FOR USE by Counselors:

Public Health Sciences/Health Education Program Updates

I wanted to inform you that as of Tuesday November 24 MHEC approved the new AS in Public Health Sciences.  The number is 415.  This program accompanies the existing articulation with USG.  As of Spring 2016 no student will be admitted into the public health science program at Shady Grove unless they have completed the BS in public health sciences  here at MC.  USG will be working with students previously admitted under other majors to help them complete the program.

In addition there have been some changes to the existing health education program (186).  Chemistry has been dropped as a requirement (since College Park has done the same) and an additional health elective has been substituted.  This has adjusted the program to 60 credits.  This program transfers well to College Park’s Community Health major which has a behavioral health focus unlike the public health program which has a biological health focus.  In addition, there was a mistake in the catalog, students need to make sure that 2 of their chosen electives are at the 200 level (the catalog reads 1).  I have alerted the curriculum committee regarding the error.  Since there are other details in each program  which may impact the student’s choice of electives it is probably best if you send them to me for advising.  Thank you.  Edwards, Maureen

Reading Course Completion Options

(starting fall 2015 for spring 2016 and beyond)

As you may be aware, the developmental reading discipline faculty members have been examining their course sequence. At the end of the spring semester, the reading faculty proposed that there be one common final exam for students in READ 095 and READ 099. The common exam will allow students the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the reading skills necessary to advance to College-level in one semester, saving time and cost to completion. The discipline presented a proposal to make this change to CAPDI at its June meeting. CAPDI approved the proposal. The measure becomes effective fall 2015.

Specifically, that means the following for developmental reading students’ course completions:

Students who earn an “A” or “B” grade in READ 095 move into EN101/A.
Students who earn a “C” grade in READ 095 move to READ 099.
Students who earn an “A”, “B” or “C” grade in READ 099 move into EN 101/A..
Students who earn a “C” grade in READ 099 are strongly encouraged to take READ 120.
Students who earn an “F” grade in either course repeat that course.
The reading faculty members are sharing this information with students enrolled in their classes as part of the next course placement conversations they have with students.

Please share this information with the counseling faculty and the cadre members.

Thanks in advance for your continued support.

UMD - Transfer Notes (fall 2015)

1)      Current applicants for Transfer Admission for Fall 2015 seem to be receiving decisions now if they did not get a decision back in April.  Students may APPEAL a denial decision if they have new information to add to their file.  For example, some students may not have sent in a Final MC Spring Transcript showing completion of courses and credits – if this is the case, an appeal might be appropriate; however, the student should not hold their breath as most transfer seats are already filled.  Students can contact UM Admissions to ask for an Appeals Form.  Not many are granted; the student may just need to reapply for Spring and pay another application fee.  One student’s appeal was denied for “lack of a compelling reason” so the appeals statement MUST be compelling!
2)      UM’s next Transfer Application Priority Deadline is Saturday, August 1st.  Any student hoping to transfer for admission in Spring 2015 should apply to UM by this deadline.  We have sent students messages about this deadline through MyMC e-mail, and another reminder goes out today.  ALL materials must be submitted and RECEIVED by this deadline – scores such as SAT / AP / CLEP if applicable, and transcripts from ANY other institutions attended, including international institutions.  Requests for MC Transcripts must be send by Wed. of next week to assure processing.  Simply requesting the MC transcript by Aug. 1 is not sufficient.   Materials received after August 1st cause an application to go into the Regular rather than Priority group – students receive decisions in very late December to Mid-January – ditto for MTAP students who are finishing up requirements shown below in #6 – this means a late acceptance, a very late Orientation, and a last-minute Spring Schedule at UM for Spring.  80% of all Transfer Admits are granted to Priority Deadline applicants, so a later application by the Nov. 1st Regular Deadline is very risky.
3)      A rule of thumb is that if a course with a “CR” appears on the MC Transcript, it must be accounted for – AP, IB, CLEP, Military Credit, or MC-MCPS High School Credit.   Official copies of AP/IB scores must requested by the student to be sent to UM.   One student’s application was considered late because he had not included a Military Transcript for the HLTH 100,  PHED 888 and MGMT 101 credit he received on his MC Transcript.  This is a bit fuzzy because the UM transcript does not ask for military transcripts – but send them!   Ditto for credits granted by MC for MCPS classes in NWIT, CMAP, etc – for those, an explanation of credit should be included in the Essay so UMCP can see where they came from even though there is not a transcript for those credits.   The details regarding the application can be found in this Transfer Times article:  http://mctransfertimes.blogspot.com/2015/07/applying-to-umcp-for-spring-2016.html
4)      Recommendations for the UMCP Transfer Application – these are OPTIONAL for transfer students in all majors, both LEP and Non-LEP, except BMGT – BUSINESS which DOES require 2 Recommendations.  Students who say that a Counselor and an Instructor Recommendation are required are probably filling out the FRESHMAN form instead of the TRANSFER form within the APPLY website – have them check this.

5)      Students who apply by August 1st with a completed application will hear a decision in mid-October.  Students need to be pro-active if they feel they sent everything in on-time but do not hear anything in October.  Same is true for current students who have not hear a decision on their Fall 2015 applications yet - UMCP does not send out messages to explain that an application was considered late.  Students should call UMCP Admissions to find out what’s going on if they are still waiting to hear from UM for Fall 2015, and they should call in late October if they applied by the Priority Deadline of August 1st.
6)      MTAP Guarantee of Admission – This is offered ONLY if the student applies by a Priority Deadline.  Students who have all MTAP requirements showing on their transcripts as COMPLETED will get a decision in October.  Those with one or more criteria in progress ( 3.0 overall GPA, finishing up 30 credits in Fall 2015, or completing one or both of ENGL 102/103 and/or MATH 110 or higher) will have their applications reviewed in mid-January AFTER the student sends an official copy of their transcript in early January once all Fall Grades are posted.  They can count on admission if they meet all of the qualifications showing on their late December/early January transcript showing Fall grades posted – but it is a RISK to sign a lease on an apartment until the final admissions decision has been offered and accepted.  With a January Admissions decision, students will not go to Orientation & register until late January and sometimes on the first day of classes @ UM.  Caution students in this situation to plan for a Spring MC schedule as well just in case…
7)      TAKING A COURSE THROUGH MTAP THIS FALL:  Some students are confused and think that they MUST take a course through MTAP to be in the Guaranteed Admission Program.  Not so.  This is primarily a benefit for students in majors where there are not equivalent courses for specialized majors offered at MC; for example, Animal Science or Computer Science.
8)      COMPUTER SCIENCE TRANSFER STUDENTS & MTAP FORMS  Many COMPUTER SCIENCE transfer students want to take CMSC 131 at UMCP because of the current lack of transferability of MC’s CMSC 203 Computer Science I.  MC is working on this issue – but for now, if a student wants to take CMSC 131 at UM, MC counselors need to sign the CIS Form at the bottom to verify that the student has taken or will be taking MATH 181 Calculus I and is in good standing at MC – a 2.0 overall GPA or higher.  A 3.0 is not required – however, caution students please if they have less than a 3.0 as CMSC is extremely difficult from all reports.
9)      MTAP DEPARTMENT PERMISSION on the Bottom of the CIS Form is given AFTER the student submits the CIS Form – MTAP Coordinator Hollin Roberts ( hrobert1@umd.edu ) contacts the student AFTER the CIS Form has been submitted and she gives the student directions on how to get UMCP Departmental Permission if it is required.  Encourage students to submit their CIS forms as a scanned attachment to Ms. Roberts.  MC has already sent a transcript for all MTAP students so this is not a requirement for the student to submit the CIS.
10)   The Next Open Enrollment for MTAP will be from Sept. 20 to Nov. 1st – this will become a live link in the UMCP Apply Application website.  New freshmen will be encouraged to enroll in MTAP in September.

Hope this helps!  I check e-mail frequently, feel free to send questions or have students e-mail me directly -

Anne Schleicher

MTAP - Fall 2015 Updates

If your goal is to transfer to UMCP in FALL 2016 or after, you should enroll in MTAP NOW, between Sept. 20th and Nov. 15th.  The MTAP application is located online - please read further in this message for details:

The Maryland Transfer Advantage Program has two major benefits:
·         Guaranteed Admission to UMCP after completion of 60 credits or at least 30 credits and/or
·         The ability to take one class at UM while a full-time student at Montgomery College (this is OPTIONAL and is typically used by students who cannot find a course needed for their major at MC, for example, Computer Science or Animal Sciences).
The MTAP Guarantee of Admission to UM:
For completion of the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program you must:

·         Enroll in MTAP at least one full semester prior to the semester that you will apply for Transfer Admission.  You can apply to MTAP even if you have not earned any credits at MC yet.
·         You will need to complete at least 15 credits at Montgomery College after you have graduated from high school (MC credits while your were in high school do not count toward the minimum 15 credits required).
·         Students need to earn an associate’s degree or at least 30 credits.  Among the minimum 30 credits, you must complete freshman English (ENGL 102 or ENGL 103) and a college-level math course (MATH 110 or higher, depends on major) and 5 general education courses.
·         Achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 from all previously attended institutions in order to receive the admission benefits of the MTAP program.  All previous colleges and universities attended must be reported when you apply to MTAP.
·         Submit an Application for Transfer Admission by the Transfer Priority Deadline of March 1 for Fall 2016 or August 1 for Spring 2017 admission. On the transfer application, please indicate your participation in MTAP.
·         MTAP does not guarantee you admission to Limited Enrollment majors - see below.
About Limited Enrollment Programs - MTAP does not guarantee admission to Limited Enrollment Programs which have additional competitive requirements: www.lep.umd.edu:  Architecture;  Business; Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry,  Environmental Sciences and Policy-Biodiversity & Conservation;  Communication;  Criminology & Criminal Justice; Engineering;  Government & Politics;  Journalism;  Landscape Architecture;  Psychology  However, some LEP decisions are made after a student has applied, ALL MC STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY FOR MTAP, regardless of major (LEP or not).

To Take a Course at UM While Enrolled at Montgomery College – this is an OPTIONAL benefit of MTAP; taking a course at UMCP is not a requirement to participate in MTAP.

To take a course,
1) Apply for MTAP
2) Be able to show that you have earned 15 or more credits at Montgomery College
3) Fill out the CIS (Course Interest Survey) form that will be sent to you when you are accepted into MTAP.

MTAP's Next Enrollment Period is Sept. 20th through November 15th - you must apply on-line through the MTAP Site, using the on-line form.

Question:
I'm in MTAP - the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program - am I guaranteed admission to UM for Fall 2016 if I still have courses in progress this coming Spring 2016 when I apply?  Here are my specific details:  I am enrolling in MTAP in  Sept. 2015 and I am earning 14 credits this Fall 2015.  I will earn 16 more credits in Spring 2016, including ENGL 102 and MATH 110 (college-level English and Math).  I will apply for transfer admission by March 1, the Priority Deadline for Fall 2016 transfer.  My transcript this Spring 2015 will indicate that Fall 2015 courses are finished and Spring '16 courses are in progress - am I guaranteed under MTAP upon final review of the transcript once the semester is completed at the end of May?  This assumes I will meet all MTAP qualifications with my end of May 2016 transcript – 30 credits, college-level ENGL and MATH, and a 3.0 overall GPA.

Answer:  In the past, applications from MTAP students who applied by the March 1 Priority Deadline with courses in progress were reviewed for admission at the end of May after the student sent a final MC transcript with Spring semester grades, showing that completion of ALL of the MTAP qualifications.   We assume that this will also be the procedure for MTAP students applying for Fall 2016.  Additional questions should be addressed to the MTAP Program at UMCP.

Completing the Common Application

MC ADVICE FOR THE COMMON APPLICATION Transfer Students:  Common Application (CA4) Directions

What is the Common Application (CA4)?
The Common Application (CA4) is an on-line college admission application that students may submit to over 500 member schools. Go to the website to see which institutions require the Common Application. Please note that Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari is needed to properly download and submit the CA4. Transfer students must submit the CA4 application electronically. Transfer students will only be able to download and print the following two forms:

1.    “Transfer Registrar Report” (where the Dean/Associate Dean will complete the College Official’s information)
2.    “Transfer Academic Evaluation Form” (for letters of recommendation).
These two forms will be populated with the student’s name once they set-up their CA4 application profile.  Students can also choose to have the Transfer Academic Evaluation Form sent electronically to Instructors for the recommendation.

Transfer students need to fill out or provide information for the following forms:
1.    www.commonapp.org Follow all the directions through submission for the “Transfer Application Package”.
2.    Transfer Academic Evaluation Form:  Print the PDF of an evaluation form and give it to your evaluator, preferably with an addressed, stamped envelope or electronically send it to an evaluator.  You may want to share your resume with the evaluator writing the recommendation.
3.    Transfer Registrar Report: This form can be downloaded (with the student information populated  on it) and brought to the Associate Dean’s Office to be completed. This form “DOES NOT” go to the Registrar or the Admissions Office. It should be taken to the Dean of Student Services' office on your MC campus.
4.    Final Report: This is generally not necessary for a transfer student, as it refers to high school work. However, check the “Supplement Page” of the four year institution to ascertain if they want the student’s high school transcript and standardized test scores.
5.    Essays: Some schools require additional essays, portfolios, and/or an interest statement. Check the “Supplement Page” of the CA4 for each college for additional information the student has to provide.

Architecture Update (Fall 2015)

There are more transfer options than ever before for our Architecture graduates.  We have at last achieved an agreement with UMCP SOAP for our grads who successfully complete their AAS at MC and are accepted to UMCP.  Plus, we have existing articulation with Morgan SOAP and successful relationships with CUA SOAP, Philadelphia University SOAP, IIT SOA in Chicago, Boston Architecture Center, Florida Atlantic University, and many more schools of architecture....

in order to treansfef form MC Architecture, one needs to complete their AAS at MC in Architecture.  I have been very active in founding an organization called the Coalition of Community College Architecture Programs and this is a very important aspect of our coalition and efforts.

BIOL 150 Prereq Change (Fall 2015 -->)

MATH093/096 is now a PREREQUISITE for BIOL150/L and BIOL151/L(it is no longer an assessment level requirement)

PREREQUISITE(S): MATH 093/MATH 096 or college-level math assessment. Assessment Level(s): ENGL 101/ENGL 101A, READ 120. Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory each week. Formerly BI 107.
  • Please note that concurrent enrollment in MATH115A or MATH117A does not meet the prerequisite requirement to enroll in BIOL150/L and BIOL151/L.
    • We have had a few students requesting to take BIOL150/L while enrolled in MATH115A or MATH117A, stating that they are technically college level courses.
    • I have been in discussion with Jim Sniezek, Nelson Bennett and Milton Nash regarding this. Dean Sniezek ran it by the STEM AULT team and this is what they’ve decided:
    •  “I did run this by the STEM AULT team and each math chair agreed that both  MATH 115A and MATH 117A do not meet the spirit of the math prerequisite requirement for BIOL 150.  Even though these MATH courses have a 100+ number, 1/3 of the course is developmental.  As such, I recommend that these courses NOT serve as satisfying the prerequisite requirement for BIOL 150. Jim”
  • Counseling Faculty are permitted to enter prerequisite overrides to previously matriculated students (students that were admitted to the College prior to Fall 2015)
  • “Grandfathered” students should be advised that an exception to the revised prerequisite is being given and that they should contact their instructor immediately should they experience problems
  •  New students  entering in Fall 15 should be held to the revised prerequisite level for BIOL 150

MATH 080: Mathematics Prep

Who is this course for?
Students who need a review of the fundamentals of arithmetic, a thorough introduction to signed numbers, and a presentation of the basic concepts of algebra.  Placement into this course is based on the Math Accuplacer score (AALG).

How is this course organized?
The course is organized into two parts: Part I consists of 6 tests and Part II consists of 6 tests.  A student can place into the beginning of Part I if they score less than 44 on the Accuplacer. A score of 44 or greater but less than 62 places the student in the beginning of Part II.  A student placing into Part I is expected to finish MATH 080 in 2 semesters (1 semester per part).  A student placing into Part II is expected to finish MATH 080 in 1 semester.
Students can improve their placement once enrolled in the course by taking a pre-test before beginning a unit (with the exception of the 6th and 12th units).  A score of 80% or better on the pre-test allows the student to skip the entire unit and the test that follows it.

What topics are covered?
Topics include proportion and percent, polynomials, factoring, linear equations and inequalities in one variable including systems, graphing, integer exponents and quadratic equations.  Applications are included throughout the course.

How does the course work?
This course is self-paced and has no lecture component.  The course is completed through independent computer use:  students can watch lectures, power point presentations, or read an eBook on the computer to learn the material.  Assignments and tests are completed through a software package.

Students are required to attend a 75 minute class period each week (in which they will work individually on computers) and in addition must work in the MATH 080 computer lab for at least 150 minutes per week.  Students can work in the lab any time the lab is open. Attendance accounts for 15% of a student’s final grade in the course and this is determined on the basis of the attendance points they earn over the course of the semester - up to 3 attendance points per week, 1 for class and 1 for each 75 minutes of lab time completed.

Homework assignments must be completed with 100% correctness in order to be able to advance to the next section.  All tests other than the final exam must be completed with 80% or better in order to advance.  The final exam must be completed with a 70% or better in order to pass the course.  Students are allowed to retake exams (even the final exam) as many times as necessary to achieve the desired mastery level. If a student fails the same test 3 times then an intervention is made in order to diagnose the student’s specific difficulties and make it more likely the student will be successful on a 4th test attempt.

How many times can a student take the course?
A student is allowed 4 attempts at MATH 080.  A continuing MATH 080 student (for example, a student in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th semester of MATH 080) will start the semester in the section immediately following the last test passed in the previous semester.

How does a student pass the course?
A student beginning in Part I will receive a passing grade of H if he/she completes 6 tests in a semester.  A student beginning in Part 2 will receive a passing grade of A, B, or C if he/she completes the final exam with 70% or better by the end of the semester.  A student’s final grade in the course depends on his/her test scores for the last 6 tests in the course. Note: A student with an H grade must register for MATH 080 again in order to complete the remaining coursework.

What are some benefits of this course?

Students are able to engage the material at a pace that is most suited to their individual needs. In addition there are a number of resources – both online and in the MATH 080 Lab – available for students who need extra help. Lastly students are encouraged to complete the course at a faster pace if they are able. Students who complete MATH 080 before the end of a semester can continue in a self-paced Intermediate Algebra (MATH 093 or 096) for no additional tuition. This way it is possible to complete all developmental math course work in a single semester. Note: If a student completes MATH 093/096 in the same semester that information can only be found in Banner Comments – the grade assigned for the semester will only be for MATH 080.

Pre-Transfer Advising at UMD July 2015 Updates

Pre-Transfer Advising has a new website that addresses many of the questions we field from prospective students.  The new URL is pretransferadvising.umd.edu (The old address will redirect to the new website).  The new email address is pretransferadvising@umd.edu but emails sent to the former (transferadvising@umd.edu) will be redirected.

As many of you know, Megan Forbes Cleaver will be out on maternity leave this summer and will return mid-Fall.   During this time, walk-ins and advising appointments will be on a limited basis.  Please review our website to see the most up-to-date schedule and encourage students to do so as well. The best way for students to receive assistance during this time will be through email to pretransferadvising@umd.edu.   Leah will be out of the office July 10 – July 26, and students will receive a detailed auto-reply that will provide them assistance in the meantime.

During this time, if you are unable to reach anyone, please contact Assistant Dean Lisa Kiely at Lkiely@umd.edu and 301-314-9962.

Thank you for your support.

Math Course Guidelines (Fall 2015 Update)

Overrides:

1. Will not be given for test scores that fall more than 1 point below a cut-off score.
2. If a student’s math placement checks out (for MATH 110 or higher) but they are in AELP, it is not necessary to consult the math department if the student is also eligible to take both AELW 940 and AELR 930.
3.       If a student is seeking enrollment in MATH 181, it is not necessary to consult the math department if the student’s AMAT score is 87+ or their SAT Math score is 650+
a.       Working on identifying an ACT score for MATH 181 placement

·          If a MATH 080 student has completed 093 or 096 in the same semester, that information can only be found in the Banner Advising Comments. Any letter grade given for MATH 080 is for that course only. An H grade signifies that the student has completed only a part of the course (at least Half) and must register for MATH 080 again in order to complete the remaining coursework.
·      If a student has taken MATH 115A or 117A and then wishes to take MATH 165 we generally recommend the student first take MATH 096. 115A and 117A are terminal courses and not intended to prepare students for subsequent algebra intensive coursework.

·          Accelerated pathways:

1.       The Alternate Placement Pilot aimed at incoming recent MCPS graduates – Eligible students have the opportunity to take a college math class (MATH 110 or 117) without developmental math coursework. Please consult with student to make sure this option works for the student’s program.

2.       Beginning and advanced Fast Track classes offered in winter and summer sessions. These classes give current students an opportunity to improve their math placement. Eligible students can potentially place into 093, 096, 110, 115, 117, or 150. Placement is only good for the following semester.

3.       MATH115/117A
a.       These courses are combination courses of MATH093 and the corresponding college level courses.  Grades for MATH115A/117A and MATH115/117 are linked and these courses are transferable as the comparable college level class.
b.      There is an Algebra Competency Test as part of these classes.  This test must be passed in order to pass the class.  Students who do not pass will be given options for how to complete MATH093 in the same semester.  These options may include self-paced classes and late-start classes.
c.       Students who pass the competency test but not the course for MATH115A/117A will be allowed to sign up for MATH115/117.
d.      Please consider carefully whether the fast pace of MATH115A/117A is appropriate for a student.  Students who have needed more than 2 attempts to pass MATH080 are not good candidates.
e.      After successful completion of MATH115A/117A, students are allowed to take any class for which MATH093 is a prerequisite.
f.        Taking MATH115A or 117A is like taking two classes so please take that in to consideration.  If a student was planning on taking 4 classes and this is one of them, then take 3!  It counts as 5 billing hours and 3 credit hours.

g.       Generally speaking, the MATH093 content takes up the first 1/3 of the semester and the college content the last 2/3.
