Transfer Update Notes from March 28 Meeting

MC Transfer Resources for Counselors and Program Advisors: www.montgomerycollege.edu/counseling-and-advising/transferresourcesforcounselors.html

The three new pages discussed are in the far Right Column titled “Transfer by Majors” and “Transfer - MC to UM Four Year Plans”.

  1. Computer Science Transfer Planning – for UM and All Schools – MC Counselors will be on the frontlines to help students determine whether they fall under the Computer Science LEP “Prior to Fall 2024” group or “After Fall 2024” for transfer to UM.  The key factor is that all high school students graduating this Spring (May/June) will be in the “After Fall 2024” group regardless of whether they have already completed Dual Enrollment or Early College credits.  The other important takeaway is – refer to UM Pre-Transfer Advising go.umd.edu/MC2UMD

Anthony Solano just asked a good question – a graduating high school student has made an appointment for advising to plan to transfer to UM as a Computer Science major.  He wanted to know what to say to this student -  my response is:

If a graduating high school senior makes an appointment in advance to discuss Computer Science & transfer to UM, send the student the link to the Computer Science Transfer Planning page before the meeting:  Computer Science Transfer Planning – UM and All Schools

If meeting in person, tell the student that admission to UM’s Computer Science major will now be extremely competitive for all transfer students graduating from high school this year 2024 and after so it will be important to look at the CS admission requirements and also to plan for a secondary major if the primarily goal is to go to UM.

If the primary goal is to major in Computer Science, the transfer advising document shows requirements for other nearby schools offering this major.

UM College Park is the only school at this time that will have extremely competitive requirements for admission as a Computer Science major.

Being admitted to other majors at UM aside from Computer Science will be less complicated.  For all other majors at UM, meeting MTAP requirements of a 3.0 gpa, college-level ENGL and MATH completed and earning 30 credits should be sufficient for admission to most UM majors with the two exceptions of Computer Science (extremely competitive, only 100 seats for transfer students per year) and Business (for Business, a 3.5 overall GPA is typically needed).

And refer to UM Pre-Transfer Advisors go.umd.edu/MC2UMD

I would suggest helping the student enroll in the first semester classes for our MC Computer Science AA (shown on Page 4 of the Advising document) while they are considering transfer options.

  1. Psychology Major Transfer Chart  - this page shows that the new Psychology AA is designed for maximum transferability to all schools - if a student has a particular transfer school in mind, the General Studies SSAH degree may allow flexibility to streamline choices to courses specifically needed for transfer.
  1. Information Science and Information Systems to UM

Members of the MC Transfer Resource Council (TRC) are available to help with questions about transfer:

Germantown – Barb LaPilusa, Amanda Darr
Rockville – Jessica Present, Dana Baker
Takoma Park/Silver Spring – Jose Medrano, Flor Romero-Slowing

At Large/Online Advising - Anne Schleicher

Transfer Agreements – Justin Edgar
