STUDENT‐ATHLETE ADVISING “GAME PLAN”

As of July 1, 2012 what athletic teams will be on our campuses?
  • Germantown campus – men’s baseball and women’s volleyball
  • Rockville campus – women’s basketball and softball, men’s and women’s track, and men’s and women’s soccer
  • Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus – men’s basketball, and men’s and women’s tennis
In order for a student‐athlete to be eligible to play a sport, how many credit hours should they be registered for each regular (fall and spring) semester?
  • Student‐athletes must* be registered for 12 credit hours in order to be eligible to compete. However, similar to Financial Aid regulations, developmental courses that carry no credit can be considered. In cases where semester hours are different than credit hours awarded (e.g., EN101A, MA181, etc.), only the credit hours count. For example, if a student‐athlete was registered for EN101A (3 cr/5 sem), MA099 (0 cr/4 sem), BI107 (4 cr/4 sem), and PY102 (3 cr/3 sem) they would have a total of 10 credits hours, but for NJCAA compliance 14 “credit” hours total.
*NOTE: Student‐athletes with a documented disability may be granted relief from this requirement and should consult the Athletic Director and/or their DSS counselor concerning this.
Does a student‐athlete have to take all of their courses at the campus where their sport is located? For example, if a student is a member of the women’s tennis team do they have to take all of their classes at TP/SS?
  • No. With the change in our athletic program on July 1, 2012 MC will became a single, multicampus NJCAA member with only one College team available for each sport. Therefore, this allows students to cross campuses to play sports on any campus, as well as take courses and be advised on any campus.
How should student‐athletes register for classes? Are there any holds that impact the registration process?
  • While in‐season student‐athletes must register/add classes using a paper registration form in‐person at the Admissions Office. Student‐athletes have an “athletic hold” on their record during their season of play, but that doesn’t keep them from registering. This hold does not allow student‐athletes to drop below the minimum 12 credit‐hour requirement while competing. If a class must be dropped while the hold is in place a registration form must be signed by the Athletic Director or designee. Out‐of‐season, the hold is removed so studentathletes can register and drop online, without a signature.
If I have questions about advising student‐athletes who should I contact?

Early Placement Student Assessment and Enrollment Process (Update)

The following are highlights from an email memo sent from Dr. Walker-Griffea, Senior Vice President for Student Services, to the College community on Friday, April 19th concerning Early Placement Student Assessment and Enrollment Process.

Who is Early Placement?
The umbrella term “early placement” will be used as the institution’s operational definition for dually enrolled and concurrently enrolled student populations, as well as those seeking participation in the Early Placement program who have completed their sophomore year with the appropriate unweighted grade point average.
EP Admission & Enrollment Process (please note that an implementation date for these new processes has not been finalized, but a recommended timeline is being developed):
• The admission requirements, policies, and procedures for early placement students will be consistent collegewide. High school students seeking summer courses will follow early placement procedures.
• The enrollment process for early placement students will be centralized through the Office of Academic Initiatives, with a full-time presence on all campuses. Academic Initiatives staff will track early placement student data to capture success rates, future college attendance predictions, and student course enrollment profiles.
• Enrollment Services leadership will develop a process for handling and evaluating documents from home schooled students.

EP Recommended Procedural Changes (please note that these recommendations will be taken to the President's Executive Counsel and then to the College Council for action items):
• Definition of college level for early placement students
• Number of courses an early placement student can enroll in each semester and summer term
• Prohibition of early placement students from developmental course offerings in any form
• Conditions of enrollment for early placement students under the age of 16
The committees (Early Placement Student [EPS] Committe and CAPDI) will continue to work on other issues to assist in simplifying the early placement student processes.  Please contact EPS committee members if you have any questions or concerns: Judy Ackerman, Eunice Akitobi, Monica Brown, Ernest Cartledge, Melissa Gregory, Ever Grier, Audrey Hill, David Jean-Julien, Katie Mount, Marcus Peanort, Don Pearl, Akima Rogers, Karen Roseberry, Rose Sachs, Elena Saenz, Clemmie Solomon, Clarice Somersall, Beverly Walker-Griffea, and Kathy Wessman.

MC does not accept transfer credits from Straighterline

In case you see students asking about Straighterline credits we do not accept them at MC.

(That said, it is possible that Straighterline credits might get transferred in for our military students through ACE reports.)

Transfer of AP/IB Credits to UMD's Gen Ed Program

AP/IB credits & their applicability towards the new General Education program at UMD:

Up to 6 AP exams can be used to fulfill the 8 Distributive Studies areas for General Education. In addition to satisfying these 6 Distributive Studies areas, please note that AP exams can also be used to satisfy the Fundamental Studies requirements but again only 6 courses can be used from AP and IB exams towards the Distributive Studies requirement area for General Education.

*Note: The coordinator of UMD's Transfer Credit Center, Mary Bell, stated that there is not a limit on the number of AP credits that students are allowed to transfer, just a limit in regards to the General Education requirements.
