MTAP - Latest & Greatest
The MTAP folks will no longer accept a hand-written MTAP application.
From this point forward, direct students to the MTAP application online (posted as writable PDF document). Please note students do not submit the application online. They complete a PDF form online, print and hand-carry it to the SV building. It is linked from our the transfer web site and available from UMD’s site at: http://www.uga.umd.edu/admissions/apply/forms.asp#mtap or http://www.uga.umd.edu/sharedmedia/PDF/2011%20App%20Forms/WritableMTAPApplication092011.pdf.
Note: We’ve removed the paper applications from CB215. Please discard any additional copies you see floating around.
The following information clarifies some recent changes to the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program application process.
- Ms. Tiffane Cochran is the contact person at the University of Maryland who assists with the MTAP process. Please feel free to email her at tcochran@umd.edu or call her at 301-314-8391 if you or your students have questions about the program. Laura Albuerme assists with the MTAP application process at MC. Please refer students to her if they have question about their application being received here. She can be reached at 240-567-8017 or by email at laura.albuerme@montgomerycollege.edu.
- It takes two weeks from the time students submit their application for them to get the MTAP welcome email from the University of Maryland.
- The MTAP application now requires students provide a statement as to why they want to participate in MTAP. Students should submit a thoughtful paragraph of why they want to participate in MTAP not just a one sentence answer.
- When completing a “Course Interest Survey” form, you must now include the student's cumulative GPA.
The form can be downloaded from this website and is located near the bottom of the page http://www.admissions.umd.edu/admissions/apply/forms.asp#mtap.
The deadline to submit the “Course Interest Survey” form to the University of Maryland to take a class for the spring semester is January 2nd. The deadline for submitting the form for summer is February 27th and for fall is August 1st. - MC students need to be aware that courses students take at UM will be considered as part of their admission process to the university. Students need to make good decisions regarding taking a course at UM especially if their current overall GPA is around a 2.0 GPA
- MTAP students are welcomed to use the following services at UM.

Health Science Updates
Just a few notable changes/news from the health science programs in TP/SS:
- All of the programs except for Health Info Management (HIM) require the TEAS (HIM is thinking seriously of adding the TEAS in the future…so stay posted!)
- Nursing Application deadlines have changed:
Fall Deadline: April 1
Spring deadline: August 1 - If a student took BI 204 and BI 205 more than 5 years ago, he or she may take BI 218, Pathophysiology (3 sem. Hrs.) rather than take BI204-205 over again. Successful completion of BI 218 will then satisfy the Anatomy and Physiology requirements
- Reminder: Our HE 205 or Continuing Ed. CPR007 will satisfy the CPR certification for “Healthcare Provider” which the student needs after acceptance into a health science program.
UMD Business: Smith Admission Requirements
Please be aware of the admission policy/procedures to the Robert H. Smith School of Business for transfer students . These changes have been made to expedite the admission of academically talented students into the program.
- Student applications will now be reviewed during the semester that students are completing their 60th credit (their last semester at MC).
- Students can be in process of AC202 or either EC 201 or EC 202 for a total of two of the gateway courses the semester they are undergoing the review at 60 credits. (These are the only gateways they can be taking the semester they hit their 60th credit which is the semester before they are transferring). Students who are in the process of other gateway courses such as BA 210 or EN 109 etc. will have to wait until they have completed those courses to go through the admission review process.
- Students can be admitted provisionally to the Smith school at this time but will only be offered final admission after the grades are posted for their last semester here at MC.
- There will be three reviews of the business school applicants March 1st, June 15th and August 1st.
- It is critical that all students interested in the University of Maryland College Park apply by the priority deadlines which are March 1st for fall and August 1st for spring.
- Jesse Bowen is the Limited Enrollment Program Coordinator at the main campus. Luke Glasgow is the contact person at USG.

Academic Suspension
All we have to do is to put a comment in banner that says the student has sat out their semester and that we allow them to take 6 credits as per the regulation. Of course this is all after we have had a nice discussion with them regarding their situation.
The student can either go to AEM (SV Building) to have the limit set so they can register or they can call the response center at 240-567-5000 to do the same.

Involuntary Withdrawal vs. Academic Appeals
We’ve seen an increase in students routed through academic appeals with situations (and supporting documentation!) that meet the criteria for an involuntary withdrawal. Please keep a watch for these students and redirect them to the involuntary withdrawal form, instead of the academic appeals form.
Note: As long as the student has supporting documentation, the involuntary withdrawal form will be reviewed regardless of the amount of time passed. Also, students are not required to withdraw from all of their courses. A written statement from the student and a letter from the doctor explaining why they are not able to attend the course is all AEM needs.
If you or your students have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact: Jamie Patel or Titiana Touma.
A withdrawal is considered involuntary if it results from one of the following situations described in the involunatry withdrawal form (posted under Forms on the Admissions page).

Smith Business School Admissions Decisions Will be Made Earlier Beginning this Fall 2011
Applicants to UMCP’s Robert H. Smith School of Business will receive a provisional admission decision contingent on their final grades during the semester that they apply under a new admissions plan beginning Fall 2011. See details outlined in the new Smith Advising Page, located on the MC Transfer Page: http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/uploadedFiles/EDU/Counseling_and_Advising/Transfer/SmithUMCP.pdf
Highlights of changes to the Admissions Policy:
New: Students will apply to Smith by the deadlines below and hear a provisional decision during the semester of application:
Transfer to UM in Spring 2012: Apply by Oct. 1st (Main Campus only) > Decisions meeting will be held Nov. 1st with notifications sent about a week later.
Transfer to UM in Fall 2012: Apply by March 1st (Main Campus & Shady Grove) > Decisions meeting will be held April 1st with notifications sent about a week later.
Acceptance is contingent upon successful completion of courses in progress which bring the total number of transferable credits to 60 (excluding MA 103 if taken).
New: Students may have only two remaining Gateway courses in progress during the semester of application (AC 202 and EC 202). The Provisional Admission is based on completion of 45 credits (showing on the transcript) at the time of application, with 60 credits completed during the semester of application.
The Smith Advising Page now features a list of Frequently Asked Questions on the second page, for example: Will being part of MTAP help me get admitted to Smith? See the FAQ's for the answer!
Not New but Still Worth Mentioning: As always, it is important to emphasize that spaces at the Main Campus are limited and although the published overall GPA is 3.0, admitted students typically have a higher GPA. Grades in Gateway courses are reviewed carefully; only one repeat (including a "W") of a Gateway course is allowed.
Questions? The New Smith Page should hopefully answer them all.

HIM Advising
It is doubtful that BI 130A/B will be offered in the fall and it is unlikely that students will be allowed to take BI130B by itself.
The HIM program coordinator as advised that students take the courses together even if this means they will have to wait until spring.

Student Athletes & Eligibility
There is no change to the policy/eligibility for EN001, EN002, RD095, RD099, MA094, MA097, and MA099 courses. Those billing hours can be included in the 12 “credit” hours. Example, a student with EN001, RD095, and DS103 would be good to go because he/she would have 12 billing hours/2 credits.
The problems comes in with classes that have a difference in credits and billings hours, like AELP, EN101A, etc. Apparently they can only use the number of credits award to determine eligibility.
As we have discussed previously, this may mean that some AELP students would need 18 semester hours in order to have 12 credit hours to be eligible. Food for thought when working with these students.

SAT/ACT Scores - Submitting to ARR on behalf of students
As a reminder, have the student print out a copy of their SAT or ACT score in front of you. Make sure the score report has their whole name and add their ‘M’ Number. I also sign and stamp it for good measure, so AR knows it’s legit.
ARR will also accept a score report from a student if you sign and stamp.

Summer 2011 Advising Procedures
Triage:
- Quickly assess if the student is in the right place BEFORE they sign in. If they do not need to be seen by a Counselor or Faculty Cadre, refer the student out.
- Otherwise, assist the student in completing the triage intake form. During busier times, it can be more efficient to simply ask the student to put his/her name on the form and filling out the rest of the form on the student’s behalf. As you complete the form, include any extra bits of information collected during triage conversation (e.g., program of study, transfer destination, etc.)
- Resist the urge to FIX any problem at the front desk
- For quick issues (have transcripts and want override, Prerequisite Error, Third Attempt), hand the triage form to the Express counselor or ask the student to take the form to CB219 (see below)
Express:
- An express counselor has been designated for every shift. Check in with the Triage counselor to determine if an express Counselor is needed during that shift.
- In this role, you will handle issues such as:
o third attempts
o prerequisite errors
o retest requests
o backup phone to Nancy & Tonya
CB219 Annex Counselor (starting early June):
- In this role, you will handle issues such as:
o eMAPs/eWRAPs
o math scores
o general studies degree audit
o “quick questions”
o ARTSYS demo (can be referred to Jeanie)
Remember to state up front that if you determine student needs more time you will refer him/her back to Triage counselor.

CH100A/B to CH099A/B in fall 2011
The content of the course is the same and it is still prep for CH101A/B for those students who do not meet the Chemistry portion of the prerequisite.
- How will this change to non-credit impact repeats? For example, students that took the course and failed who need to repeat, will that failing grade still be calculated in their GPA?
Per Kathy Wessman, a student retaking CH099A/B after previously having had CH100A/B with a low grade will have the CH100A/B grade replaced with the more recent CH099A grade for the purpose of GPA calculation. So even though CH099A/B is 0 credits, that grade will replace the low grade in CH100A. Of course cases like this may slip through the cracks so in those cases the Campus Registrar would need to be alerted of this. - Would students who have attempted CH100A/B three times need to do an Academic Appeal for a fourth attempt at CH099A/B?S.
The courses are equivalent, so students would need to do an appeal.

Visiting Students Need to Get it in Writing!
A UM-College Park-Specific Warning: certain courses at Montgomery College appear on the MC General Education List but are not transferable for visiting UMCP students who want to take summer courses at MC. The courses below appear in ARTSYS as transferable, but only if the students are current Montgomery College students. Once students officially enroll at UMCP, they “belong” to UMCP and need to obtain a Permission to Enroll Form signed by a College Park adviser in advance in order to take any Montgomery College course. Some courses (noted below) are not approved for current UMCP students to transfer back to UMCP.
The footnote in the UMCP Transfer Database http://www.sis.umd.edu/bin/tcecourseFrame?institution=52431A for the courses below states that no permission will be granted to take these courses for current UMCP students (Footnote 17)
Language Courses: AR 101 & 102 Elementary Arabic; FR 101, 102, 201 French; RU 101, 102, 201, 202; SN 101, 102, 201;
Arts courses: AR 101, AR 102, AR 103, AR 104, AR 112, AR 124; EN 218 Intro/Creative Writing; PG 150, PG 161
EN Literature courses: EN 122 Mythology, EN 209 The Bible as Literature, and EN 221 The Short Story
Health - HE 100, 101H, 109, 205
IS 273 Integrated Arts
Math MA 130, 131, 282, 284
MG 201 Business Law
SP 108, 112 Speech
PY 221 Abnormal Psychology
The courses above will transfer for future UMCP students but not current UMCP students coming back to MC.
Any visiting UMCP student should have a signed Permission to Enroll (PTE) Form for any course: http://www.bsos.umd.edu/media/23579/pteform.pdfUMCP PTE Information: http://www.tce.umd.edu/pte.html
What about current MC students who have been accepted at UM for Fall 2011? They don’t officially "belong" to UMCP until they start classes there in late August. They may take the courses above or any summer course at MC without a Permission to Enroll Form until they become true Terps – that is, up until the semester that they enroll as full-time UMCP students.
Does MC need to collect Permission to Enroll Forms or e-mailed permission from advisers?
No - but making a note of the existence of permission in Banner is helpful. The permission is for the protection of the student who should be advised to hold on to all written approvals for future use. We are working with a student now whose completion of a course in 2008 is in question by UMCP - students should maintain their own records.
MC Admissions may use a copy of a Permission to Enroll form to give an override to students to register for a class, see details here:MC Admissions Steps for Visiting Students: http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/edu/department2.aspx?id=20102
Bottom line: students taking a summer or winter course at MC who attend a different school full-time should have something in writing to verify that their home school will accept a course taken at Montgomery College.

Waitlist Reminders
*Notification to Students: Students remaining on a waitlist the last business day before a semester/term will receive an e-mail notification encouraging them to select a CRN with available seats. Due the concerns of some faculty members, students will not be advised to attend a first class if they are not already registered, recognizing that some students may still choose to do this on their own.
Process
- Students will be permitted to add themselves to the waitlist for a class through 11:59 p.m. the night before a class begins.
- Students receiving a notification that a seat has opened may add themselves to the class through 11:59 p.m. the night before the class. After that time, students will need to bring a copy of their notification and a Registration Form to register in person at Admissions and Records. Students must add the class before its first meeting or they may be denied approval to join by the instructor.
- Students may receive notifications that a seat has opened on the first day of class. Students must add the class before its first meeting or they may be denied approval to join by the instructor.
Additional improvements for summer and fall
- Admissions and Enrollment Management [AEM] will solicit feedback from Department Chairs, Faculty Councils and Deans after each registration period with the intent of continuing to improve the process for subsequent terms.
- AEM will send reminder e-mails to faculty prior to the beginning of each term with the above mentioned dates and reminders of how to print waitlists. AEM will NOT distribute waitlists. Use of the waitlist once a course begins is at the complete discretion of each faculty member.
- AEM will continue to update waitlist information and FAQs for students, faculty and staff on the following pages:

Advising Pointers for AELP Students
- For EL 103 students registering for EL 104,
RD 103 and EL 110 are pre- or co-requisites for EL 104. - Students who need to take SP 102 should take that course ASAP. Not doing so will cause problems later when trying to register for EL 104.
- Students should NOT take classes more than one level apart across tracks (i.e. EL 101, RD 103).
- RD 102 Students may take Math Placement as RD 103 students are at least allowed to take MA 094.
- Students who register for Summer Sessions are NOT encouraged to take more than one course per Session as these are highly intensive in nature.
- Students should be cautious about attempting two writing courses in the summer, especially “C” students.
- Reason: 40% of “C” students in EL 103 fail EL 104 (not just in summer) - EL 110 has pre- / co-requisites of RD 102 and EL 102
- RD 103 / EL 104 students should take the EMAP to prepare for the transition to the next stage in their studies at MC. Students can access the EMAP at:
http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/emap/ - Tips for ESL Students to Improve Their English:
1. Read as much as possible. Select books, novels, magazines, etc. at or slightly above your level. If you have to refer to the dictionary more than a few times per page, it is too high a level.
2. When reading, pay attention to the kind of language in that writing to imitate in your own writing.
3. Try to speak English as much as possible outside of class.
4. Visit and complete exercises on grammar websites (see attached list of URLs).
5. When watching TV, turn on Captions.
6. Listen to National Public Radio (88.5 FM). On NPR websites, you can find transcripts for many of the shows. There is an iPod NPR app.
7. Read at least one news article from an online newspaper every day -- even if it's short. This will help improve one’s academic vocabulary and add to one’s background knowledge, which is critical for reading comprehension and writing.
8. Watch the BBC news on Channel 26 or 32 and/or go to the BBC website, which has a Learning English link that has vocabulary and grammar, easier news stories, and quizzes (keeping in mind this is British English).
9. Visiting tutors in the Writing Center to receive general assistance (but not editing).
10. To improve one's language in writing, use a dictionary written for ESL learners, such as the Longman Advanced American Dictionary or the Cambridge online dictionary (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/).
11. To improve one’s academic vocabulary, work on the exercises at http://www.academicvocabularyexercises.com/ (Vocabulary Exercises for the Academic Word List).

- I:\SHARED\CB215 Doc Masters\MAP_IMAP_eMAP DOCS\Handouts\course placements & assessment levels.pdf Taken from Kathryn's E-mail: Ken Weiner provided the following clarification about the financial aid issue that was raised at our Counseling Discipline meeting yesterday. One critical follow-up to yesterday regarding the concern that new financial aid regulations will limit financial aid to only one repeat of a course. Folks are apparently confusing this with a new regulation which will now permit financial aid for one repeat of a course that a student has already passed, in those instances when the student is looking to improve the grade in the course. There is no change at all to the regulation regarding the number of F's or W's of a course that financial aid will cover, providing that the student is still making overall satisfactory progress in other courses.

A& P Reminder
Radiologic Tech Information
Starting next year, Xray technicians must have a degree from a college. This means that persons who enroll in an Xray training from any of the three hospital radiology programs (Holy Cross, Washington Adventist and Washington Hospital Center) must enroll at Montgomery College or other regionally commission approved College or School. Students will get their x-ray courses at the hospitals but must come here for their general education courses. MC provides this same option for military trained x-ray technicians.

TEAS Update
Because of the significant decrease in the number of question in English, the nursing faculty decided to change the requirements to: Reading 83% & the Adjusted Total Score 66%.
PTA and RT have not significantly changed their requirements.
This has created a great deal of difficulty for all. Students are upset that they cannot use the Version V required scores in nursing for their Version IV test. Unfortunately, ATI did not give warning that the test was changing.
Students can be referred to see Dr. Charmaine Cruise, Nursing Retention Coordinator, office Cafritz building, room 124, phone 75808, Charmaine.cruise@montgomerycollege.edu for assistance identifying appropriate resources for the TEAS.

F-1 Students - Extensions
From Heidi:
If a student is verifying information for an I-20, the major needs to match in Banner (it can be a double or second major – the student does not need to change majors).
What we need from our counselors is really two things on the letter:
- Which semester we expect this student to complete the DEGREE program in the major they are asking about.
If they need to add or change to have that major in Banner, please give them the form. If they wish to also complete a Certificate or Letter or Recognition those classes need to be incorporated into the degree program (they cannot be done afterward). - What is the reason they would not be done at the end of this current semester.
Usually they started in AELP or they changed a major or the College sequencing or offering of the courses means they need an extra semester.
If the reason is that the student had to repeat a course several times, has a gpa below 2.0 so cannot graduate, or avoided taking the Math placement test and now needs extra time just to do developmental Math, please be aware that will be a problem!
In those cases the student may need additional counseling on transferring to a different educational environment, taking classes in summer or winter terms to ‘catch up’ or getting extra help or DSS testing.
F-1 Students in Pre-Health Sciences
· We can only give them an extension to complete the courses they need to apply to the Health Science major.
· Once they have been accepted, they transfer to Takoma Park and get a whole new I-20.
