Subject: Community Health

Hi Dana,

I just got this video from UMD BS in Community Health, which is where most of our students transfer to after graduation.  It's very short, but I get so many questions about our Community Health program that I felt the video provides general information about the career field.  Since the pandemic, I've received more student inquiries about our program, so I hope to do a video with our students once we can do face to face

If you think this helps, or if you want me to send it out to others, please let me know.

Take care,

Dianne

UMD - Walk-In Hours in Admissions

Maryland has walk in hours in admissions every day from eleven am to four pm.  Remember if students would like advising instead of needing questions answered about admissions they can also contact the pre transfer advisors at Maryland.

Here is the link to the Pre Transfer Advising webpage and the link to UM Admissions.

Foreign Credit and Admissionand International Admissions Contact at UM

UM is still doing their own evaluation of foreign credit.  So students applying to UM would need to forward them an official academic transcript from the student’s sending international institution in addition to the English translation of the work at the time of application.

Mrs. Tamarie Tomaski,  is now the Assistant Director of International Admissions and can answer questions regarding international admissions.

Two New Math Courses - MATH 170 & MATH 171

*MATH 170 Calculus I for Life Sciences
     -begins Fall 2015
-is at the same level as MATH 181 Calculus I with the same prerequisites
-is primarily for life science majors
-this is MATH 181 with life science applications
-after completing this course, students may take MATH 171 Calculus II for Life Sciences (see below) or MATH 182 Calculus II

*MATH 171 Calculus II for Life Sciences
     -begins Spring 2016
-has a prerequisite of MATH 170 or 181
     -this is NOT MATH 182
     -this is NOT a prerequisite for 280, 282, 284 like 182

You will receive the new math flowchart soon!

Transfer Info:

*UMCP,  equivalent to MATH 130 Calculus I for the Life Sciences and MATH 131 Calculus II for the Life Sciences *Salisbury University, MATH 198 Calculus for Biology and Medicine

Course Descriptions:

*MATH 170 Calculus for Life Sciences I

Intended primarily for students of the life sciences.  An introduction to the major ideas of single variable calculus including limits, derivatives, and integrals of algebraic and transcendental functions; applications to the life sciences.  Credit may not be earned in both MATH 170 and MATH 181.  Not intended for students of the physical sciences, engineering, or mathematics.  PREREQUISITE:  A grade of C or better in MATH 165, appropriate score on mathematics assessment test, or consent of department.  For computation of tuition, this course is equivalent to five semester hours.  Five hours each week.  4 semester hours

MATH 171 Calculus for Life Sciences II

A continuation of MATH 170; intended primarily for students of the life sciences.  Topics include: integration, partial derivatives, systems of linear equations, normal and binomial distributions, sampling distributions, an introduction to differential equations, and discrete dynamical systems. Alongside the mathematical concepts will be applications to the life sciences. Not intended for students of the physical sciences, engineering, or mathematics.   PREREQUISITE:  A grade of C or better in MATH 170 or MATH 181.  Assessment levels: ENGL 101/101A, READ 120.  For computation of tuition, this course is equivalent to five semester hours.  Five hours each week.  4 semester hours.  NOTE: MATH 171 is NOT a substitute for MATH 182 (Calculus II).

Additional information:

If someone takes MATH171 and then wanted to take a higher class they should talk with the Math department.  They modeled this after College Park which has the same policy.  As for transferability it should have direct transferability to College park as MATH140 and MATH141 respectively.  Most other schools do not have this class yet. Also, the course was designed to match the calculus for life science (MA 130)  majors at College Park and for a proposed 2 + 2 agreement between UMBC and Germantown MC Biotech degree.  ARTSYS shows other schools as to be determined.

Counselor Recommendation Forms for Students Transferring to UM

Transfer applicants: Please note that you are strongly encouraged to submit a letter of recommendation. If you wish to do so, you may use this form and place the name of your current institution in the "High School Name" field.

So in summary, students may be requesting you to complete a counselor recommendation form for UM.  The student should place “Montgomery College” in the “High School Name” field also as the counselor you need only provide information that is relevant to the transfer applicant.  Please remember the letters of recommendation are not required but is an option for students who would like to provide them. I will pass along any further information or details regarding this development.

UMD - Biology Intent Students

Update provided by Andrea Milo on July 8, 2014

UMD-Biology intent students:

1) Beginning fall 2014 MC students planning to major in biology and transfer to UMD should take PHYS233/234 Physics for the Life Sciences, which will transfer as UMD's PHYS131/132 Physics for Biologists requirement.
2) If a student transfers to UMD prior to taking PHYS233/234 they will be permitted to use their MATH181 Calculus I as the calc pre-requisites for UMD's Physics for Biologists I (since MC does not currently offer a Calculus for Biologists course)
3) Student who took PH203 and PH204 prior to the fall 2014 semester will be able to apply this toward UMD's physics for biologists requirement and will not have to take PHYS131/132 upon transfer.
4) GT and TP MC students who might not have access to PHYS233/234 or who might not have been aware of this change can still take and transfer PHYS203 and PHYS204 through this academic year only (14-15).

5) UMD plans to continue to accept our Calc I and II (MATH181/182) for their biology majors. Students planning to major in sciences should NEVER take MATH150/151 (formerly MA160/161)

Smith Business Advising Summer '14

Hello, Everyone -

It's Summer, the time when students start worrying about getting into the Smith School - wait, no, that's a year-round concern here at MC!

Here are a few UMCP Smith Business School Updates -

1)     Two courses have been removed from the GATEWAY course list for Smith:  Both ENGL 102/103 (aka EN 102/109) and MATH 150 (MA 160) are NO LONGER considered GATEWAY courses.   They are still required, but students who have a repeat of one or both of these courses are no longer violating the "only one repeat of a Gateway course." Find the Updated Smith Advising Page here:   http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/EDU/Plain.aspx?id=10187   P.S., this also applies to other LEP’s, but that’s another e-mail.

2)     The unofficially observed "lowest GPA" of admitted students to Smith AT THE MAIN CAMPUS for this coming Fall 2014 seems to be a 3.5.  Students need to be prepared with a Plan B if they want Smith @ the Main Campus  but do not have a 3.5 overall GPA.

3)     Smith/Shady Grove still shows flexibility when considering students - there seems to be some leeway in terms of GPA (but a 3.0 overall is a MUST), repeated Gateways, etc.  When in doubt, refer the student directly to Shady Grove - have them call 301-738-6023 for advising.

4)     Recent questions from students:

-          Do I have to take MG 201 / BSAD 201 Business Law as shown in the MC Business Degree?  No!  While it DOES transfer as a general elective, it is NOT required by the MC Business AA degree -ANY elective can go in this spot, as shown on the Advising Sheet where it says "MG 201 or Elective" .  Students must take Business Law as a junior at Smith - so taking a duplicate course is not necessary.  Any elective will work.

-          Can any Arts or Humanities courses be taken for Smith, or must one be a History or Literature?  For students who started at MC in Fall 2012 and after, any Arts or Humanities will work.  For students who started at MC prior to Fall 2012, students need one HistoryOR an EN Literature, but not both.  Recently a student said she was told that UM would not consider KR 101 Elementary Korean as a Humanities – but KR 101 works, as will any course on the MC Gen Ed Arts or Humanities list!

-          Can MA 180/MATH 165 Precalculus be substituted for MATH150/MA160 Elementary Applied Calc?  No - sorry!  Students must take Applied Calc OR regular Calculus, MATH/MA181 - either of these two will work.

-          Is Smith Shady Grove adding Information Systems in the near future?  No additions to USG on the horizon as of now - the Shady Grove Smith Majors are General Management, Marketing, Accounting, and International Business.

For the Did You Know? File

1)     MC has deleted the International Business curriculum as of Fall 2013 - so be sure to check a student's starting date if they are interested in this curriculum.
2)     UMCP now has a Business Analytics Minor!  What is Business Analytics? Read here to find out – this minor has the potential to add a Business edge to students who might not make it into Smith, but who still want the Smith exposure.   http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/programs/undergraduate-programs/academics/academic-minors/business-analytics

UMD LEP Changes

Effective immediately, LEP majors at UMD no longer include completion of fundamental studies English and math and distributive studies as part of the LEP gateway requirements.   The one exception to this new policy is Journalism, where fundamental English and math continue to be gateway requirements.

You can view the updated LEP requirements at www.lep.umd.edu.

Please let me know if you have questions, and feel free to share this with others who may work with prospective transfer students.

Take care,
Megan

UMD - Transfer Credit Center

Happy New Year from Transfer Credit Services at the University of Maryland!

I am writing to announce a recent change involving the Transfer Credit Center at the University of Maryland.

The Transfer Credit Center has changed its name!  The Transfer Credit Center is now Transfer Credit Services.  The name change was made to more accurately reflect our role and mission working with transfer students and the evaluation of their credits.  Along with this name change, we have established a new email address (transfercredit@umd.edu) for advisors or prospective students to reach us with questions.  The old email will still work for now but it will eventually go away.  So please begin utilizing the new email address when referring students to contact us.

We also have a new URL to go along with our new name, www.transfercredit.umd.edu, and are in the process of developing a new website.  Our existing webpages will continue to work for now, but we encourage you to start using the new URL.  Should you have any documentation or websites that direct students to our old URL, please update your materials and sites to direct students to our new URL.

If you have any questions about our exciting changes, please just let me know.

MTAP Updates Sept. 2013

The online application form for MTAP, the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program, is now available on the UMCP website: www.admissions.umd.edu/requirements/MarylandTransferAdvantageProgram.php

Students may enroll in MTAP between now (September) up to the deadline of this Nov. 15, 2013.  Any student who applies now may participate in MTAP benefits this coming Spring 2014 and beyond.

Who should NOT apply?  Any student who has applied or who plans apply to transfer to UMCP this Spring 2014 is not eligible to join MTAP - MTAP is not open to students who want to transfer to UM in the following semester.  Students who plan to apply to transfer to UM in Fall 2014 SHOULD apply to MTAP now!

When will students hear of their enrollment in MTAP?  MTAP applications will be processed after the Nov. 15th deadline.  Students will hear of their acceptance 6 - 8 weeks after Nov. 15th (very late Dec/January).  If you are working with a student who wants to take a course at UM this coming Spring 2014, please inform one of us (Anne, Joan or Jeri) so that we can alert UM and ask them to process the student's application earlier.   Taking a course is open only to students who have completed 12 or more credits at MC prior to Spring 2014.

Who is a good candidate to take a course at UM?  Typically, students who are in majors where enrollment at UM is necessary to stay on track - Landscape Arch, Architecture, Animal Science, Computer Science, some types of Engineering, Journalism, etc.  A key tip-off is when the ARTSYS RTP shows courses with asterisks *ANSC 110, *CMSC 131 etc, indicating that no equivalent course is available at Montgomery College.

Do students have to reapply to stay in MTAP?  No - once a student has received a "Welcome to MTAP" e-mail, they are considered to be in the program until the actually transfer to UM.  Students who are in MTAP receive special consideration of their transfer applications only if they apply by the Priority Deadline for transfer, either March 1st for Fall or August 1 for Spring.

Who should apply to MTAP?  ANY student who is considering UM as an option in the future should enroll in MTAP.  MTAP does not commit a student to attend UM, but it keeps the door open for a possible admission later on.

Does MTAP guarantee admission to LEP's?  No - however, we recommend that all students in all majors apply to MTAP to cover guaranteed admission if students change their minds about majors.

What is the MTAP Guarantee of Admission?  Students who complete 30 or more transferable credits which must include EN 102/109 and a College-level math, along with a 3.0 overall GPA, are guaranteed admission to Non-LEP majors, but they MUST apply by the Priority Deadline of either August 1 for Spring or March 1 for Fall.  See LEP majors here:  www.lep.umd.edu

What if a student doesn't have all 30 credits finished at the time they apply to transfer by March 1 for Fall 2014?  This is the case for current freshmen who are in their first semester at MC this Fall 2013.  If they enroll in MTAP for Spring, they will indicate that they are in MTAP on their Transfer Applications for Fall 2014, and UM will hold their applications for a final review in late May, with notification of admission coming in late June/early July after Spring grades have been received and reviewed.  Students who don't have 30 credits showing as completed on their transcripts at the Priority Deadline March 1 for Fall or August 1 for Spring will still have to send SAT and high school transcripts to UM to make their applications complete, but the decision to admit will be based on MC grades.

Are MTAP students better off transferring prior to completion of 60 credits at MC?  Not at all.  Although they may apply and transfer @ 30 credits, many students in competitive majors like Business or Engineering find it to their benefit to get great grades in 60 credits at MC.  UMCP does not give preference to students who have transferred earlier for competitive majors - competitive admission into LEP majors is based mainly on excellent grades, and smaller classes at MC are usually a good place to get the best grades possible.  The other advantage of staying longer at MC is that students will have met 34 credits of General Education requirements if they fulfill our Gen Ed Program (taking a 3-credit Health) - this means that they will only need to take 2 more Gen Ed courses after transfer, an upper level ENGL writing course and one other Gen Ed at UM.

What about Shady Grove?  UM offers a similar Guaranteed Admission Program to Shady Grove students - Terp Transfer Program (TTP).  Majors in TTP are Biological Sciences, Communication, and Criminal Justice, soon to be joined by Business.  Refer prospective TTP students to Justin Edgar, jedgar@umd.edu - he is also on MC Rockville & Germantown campuses weekly.   TTP Information:   http://shadygrove.umd.edu/prospective-students/transfer-access-programs/usg-ttp   Students may apply to both MTAP and TTP.

What if a student doesn't meet that exact 3.0 GPA?   UMCP continues to honor the Maryland State transfer agreement that says that a student who has earned an AA or AS degree with a 2.0 or higher "will not be denied admission to a Maryland public institution."  UM accepts AA/AS degree holders into non-LEP majors on the condition that the Associate's degree must be stamped as completed on the transcript by one of the two priority transfer application deadlines, either August 1 - Spring or March 1 - Fall.

How will students be informed that MTAP is now accepting applications?  We are sending out e-mails to students in MyMC, and we hope that you will also let them know about MTAP!

Final Bonus Question:  What are the two UMCP Priority Transfer Applications Deadlines by which applications must be completed in order to qualify for both MTAP and the Guarantee of Admission based on completion of an AA/AS degree?  If you answered "August 1 for Spring or March 1 for Fall", then you no longer need to Fear the Turtle!  And yes, UM continues to accept Spring applications until Nov. 15 and Fall applications until June 1, but space availability is limited and the MTAP/AA degree basis of acceptance is not assured for students who apply after the Priority Transfer Application Deadlines.

USG UMCP Biological Science Program - Fall 2013

Please review the changes below to the UMCP USG Biological Sciences Program.  The changes include:

  1. Changing the “area of emphasis” within the major of Biological Sciences from General Biology to Physiology and Neurobiology. This does not affect the requirements to enter the program.
  2.  Determined that it is in the students’ best interest to only admit students to the program in the fall semesters. There will be no more spring admission to the BioSci program at USG.
Changes to the UMCP Biological Sciences Program:

We are changing the “area of emphasis” within the major from General Biology to Physiology and Neurobiology to better meet current students’ future goals and hopefully attract more students to the program at USG.

Within the Biological Sciences Program (the “major”) on main campus there are different “areas of emphasis” (Cell Biology, Microbiology, Ecology and Evolution, etc.).  Main campus students can choose which area of emphasis they would like to pursue, and it affects which upper level science courses they are required to take and which upper level science courses they can choose to take and have count towards the “area” requirements. Here at USG we are too small to offer the many courses it would take to allow students to choose different areas of emphasis; we only have one. When the program was first conceived, it was decided that offering the General Biology specialization (GENB) was the best idea to be able to provide a variety of courses and to attract the most students.  It is now clear that most of the students who enroll in the program at USG have the same goals as most of the students in the Biological Sciences Program on main campus: to attend medical, dental, pharmacy, physical therapy or physician assistant school after graduating with their four year degree. Therefore, offering the Physiology and Neurobiology specialization (PHNB) in place of the General Biology specialization is a much better fit for the students’ goals. This in no way changes the requirements to enter the program.

The USG UMCP Biological Science Program will no longer be admitting students in spring semesters.

There is a course taken in the fall of junior year, BSCI 330 Cell Biology, that is a pre-requisite for most other science courses. If students enter the program in the spring, and therefore do not have this pre-req, they have too few science classes they can take that spring semester and therefore too many to take the following spring semester. Only allowing fall admits is best for the students. This only applies to the BioSci program at USG; main campus BioSci will still admit in spring.
