Resources for Internships

Information provided by Student Employment Services, Montgomery College https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/student-employment-services

What is an internship?

An internship is a professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work related to a student’s field of study or career interest. An internship gives a student the opportunity for career exploration and development, and to learn new skills. It offers the employer the opportunity to bring new ideas and energy into the workplace, develop talent and potentially build a pipeline for future full-time employees

Before Applying to Internships:

Create a Resume: This is very important because employers will look for a reason to hire you based on the skills and knowledge you have related to your major.

Be sure to include the following:

•Knowledge and skills you have in your major and “industry-specific” software, hardware, skills

•Education: list Montgomery College, High School, and any other college trainings

•Work Experience: paid jobs you have held

•Academic Projects: what you have learned in your classes

•Volunteer Experience: community-service or volunteer (especially within your major)

•Clubs and Organizations involvement

If you need help with creating a resume, email a Student Employment Services representative from your campus to schedule an appointment:

•Germantown Campus: Ms. Pat McGlone at pat.mcglone@montgomerycollege.edu

•Rockville Campus: Dr. Lucy Vitaliti at lucy.vitaliti@montgomerycollege.edu or Ms. Beth Reilly atbeth.reilly@montgomerycollege.edu

Student Employment Services For Spring 2023

As we head into the Spring 2023 Semester, I want to share information about Student Employment Services and how we serve our students to help them persist in their studies and move toward their goals.  Your partnership and referrals help us support them.

Job Search Support for Students:

Student Employment Specialists work on each campus to help students with resumes (polishing or writing them from scratch), interviewing skills, job search and networking strategies, and effective use of free resources such as Big Interview (an online interviewing tool the college provides) or our College Central Network Online Job Board.  This online job board has 300+ jobs (on- and off-campus) just for MC students on any given day.  These jobs range from student assistant positions, to non-career-related jobs that will build transferrable skills and help our students pay bills, to career-launching opportunities, to mid-level positions that require more experience.

Embedded Classroom Support:

Student Employment Specialists can also provide Embedded Classroom Support to students in the form of conducting in-person or virtual (zoom) workshops on a variety of topics, ranging from an Overview of Student Employment Office Services (which can be very brief) to full-class-period workshops on resume writing, interviewing, and other specific job search topics. These presentations must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.

If you want a whole class to work with a Student Employment Specialist, please contact the appropriate person at least two weeks in advance to discuss the best strategies for this use of our services.

To schedule embedded classroom support or refer students for help, contact your campus’ Student Employment Specialist:

At Germantown: Ms. Pat McGlone – 240.567.1970 pat.mcglone@montgomerycollege.edu

At Rockville: Dr. Lucy Vitaliti – 240.567.2352  lucy.vitaliti@montgomerycollege.edu

At TP/SS: Joseph O’Hare – 240.567.1630  joseph.o’hare@montgomerycollege.edu

Employer Relations/Niche Job Fairs:

Roberta Buckberg, our Employer Services Specialist is here for you to:

  • Refer employers asking how to get job opportunity information out to students
  • Collaborate with you on “niche” job fairs focused on your major (both in-person and virtual)
  • Help promote events and jobs that might interest your students

Please reach out to her about how she might work with you on events or projects.

As we move into the spring of 2023 – we appreciate partnering to help our students!
