New Hold - GR

  • A hold code in SOAHOLD equaling GR only stops the student from applying on-line for graduation.
  • The student must request a major change first, then can go back on line to apply for graduation.
  • Once the major code has been changed to something other than the codes below, remove the hold.

    List of Majors for Setting Holds: 000A , 000B , 520 , 530 , 550 , 560 , 570 , 580 , 590 , 900A , 902A

Katie Grocki already had a student contact her about the hold because Financial Aid told the student the hold was on his record.

GOING PAPERLESS -- Academic Restriction & Banner

Remember, you can remove the academic restriction hold on SOAHOLD to allow restricted students access to online registration for two courses.

If you give the student permission to take more hours, there is no need to use the paper registration form. Instead make a note in SPACMNT, indicating the max number of hours the student may register for in the upcoming semester. It is also helpful to indicate specific courses discussed.

Direct the student to the SV building in order to have their max hours increased so they may register for the remaining hours in MYMC.

Example in SPACMNT:

Note to ARR: Based on discussion with student, he has permission to take up to 13 semester hours in spring 2011. Student plans to register for AR101, repeat BI101, EN102 and SP108. Also, recommended DS106 in place of SP108.

Changes to Biology...and other Curriculum Changes

BI 204 with a grade of C or better is now the pre-req for Bi 205. And…for this spring 2011, Rockville only offers BI 205.

Please review this and other recent curriculum changes at:

MC's LPN - RN Admissions

From Barbara Nubile:

The change is that there is now an LPN-RN transition course (NU130). To enter the LPN-RN Transition Course, a student must have all first and second semester courses completed, which includes the math foundation. After completing NU 130, the student will be entering the nursing program in the third semester and not the second semester as was done previously. An LPN taking the transition course during the summer will graduate from the program the following May.

Since the implementation of the transition course, the retention and graduation rates have improved dramatically.

summer session I & II
NU 130
8 credits

fall semester
NU 230
8 credits

spring semester
NU 205, NU 233, NU 234
9 credits

Since this is an accelerated program, students are also advised to have NU 203 (and other non-nursing courses) completed prior to entering NU 130.

Gen Ed Worksheet for Student with Advising Notes

Can't get your hands on a catalog, but want to give the student a copy of the distribution courses? Anne Schleicher has compiled a handy worksheet for this purpose.

See: General Education Course List 2010-2011 with Transfer Advising Notes
(Recommended for all students; required for students who are new to Montgomery College in Fall 2010 and thereafter)

ADVISING UPDATE:

Confusion has arisen about the status of General Education which were not reapproved for new students starting Fall 2010 and thereafter – see the list below for specific courses. These previously accepted General Education Courses were still showing in the Online Catalog with their old Gen Ed designation (for example, AR 229 Jewelry Making and Metalsmithing was still listed with an ARTD designator in the course description, even though the course no longer appears on the Gen Ed List for 2010-11). The reason these courses still had a Gen Ed designator in the Online Catalog is because they officially are not on the Gen Ed list beginning 201120 Fall 2010, which does not start until next week.

In order to prevent concern among students, the General Education Committee has agreed to grant General Education credit for the courses listed below which were removed from the new 2010-11 General Education List. Students NEW to MC in Fall 2010 may use these “removed” courses to fulfill the Gen Ed requirements shown below if taken this Fall 2010. Instructors of these courses have been notified of this situation. As per the grandfathering agreement for the changes on the Gen Ed List, students who started at MC prior to Fall 2010 can continue to use these courses from the “old list” (2009-10) until Fall of 2016.

Change in Class Registration Payment Deadlines

The table below lists the delete dates for fall semester registration:

If students register for fall classes: If no payment arrangement has been made, students will be DROPPED from classes on:
Before August 9 at 7 a.m. August 9, 2010 at 7 a.m.
August 9 to August 23 at 7 a.m. August 23, 2010 at 7 a.m.
August 23 to August 30 at 7 a.m. (NEW) August 30, 2010 at 7 a.m.
August 30 to September 7 at 7 a.m. (NEW) September 7, 2010 at 7 a.m.
On or after September 7 (NEW) Payment arrangements are required at the cashier's office prior to registering for classes.

Students who have made arrangements for payment will not be dropped for non-payment. Among these students are those with financial aid, signed forms with the Office of Student Financial Aid to hold their places in classes, active MC Tuition Installment Plans (TIP), and third-party (sponsor) payment arrangements with paperwork on file. Again, these students will not have their registration deleted. For additional information, open the attached Fall 2010 Registration and Payment Chart or go to the Payment Schedule Web site. Also, open the attached PDF file to see the new Registration and Payment Procedures for Faculty.

Advising Using the New General Education List 2010-11

The “New” General Education Course List appearing in the 2010-11 Catalog has undergone some changes. The structure of the program (Foundations and Distributions) remains the same; however, some courses (shown below) are no longer part of the updated General Education Program.

Beginning Fall 2010, all students, regardless of year of entry, are encouraged to select courses from the General Education List in the 2010-2011 Catalog:

1) The General Education Course List 2010-11 (as it appears in the 2010-2011 MC Catalog)

2) * General Education Course List 2010-2011 with Transfer Advising Notes * for students who are undecided about a transfer destination or who are considering transfer to schools outside of the State of Maryland * This is the Preferred Page to give to students - and it fits on just two sides of a paper!

Students who enrolled at Montgomery College prior to Fall 2010 are encouraged to follow the new list above; however, they may continue to choose courses from last year's 2009-10 General Education List for six more years (until Fall 2016) if they do not have a 2 year break in attendance. The specific courses from which they may choose are shown below. Use a color printer to print your own Adviser’s Reference List with highlighted gen ed courses no longer available to NEW students here.

Please note that Degree Audits run through Banner (CAPP) will not automatically pick up these removed courses if they are taken in Fall 2010 and thereafter. Counselors will need to refer to the Gen Ed List to make the distinction for the 24 removed courses shown below - if they are taken after Fall 2010 by students who enrolled prior to Fall 2010, they will still qualify as General Education courses, but they are not coded as Gen Ed in Banner if taken Fall 2010 and thereafter.

Thank you for your help in guiding students through these first significant changes in the General Education Program since 1996 – 14 years ago!

Hopefully, this sounds more complicated than it really is – please see the list of course changes shown below
. Faculty teaching courses on the “old” list will be asked to provide information on the course syllabus stating “This course satisfies a General Education Distribution Requirement only for students who entered Montgomery College prior to Fall 2010. It is not a General Education Course choice for students new to MC in Fall 2010 and thereafter.”

What’s the Difference Between the 2010 and the 2009 Catalog Year Lists?

Some courses have been removed from the General Education Program as part of the updating process
(
see Gen Ed Criteria used). In general, “second-level” courses were removed (except in science), courses did not reapply for the new list, or courses were moved to another Distribution.

Advanced Credit

Attached is a chart of how AP credit scores transfer to MC and to UMCP, UMBC, Towson and UMUC. I:\SHARED\CB215 Doc Masters\Counseling & Advising Resources\APCreditCompChartMC.pdf There are several courses where there are discrepancies in what MC accepts (scores of 3 or higher) and the other schools where they accept only 4 and 5 scores.

It is VERY important when advising students who have AP scores to make sure they are aware if they will get credit for these scores when they transfer. For example if they have a score of 3 on the AP Macro Economics test then MC transfers it in as EC 201 however UMCP, UMBC, and UMUC either do not transfer the course or they give credit for a lower level economics course. So students wanting to go to UMCP Smith School of Business or to UMUC would need to take the EC 201 here even though we are giving them AP credit with a score of 3.

If MC grants AP credit for a course used as a general education requirement according to MHEC four year Maryland schools must use the course to fulfill general education requirements however the credits do not transfer.

Paper Schedules

A new decision has been made for the summer/fall version of the schedule of classes, as well as future schedule printing. There will be a limited run of the summer/fall 2010 schedule and then beginning July 1, there will be no future printing of class schedules for future semesters. There will be communications forthcoming from AAR. The impact of not printing the class schedules will be evaluated and, if absolutely necessary, the decision will be revisited.

The deans of student development are requesting that each student development department discuss how this will affect services and develop and implement a plan that incorporates the lack of print schedules.

Visiting Students

F-1 Letters

With 700+ international students, approximately 250 F1 students will make appointments to discuss their individual circumstances, but only about 200 will need letters for their files. To ensure that this responsibility is equitably divided, we will follow the following guidelines.

1. Letters will only be written for students who have set up an appointment with a Counselor – not to be done during walk-in.
2. If a student approaches a Counselor, requesting a letter, the student must first go to 215. Either Nancy or Tonya will keep track; so no one is overwhelmed with this. Even if you’d like to set up the appointment yourself, first send the student to 215.

Waitlist Feature Expanded

Based on recommendation from the Collegewide Deans, summer and fall registration will include expanded waitlist offerings. All courses will have a waitlist, except courses with complex corequisites that make it difficult to maneuver off of the waitlist. The attached Excel spreadsheet lists specific CRNs with no waitlist by term.

I:\SHARED\CB215 Doc Masters\Counseling & Advising Resources\Waitlist Exclusions Summer and Fall.xls

I:\SHARED\CB215 Doc Masters\Counseling & Advising Resources\Waitlist FAQ for Faculty.pdf

Waitlist Limitations
- Banner cannot stop remaining /available seats from showing greater than zero for waitlisted courses in Banner/MyMC. However, the WL course column will be visible in MyMC, ZSCIRSE and in the .edu Schedule Search.
- Student must go to “Register or Add/Drop Classes” screen and type in CRN to add themselves to a waitlist; Banner does not allow students to add themselves to a waitlist via the general Schedule Search function.

New Faux Code

NEW FAUV 035/055 Coding

To answer the Collegewide Deans request to end the use of FAUX 003 and FAUX 005, Admissions & Enrollment Management has instituted FAUV 035 and FAUV 055 codes, beginning with the fall 2010 semester. FAUV 035/FAUV 055 will override assessment levels only. The new FAUV codes WILL NOT override any prerequisites. A FAUV 035 or
FAUV 055 will be added to a student’s record upon receipt of the following:

- FAUV 035: An unofficial transcript from an accredited US college or university showing a “C” or better in an English composition course of 100 or higher (overrides English/reading assessment levels)

- FAUV 055: An unofficial transcript from an accredited US college or university showing a degree conferred with date (overrides all assessment levels)

- This documentation can be printed in front of an MC faculty/staff member (include signature and date if you are a witness to the print) from another schools website (like MyMC), mailed or brought in-person by student, or faxed directly from the previous institution to MC.

- If the Admissions & Records staff needs additional assistance validating the English courses, the student will be referred to the campus English Department.

The new FAUV codes DO NOT remove the burden of checking prerequisites, so as an individual instructor, you may be asked for a prerequisite override. The burden of prerequisite checking is different by department and campus, so depending on your department’s system, students may seek signatures/Banner overrides from you. Please ask to see students’ unofficial transcripts before granting permission.

Graphic Design - AFA or AAS

When you see students interested in Graphic Design please be aware that the college offers two programs in this area. One is an AFA not offered at Rockville (page 109 of your catalog) and leading to a BFA. The other degree is the AAS offered here. (page 179 of your catalog) BOTH have transferable courses but the AAS is the only one designed for students to get the AAS and go to work.

Bottom line here is to send students to the department so THEY can figure out which program works best for the student if you are unsure.

Financial Aid Update for SP10

Starting on 11/23/09, the financial aid office sent all 2009-10 financial aid applicants and recipients an email reminder of the semester credit hour totals required for the different enrollment levels, the spring semester enrollment lock date for Pell grants, and a reminder to check MyMC for financial aid status changes.

Students on financial aid probation for academic progress also received a reminder that fall grades are checked the first week of January 2010. If students are suspended and their aid is removed, or their aid is removed because the financial aid office cannot document fall semester attendance, students may have their spring registrations deleted. UMUC - Admission of F-1 Students

Effective December 14, 2009, University of Maryland University College (UMUC) stopped issuing I-20s to students who have or are seeking F-1 visas. This was adopted because the university’s online learning environment was not conducive to students on F-1 status, who must satisfy on-site registration and attendance requirements.

The International Student Advising (ISA) office will continue to fulfill all reporting requirements in SEVIS related to students who have gained full admission to UMUC and were issued I-20s prior to the effective date.

If you have any questions, please contact ISA at (240) 684-2116 or ISA@umuc.edu. .

Difference between EN102 and EN109

EN102 and EN109 share the core curricular focus on rhetoric, persuasion, and argument. EN102 prepares students to write academic essays, and its writing assignments are principally in essay format. EN109 prepares students to write academic essays and to apply academic essay standards and methods to workplace writing by assigning both formal academic essays in whole and academic essay writing as part of document types found in the working world such as memos, feasibility reports, and proposals. For example, in EN109 a Problem Report would be organized generally as a standard academic essay, but would also conform to requirements for a problem statement (elements of definition apply), background explanation (exposition, description, narrative), analysis of information usually including a comparison of options for solutions, and a reasoned argument for a recommended solution.

Financial Aid Changes & Advising for SP10

AELP Students Receiving Financial Aid

For the SP10, AELP students with financial aid will be in the same bind as in the fall. For now, it is best to direct students taking AELP courses AND receiving financial aid to the Financial Aid Office to explore their options. This issue should be resolved once the proposed curriculum change is passed on February.

In the case of courses with more semester/contact hours than credits, the number of credits will be used to determine full-time status for financial aid.

For example: A student taking EN 101A, MA 180, and HS 201 will only be considered as having 10 hours.

BOTTOMLINE: THE BEST POLICY IS TO DIRECT STUDENTS TO THE FINANCIAL AID OFFICE.
