in a hospital setting need a BSN – this is why MC has developed several BSN Completion Transfer Agreements to help a student move quickly into a BSN after earning an RN with us.  For the student with a previous bachelor’s, it could take less time to add CHEM 131 to the BIOL prereq’s and go directly to a 2-year BSN completion program.

MC’s Transfer Advising Page for UMB Nursing Page mentions the 7 classes needed for Bachelor’s holders.  See the fine print on the top of this page -
Nursing – MC to UM School of Nursing Traditional Transfer with MC-UMB Dual Enrollment Program - this page also advises students to consult with UMB SON directly.  Find this page on the MC Transfer Resources for Counselors & Advisors page.  www.montgomerycollege.edu/counseling-and-advising/transferresourcesforcounselors.html

Student 2 – has many credits from two different previous colleges.  Wants to apply to directly to UMB School of Nursing BSN.  Also has an AP Psychology exam score of 3 (this is showing in the student’s Perceptive Content file along with previous two transcripts).  Student could have been referred first or concurrently to UMB School of Nursing for a review of her previous college credits to develop an accurate list of  prerequisites to be taken at the community college.  UMB would also have told her that a score of 4 is needed for every AP exam regardless of how her previous school accepted it, so taking a General Psych is probably needed.  For this student, some previous low grades may also be an issue, so UMB Nursing admissions advisors are in the better position to advise about the chance of admission directly to their BSN or whether going for the MC/UMB Dual Admission Program would be more appropriate.

Are you supposed to remember all of this?  Fortunately, no.  Just know that if a student is asking about Nursing and has some college credits earned elsewhere or has a Bachelor’s degree in any field, have the student contact UMB SON first for advising.  UMB SON offers a link to live chat weekdays on their page. www.nursing.umaryland.edu/academics/undergrad/bachelor-of-science-nursing/

Ditto for other BSN schools – students should start with the transfer destination for advisement if they have credits earned at other colleges.

If students have no sciences or math completed among their previous college credits, then it would be safe to help them get started in those courses at MC while they are actively having their previous college credits reviewed by UMB School of Nursing.

Update to MC - UMB Nursing Transfer Advising Page

Thanks to the hard work of Elizabeth Kirby and MC Nursing representatives, their negotiations have prompted some slight updates to the MC Transfer Advising Page for UMB School of Nursing.

This updated page is located both on the MC Transfer Resources for Counselors & Program Advisors Page https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/counseling-and-advising/transferresourcesforcounselors.html

also on the MC ADN to BSN page:  https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/counseling-and-advising/transfer-resources/nursingmctoumbschoolofnursingtraditionaltransfer.pdf

Please check the date at the top of the page:  Update 5-17-21, if this date does not appear, refresh the page in your browser.

The changes are:

  • Students who enter the MC Nursing – UMB School of Nursing Dual Admission Program will not need to take a second general math from MATH 120 or higher – they only need to take MATH 117 Statistics.

    This is not true yet
for students applying directly to the UMB School of Nursing Traditional BSN, so the advising page suggests taking MATH 117 first and then taking MATH 120 in the final semester if preparing for a direct transfer to UMB School of Nursing (Shady Grove or Main Campus).  You can see this on    Page 1 – the line for MATH 120 now says “MATH 120 Survey of College Math or MATH150 Elem. Applied Calculus or MATH 165 Precal. or MATH 181 Calculus. Note that for the MC-UMB Dual Admission Program, ONLY MATH 117 Elements of Statistics is required; take elective instead”  the Suggested Semester Sequence on Page 2, and  also on the MC General Studies STEM worksheet where MATH 117 now shows as the Math Foundation and under Electives, it says “MATH 120 Survey of College Math or MATH 150 or 165 or 181 only if applying to UMB BSN directly, take Elective for MC - UMB Dual Admission”

In short, advise taking MATH 117 Elements of Statistics as the first MATH for nursing students.

The MC – UMB Nursing Program is called “Dual Admission” rather than the 3+1 Program.

Other reminder points:

  1.  There is no change to the English sequence which is still a little tricky to understand but basically, students can take ENGL 101 & 102 or ENGL 101 & ENGL 103 to finish the 2 required English courses, ENGL 103 is not REQUIRED any more.  Please read through the fine print on Page 1 to see all of the options in case a student did not have to take ENGL 101 at MC.

  2.  Got AP credits?  If a student has ANY AP credits granted by MC, be sure to ask whether the student had any scores of “3” – UMB will only accept scores of 4 & 5, so while MC could have given the student these classes with a score of 3 (ENGL 101, MATH 117, POLI 101), UMB will not accept those credits.  Ask the student to double-check AP credits granted or use Perceptive Content to view AP scores.

  3. Remember that UMB SON calculates a student’s GPA based on all classes ever taken, they do not follow the MC Repeat Policy where the first grade is excluded from the GPA.

  4. And finally, for all students who are certain that they want to apply to UMB Traditional BSN only, it is still helpful to point out that they can apply to MC’s Nursing & the MC - UMB Dual Admission Program at the same time just to have an alternate option. This requires an adjustment of the timing of the TEAS test to meet MC’s Summer Deadline of August 1st for Fall compared to UMB’s Sept. 1st deadline for Fall.

Thanks again Elizabeth for this good news about MATH 117 only for students entering the MC-UMB Dual Admission Program!

Update UMSON Dual Admission

 All,

There are some changes headed our way for the MC to the University of Maryland School of Nursing Dual Admission Program. Once all the changes have been updated and finalized, I will share out with the group.

But I wanted to share a change that is now implemented related to math. UMSON will now only require MATH 117. Please advise students to take MATH 117 if they are interested in applying for the UMSON Dual Admission Program. If students have already completed MATH 120 or another math- this can be used as part of the elective requirement for the new agreement.

Please trust me; this will make more sense once everything is finalized. I apologize for sending this out piecemeal; as we advise students to take math over the summer, this is important to know now.

Any questions, please send me an email.

BIOL150 - Nursing - Is it Required?

From: Mirowski, Maureen A <maureen.mirowski@montgomerycollege.edu>

Sent: Monday, February 22, 2021 1:39 PM
To: Counseling (CW) Discipline <counselingcw@montgomerycollege0.onmicrosoft.com>
Subject: The infamous biology 150

Let's do a little review:

It is stated on the Health sciences application, biology 150 may be needed after biology 212 and 213 transfer.

But when, for example, a PGCC student has taken biology 212, biology 213, and biology 210, which transfers into the college, they are also given credit for biology 101, the intro biology they took there.

This becomes the additional four credit hard science that suffices if needed for graduation.

Marjorie Davis decides this for the Takoma Park Silver Spring campus.

Therefore, the student does not need biology 150.

In other cases, I think I recall Hood or FCC, when a student hasn't had to take an intro biology, and 212/213 transfer:

If they have not taken microbiology, the student still needs biology 150 in order to take 210.

If students are applying to other programs, of which none need biology 210, and, the student has another four credit hard science, i.e. chem 131, Ms. Davis can then decide to use that four credit hard science.

If a four credit hard sciences needed, other than for microbiology, students can then take any from our general education program last.

Doesn't have to be biology 150.

This is my understanding, and it took years to get here. So in fear of whether they needed it or not, students would take it proactively. Otherwise they had a choice in my advising that they could wait and see if the registrar indicated needing it and take it later, because students could still apply without biology 150.

And biology 150 used to be listed on the Health sciences application.

UMB School of Nursing English Proficiency

Students applying to the University of Maryland, School of Nursing (UMB SON) must show proof of graduation to demonstrate their English Language Proficiency.

However, for students who are in the process of graduating, UMB is willing to accept a statement from an MC Counselor that the degree is in progress and they waive the need for TOEFL scores or their own English Language Proficiency Exam.  A sample e-mail is below, including the address to use for an e-mailed statement.

NURSING Transfer Advising Page - UPDATED

Important Changes:

1)      ENGL 103 IS NO LONGER REQUIRED in addition to ENGL 102.  UM now accepts ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 or 103 as the 2-course English Composition sequence. (UMB School of Nursing has confirmed all of these sequences as of 11/25/19)

a.      Of course, some fine print still exists – here’s how it appears on the MC Transfer Advising Page for Nursing:

NEW – as of 11/13/19 Both ENGL 102 and ENGL 103 are no longer required to transfer Spring 2020 & after.
UMB English Composition Requirement – two courses, 6 credits - take one 2-course sequence from 1. or 2.:
1.  ___ ENGL 101/101A College Writing  and ___ ENGL 102 Writing & Research OR  ____ENGL 103 Writing/Workplace
OR – if you did not take MC ENGL 101 based on placement or rec’vd 101 credit for an AP ENGL Lang score of 3, you need:
2. ___ ENGL 102 Writing/Res. and ONE from: ___ ENGL 103 OR  _____ ENGL Literature OR ___ ENGL264 Creative Writing.

• If you have already taken ENGL 101 and 102 and 103, ENGL 101 will count as an Elective in General Electives below.
• For ENGL 101 or 102 accepted by MC from another college, contact UMB now for an evaluation of college transcripts as UMB may differ from MC in accepting credits: www.nursing.umaryland.edu/academics/undergrad/bachelor-of-science-nursing/

b.      Exceptions to ENGL 101 – some students will need to “replace” ENGL 101 credit with another ENGL course with ONE from: ___ ENGL 103 OR  _____ ENGL Literature OR ___ ENGL264 Creative Writing.  Who?
                                                  i.      Students who place directly into ENGL 102 through Placement Testing or SAT/ACT scores
ii.      Students who transfer in an ENGL from another Maryland school where only one Freshman English course is required (for example, Frederick Community College’s ENG 101 transfers to MC as our ENGL 102, but as noted above students should also check this directly with UMB)
iii.      Students who earned AP English Language credit for ENGL 101 with a score of 3 (because UMB only accepts AP scores of 4 or higher) – you can check specific AP scores in Image Now – Perceptive Content.

2)    STUDENTS WITH TRANSFER CREDITS FROM OTHER COLLEGES – please immediately recommend that students with transfer credits have those credits evaluated directly by UMB when they start at MC.  This is a simple process, as UMB encourages students to submit unofficial transcripts and will send a detailed list of how those credits will be accepted through their Traditional BSN Admissions Webpage,  www.nursing.umaryland.edu/academics/undergrad/bachelor-of-science-nursing/
Scroll down to see this note in the right column:
Find out how your prerequisites transfer.
Before you begin the admissions process, you can submit copies of your unofficial transcript(s) to us for review, and an admissions counselor will advise you on your requirements for admission.

3)      The One Additional Social Science can include an MC BSSD HLTH Health course:
a.      One Additional Social Science (3 cr.)                 From: ANTH, ECON, GEOG, HIST, POLI, SOCY, PSYC, [WMST 101 only if taken Fall 2019 and after], or these specific MC HLTH courses only: HLTH 131, 160 , 170, 212, 225
b.      And you already know that WMST 101 can apply as a Social Science also only if taken Fall 2019 or after…
4)      HISTORY courses taken as Humanities also apply in the “Additional Social Science” category, not as “Arts or Humanities” – this is noted on the Advising Page.
5)      For Arts and Humanities, CLEP credits in World Languages of French, German and Spanish can fill 2 courses of the 3 course requirements:
UMB accepts CLEP FREN/GERM/SPAN Language tests for 2 Humanities courses. UMB & MC use the same CLEP test scores, if you have earned CLEP FREN/GERM/SPAN credits @ MC, 2 courses may apply to UMB Humanities. www.nursing.umaryland.edu/admissions/faq/
You can refer students to the CLEP World Languages Sample Test so they can decide for themselves whether they are ready for the test, just Google “CLEP Language Tests” or go to  https://clep.collegeboard.org/world-languages  Students typically are granted credit for 101, 102 (Elementary Level) and also 201 (Intermediate I) depending on proficiency.
6)      Page 3 of the Transfer Advising Page for Nursing includes a General Studies STEM degree audit with UMB Nursing notes.  The GEIR notes are confusing but basically, a student can take:  For GEIR #1 - COMM 108/112 or an Arts or Hum and for GEIR #2 - a HLTH if desired, can be any GEIR HLTH if the student has already fulfilled the Additional Social Sciences requirement.  Still confusing!  But this does show how a HLTH can fit, especially now that ENGL 101 is accepted, this opens space for a General Elective which can be a HLTH for students completing an AA degree.

7)      REPEAT COURSE POLICY – Page 2 states this under Will repeating science courses hurt my chance of admission? , but not all students fully understand that UMB does not use the same “Exclusion” policy that MC uses to calculate a GPA – UMB uses all grades from all attempts at courses to calculate a GPA.  Students cannot apply for a Direct Admit to the Traditional BSN if they do not have the minimum overall GPA of a 3.0 from MC and any other colleges attended combined.
8)      New pre-Nursing students don’t need to immediately choose between MC Nursing 3+1 and trying for a UMB Direct Admit into the Traditional BSN Program when they start on requirements.  A decision about whether to apply to MC Nursing 3+1 can come after they see whether their grades in the first several semesters make them competitive for a Direct Admit.  But early on, please advise all students (whether Direct Admit to BSN or 3+1) to attend BOTH Nursing Information Sessions.  This note appears at the top of Page 2:

All students should attend a UMB Nursing Information Session
(Walk In or Online) www.nursing.umaryland.edu/admissions/visit-us/
AND attend a Montgomery College Nursing Information Session for MC/UMB 3+1 Program Info: www.montgomerycollege.edu/nursing

Nursing - 80% BSN by 2020 Initiative

Regarding what we discussed, I hope this information on recommendation 4 in the IOM report is helpful:  http://nationalacademies.org/hmd/Reports/2010/The-Future-of-Nursing-Leading-Change-Advancing-Health/Recommendations.aspx?page=3
Also, this article gives a little more insight on the effects of the recommendation on healthcare organizations: https://www.rn.com/headlines-in-health/driving-factors-behind-the-80-percent-bsn-by-2020-initiative/
