Voc Rehab Academic Worksheet

Attached is a new requirement for Vocational Rehabilitation students.  (available in C&A OneDrive)

  1. The academic worksheet (first attachment) must be completed by an academic advisor,
  2. Then submitted to a Military Enrollment Services Specialist to sign.

To show an example, specifically for the estimated yearly cost, please refer to the second attachment.  Estimated yearly costs listed on the example is for tuition and fees to be full-time for fall and spring semesters, plus an estimated cost for books.

Counseling and Advising Chairs, if you would be willing to share with your departments so as to prevent barriers for this student population, that would be most helpful.

Please direct specific questions to Movie Smith,
    Mo.Smith@montgomerycollege.edu.

Katie Kelpy, M.A., Campus Registrar-Germantown

Hello everyone,

I just thought I would share my experiences with this process since I have completed many of these in the past.  Veterans who receive vocational rehabilitation from the Department of Veterans Affairs may ask counselors to complete this form.  Please be aware that it is meant to be an estimate to help the vocational rehabilitation counselor gauge where they are in their degree plan. It is also meant to encourage students to meet regularly with the appropriate college personnel for counseling & advising. Often times students change their major and, therefore, may ask you to update the form.

This form does not require an “official certification.”   If you have questions about this process, you may contact va@montgomerycollege.edu.

I hope this helps!

MC’s School Facility Code? I believe it's the federal code, which is also used on the FAFSA 006911.

E-mail sent to student regarding request for ETP:

My name is Mo Smith and I am a VA Registration Specialist at Montgomery College. I can assist you in getting and Educational Training Plan (ETP) However, I cannot create your ETP until you have registered for class. Please let me know when you have registered for class.

Post 9/11 GI Bill Housing Allowance COVID-19 FAQs - Summer 2020

Montgomery College, like many other Institutions of Higher Learning, has converted Summer 2020 residential classes to distance learning due to COVID-19. Congress recently passed legislation that changes the way the VA will pay the housing allowance associated with the Post 9/11 GI Bill when residential classes have been converted to online. Below are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) regarding those changes along with a list of Summer 2020 residential classes offered at MC that have been converted to online.

Post 9/11 GI Bill Beneficiary – Monthly Housing Payments: What happens when a modality changes for enrollment terms due to COVID-19?

Based on the new law, Post 9/11 GI Bill students who pursue resident courses converted to an online modality solely due to COVID-19 will continue to receive the Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) rate for resident training. The law only authorizes this special authority from March 1, 2020, to December 21, 2020.

• Note: other types of changes to the student’s enrollment status may affect payments. Non COVID-19 related changes must still be reported per normal requirements.

Educational Institutions – Post 9/11 GI Bill Tuition and Fee Payments: Will there be any impact on tuition and fee payments when only the modality changes within a term due to COVID-19?

Tuition and Fees reporting requirements will not change due to COVID-19 national emergency, nor will VA’s rules for benefit payments.

• Note: All standard adjustments and amendments still apply to non-COVID-19 circumstances.

VA education students – Remedial/Deficiency class:  Will VA education students be allowed to continue or start remedial/deficiency level courses at Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) who convert to an online modality due to COVID-19?

Based on the new law, an approved educational institution which converts an approved resident Remedial/Deficiency course to an online training modality for that course (distance learning), may continue to certify those credit hours to the VA as resident credit hours during the authorized timeframe: March 1, 2020, to December 21, 2020.

Summer Enrollment Full Time Equivalency

A 3-credits course that runs for five weeks is considered ¾ time. A 4-credit course for five weeks is full time. Students should consult the TRAINING TIME EQUIVALENCY TABLE on the link below to determine their status: https://www.gibill.va.gov/Training/Spreadsheets/Semester_Hours.pdf

Veterans Officials Contingency Plan - Summer/Fall 2019

Please review the contingency plan below devised in response to the two vacancies left in the Enrollment Services Veteran's positions at the Rockville and Takoma Park/Silver Spring campuses --specifically, Tyuet Jackson and Jackson Trana.

If you have any questions or additional suggestions to the attached plan, contact Ernest Cartledge or Dean Bartolomeo.

_____________

Due to retirement of the Rockville veterans certifying official and the pending departure of the Takoma Park/Silver Spring veterans certifying official, the new coverage schedule below will begin Monday, August 19.

Movie (Mo) Smith will be the sole certifying official until further notice. Based on the number of students at each campus, we have given two days to Rockville and one day each to Takoma Park/Silver Spring and Germantown.

On days that Mo is not physically present at a campus, the campus registrars will help with the collection of certification forms and will scan and email them to him for processing. Given the workload, we have dedicated Thursday as the day where Mo can focus solely on processing forms.

Advising Information for Student that are Military Veterans & Service Members

As we get deeper and deeper in to the peak advising and registration season you may be meeting with new and returning students that share with you that they are Veterans or current service members. It appears that self-disclosure on behalf of the students is the best way the College has at the moment in identifying students that would likely benefit from Combat2College (C2C).

If you are working with a Veteran or current service member, please refer them to the C2C website. In addition, please print out a copy of the Military Veterans and Service Members Student Checklist. This helpful sheet walks the students through the necessary steps to apply and enroll in MC, but also take care of their VA benefits and connect with the C2C Program Assistant.
