Social Resource Program Update - Spring 2025

Hello MC Community

I am writing to provide an important update regarding the Social Resource Program (SRP), which has been funded through a grant by the Department of Education and operated via the Student Wellness Center. As you may be aware, this program has played a vital role in addressing students' basic needs over the past three years.

Since its inception, the SRP has served over 1,200 students, offering services and programming in areas such as food security, housing, health coverage, medical and mental health care, childcare, and legal support. Through these efforts, we have made a meaningful impact on the lives of our students and have contributed to their overall academic success and well-being.

As the grant funding concludes on December 31, 2024, I am pleased to share that the SRP will continue to operate through the end of the 2024/2025 academic year. This extension ensures that students will still have access to critical support and resources. Referrals for assistance related to basic needs can be made online through STARFISH or by emailing the staff below. SRP coaches will remain available on each campus to provide guidance and support. However, it is important to note that with the conclusion of the grant funding, the program will no longer be able to provide direct emergency funds to students. Despite this change, the SRP will maintain its commitment to connecting students with resources and services that meet their essential needs.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the SRP and our students. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need additional information.

988 Suicide Prevention Hotline

988 suicide prevention hotline launches nationwide

People experiencing a mental health crisis can now call or text a three-digit number, 988, to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and connect with mental health professionals trained to respond to such emergencies.

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline went live on Saturday morning, according to SAMHSA Assistant Secretary Miriam Delphin-Rittmon.

The hotline was designed to provide 24/7 free and confidential emotional support around the country to those in mental health distress, the 988 lifeline website explains.

Morning Rundown

Get a head start with the latest breaking news and must-read articles from NBC News.

The new number connects the caller to a certified crisis center in the area where the call is placed, according to the website. The hotline is made up of a network of 200 local crisis centers around the country.

“When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network,” the website says. “These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.”

The three-digit number is expected to be easier to remember in times of crisis than the 10-digit 800 number currently handled by the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. It is also meant to streamline mental health responses so people can get the urgent help they need much faster than by calling 911, which generally connects callers to law enforcement agencies rather than mental health professionals.

Its launch comes about two years after the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act passed in 2020 to designate 988 as the universal number for the national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline's 10-digit number, 800-273-8255, will continue to remain operational after the launch of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Additional resources will remain available by texting HOME to 741741 or visiting SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources.

Social Resource Program @ SHaW Center

Dear Colleagues,

I hope everyone finds this email in good spirits and joy.

As we continue to move well into Summer Session II, some students might share they are experiencing hardships, whether housing, academic, or medically related. With eviction protections coming to an end, educating students about the availability of resources at the SHaW Center becomes paramount.

The Social Resource Program(SRP) is a new option for students at Montgomery College who are struggling to pay for housing and academic-related expenses. Please kindly encourage students to apply for housing and academic assistance by visiting the Social Resource Program's website.

Eligible students can receive a book voucher, laptop, as well as utility, rental, and medical assistance. We are still accepting requests for Summer Summer II and will begin transitioning into the fall semester after August 16, 2021.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me specific questions at shauntia.white@montgomerycollege.com. For general inquiry, forward emails to the SHaW Center at shawcenter@montgomerycollege.edu.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best,

New Resource: Transgender Hotline

Good morning all,

I hope everyone is doing well.  I saw a post from a friend on LinkedIn about the first transgender suicide hotline – Trans Lifeline.  I went to their webpage and it appears they offer additional support beyond crises.  I could just be late to the party here, some of you may already be aware of Trans Lifeline, but I was thinking this might be a great Counseling and Advising resource to have on the web.
