Where's My Degree?

Students often write to ask when their degrees will be available -

Below is a way to reply to students based on Sylvia Chen’s Autoreply which briefly says:   “Fall 2023 Graduation:   By February 2024, the Notation of your Degree/Certificate obtainment will appear on your official transcript.  Email notifications will be sent through your MC student e-mail by the end of March 2024 telling you about delivery of your diploma/certificate.”

Students transferring to UMGC in particular are often concerned because they need proof of their graduation to receive the Completion Scholarship.

You can check to see what’s going on –

  1. First, look at the student’s record in SHADEGR to be sure the student DID apply for graduation – it will look like this:   PG (Pending) 12/17/2023 .  When the graduation has been processed, the PG will change to GR.
  1. Then you can run a quick Degree Works audit aka “New Degree Evaluation” https://dwpublic.glb.montgomerycollege.edu/RespDashboard/  (you need to log in to your MyMC for this) to see if all requirements have been fulfilled.

If the Application for Graduation is in the system and the Degree Works Audit shows that everything is finished, then you can send this message to the student:

It looks like things are lined up for your graduation -

To view when your MC Degree has been processed and posted to your Transcript:

Typically, MC degrees are officially posted to your transcript about 3 – 4 weeks after the actual date of graduation.  This is because all final grades from the semester must be collected for all graduating students first in early January and then Graduation Coordinators on each campus manually run an individual audit to confirm each graduation, so the process usually is completed by the END of January/February 1st for a Fall (December) graduation, by the end of June for a Spring (May) graduation and by the end of September for Summer (August) graduation.

Students are notified by e-mail that the degree has been processed.. That message will also give information about the delivery of diplomas/certificates (usually October for Summer graduations, July for Spring graduations, and late March for Fall graduations.)

In the meantime, starting in early January, you can regularly check your Unofficial Transcript if you go into MyMC and click on the Request a Transcript link – then you can keep watching the top section of your Unofficial Transcript for a “Degree Awarded” date; once you see that, you can safely request that an official transcript be sent to your next school.

It’s quite possible that you’ll see that your degree has been Awarded even before you receive the official batch e-mail from MC saying that graduations have been processed.

Right now, at the top of your Unofficial Transcript, the Degree Date is blank:

DEGREES AWARDED

Pending:

Associate of Arts

Degree Date:

Example:  for a Fall 2023/December graduation, once you see that the date of December 17, 2023 appears in the Degree Date: space, that means your degree HAS been processed and it is safe to go ahead and request an official copy.

Once you see that your degree has been posted to your MC transcript, then you can

Request an Official Copy of your MC Transcript to be sent to another college/employer/ or organization -

  • Go into MyMC,
  • Look for the Request a Transcript Link.
In that link, you will find “Request an Official Transcript” -
  • Then select “Send an Electronic Transcript.”

This will take you to the Parchment Transcript Service where you will follow directions.  There is a $10.00 fee per transcript request.

MC to UMD- Computer Science

I thought I would send this update to my previous message that I shared from UMD’s pre-transfer advising group regarding their recommendation that our computer science students take CMSC 216 to facilitate their transfer to UMD.

Alla Webb from the Computer Science Department indicated that students should be advised to seek guidance from her or another computer science adviser before taking CMSC 216. She indicates that it is a challenging course that may impact a student’s gpa. She also indicated that once a Computer Science major completes CMSC 140, they should be directed to the department for advising at cs@montgomerycollege.edu

Thank you for your message.  MC's CMSC207 Discrete Structures and CMSC216 Computer Systems are the pre-requisites for the next set of Computer Science courses in UMD's sequence (CMSC330 Organization of Programming Languages and CMSC351 Algorithms).  Then, CMSC330 and 351 are the pre-requisites for all of the 400-level Computer Science courses at UMD.  A student would have to get departmental permission to take more than two upper-level Computer Science classes simultaneously.

So, if a student wants to graduate from UMD with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science as efficiently as possible, they should try to fit in CMSC216 at MC before starting at UMD.  Alternatively, they could take CMSC216 at UMD over the summer through the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program (for a 25% tuition discount), if they are starting at UMD in a Fall semester.  Otherwise, it would take more than 4 semester to graduate after starting at UMD.  However, if that is okay with the student, they can wait and take CMSC216 at UMD during their first semester along with other useful classes for their bachelor's degree such as a 400-level Statistics course and upper-level concentration courses outside of Computer Science.  400-level Computer Science courses are typically offered over the summer at UMD so students can accelerate their progress that way too.

Please let me know if you have any other questions at this time.

Best,

Leslie

Transfer Credit Evaluation Updates - Fall 2023

There is one item I wanted to clarify from Phuoc’s email. Danuta Wilson has been hired as the transfer credit evaluator for the Takoma Park campus. Ivy Devers is Carlos’ replacement at the Germantown campus. She will remain at the Takoma Park campus through the end of this year to train Danuta. After the first of the year (2024), Ivy will begin working at the Germantown campus in the Records & Registration office.

Please let me know if you have any questions about these updates.

Thank you,

Pam

Pamela Wessells | Campus Registrar

Montgomery College | Germantown Campus

My last day at MC is November 9th.

Below are my last updates for you while I am in this role:

  1. After two years of vacancy, the transfer credit evaluator position that Carlos Smith used to hold at the Germantown campus has been filled. Her name is Danuta Wilson. Danuta started her new role on September 18 and is currently in training at the Takoma Park campus.
  2. The Transfer Credit email account is now being monitored by Ivy Devers and Marjorie Davis. Please continue to email TransferCredit@montgomerycollege.edu for all your needs pertaining to transfer credit evaluation.

If you have not done so, I strongly recommend you check Perceptive Content first before you reach out to the transfer credit evaluator because you may find an immediate answer to your question there. As a reminder, all transcripts received are scanned and linked immediately upon receipt, and every course of action performed by the transfer credit evaluators is documented there.
  3. The transfer course equivalency spreadsheet on https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/transfer/course-equivalencies.html is currently unavailable. I am updating the spreadsheet and will get it published by next Monday.

Computer Science LEP Change - UM Effective Starting Fall 2024

Please see the important CORRECTIONS regarding the Computer Science LEP Changes for Fall 2024 – sent by Leslie Lindeman today on behalf of UM Pretransfer Advising, the changes to LEP Gateway requirements do not apply for current MC Computer Science students or those who meet the exceptions spelled out below.

Thank you so much for clarifying!  This is good news for all students in the pipeline!

Hi Anne,

We hope that you're having a good semester.  It will be November before we know it!  Thank you for sharing this message.  We just concluded our weekly pre-transfer advising staff meeting and received some clarification regarding the updates to the Computer Science Limited Enrollment Program.

The changes to the gateway requirements do not apply to students who have:

  • already graduated from high school AND
  • already enrolled at Montgomery College or another University System of Maryland institution or another Maryland community college AND
  • will start at UMD before Fall 2028

To reiterate, the Computer Science Limited Enrollment Program changes do not impact the majority of students we've been meeting with in past years because those students have already graduated from high school and started at MC before Fall 2024.  So, nothing has changed for how we advise that population (unless they have a long timeline for transferring to UMD and won't start there until Fall 2028 or later).

The changes will apply to students who graduate from high school in June 2024, for example, and start at MC in Fall 2024.  Similarly, a student who graduated from high school in the past and didn't start at any University System of Maryland institution or another Maryland community college until Fall 2024 will follow the new gateway course policies

As always, feel free to connect with us as you hear of changes and updates at UMD and we'll plan to do the same.  Thank you for all you do to support prospective transfer students!

Best,

Katie, Leslie, and Yenti

UM’s Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) Website shows that students applying to the Computer Science major will need to meet new Gateway Course grade requirements if they plan to start at UM in Fall 2024 and after.

This is a significant change in the minimum grades needed for the three Computer Science Gateway courses:

Computer Science Major -
Students Transferring to UM in Spring 2024
https://lep.umd.edu/documents/ComputerSciencepre2024.pdf

CS Major - Students Transferring to UM in Fall 2024

Requirements must be met by transfer students applying in Spring 2024 for a Fall 2024 Transfer

https://lep.umd.edu/documents/ComputerScience2024andlater.pdf

Previous Gateway requirements:

Three Gateway courses - minimum grades “C –“

Overall minimum cumulative GPA 2.7

Summary of Changes:
Three Gateway course grade minimums raised from minimum
“C minus” to “B minus” and overall cumulative GPA raised from 2.7 to 3.0.

Students applying to the University of Maryland from other institutions apply to LEPs through the general application for admission to the University by indicating their major of interest. Students are first reviewed for admission to the University, and then, if admitted, are reviewed for admission to Limited Enrollment Program majors based on LEP standards.

Applicants who have completed all required Gateway courses at the time of their application are notified of their admission decision in late April for fall admission and late October for spring admission. Students who are in the process of completing the required Gateways at the time of their application are notified of their admission decision to the university at the previously mentioned times but will be notified about the major decision after the semester has ended and final grades for the semester have been calculated. Students should be sure to send their final transcript from their previous institution if they are taking classes at the time of application.

   Gateway Requirements and Policies

  • Completion of CMSC 131 [Object-Oriented Programming I] OR CMSC 133 [Object-Oriented Programming I Beyond Fundamentals] with a minimum grade of C- = MC Equivalent CMSC 203 Computer Science I
  • Completion of CMSC 132 [Object-Oriented Programming II] with a minimum grade of C- = MC Equivalent CMSC 204 Computer Science II
  • Completion of MATH 140 [Calculus I] with a minimum grade of C- = MC Equivalent MATH 181 Calculus I

A minimum grade point average of 2.7 in all courses taken at the University of Maryland and all other institutions is required for internal and external transfer students.

The following guidelines pertain to all Limited Enrollment Programs:

  • Only one gateway or performance review course may be repeated to earn the required grade and that course may only be repeated once. When more than one course can satisfy a gateway requirement, taking a second course from the list will count as a repeat. Please note that a grade of "W" is considered an attempt and must be repeated.
  • Students may apply once to an LEP.
  • Students who were directly admitted and fail to meet the performance review criteria will be dismissed from the major and may not reapply.
  • Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 after admission to an LEP. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the major.
  • Any student denied admission or dismissed from the major may appeal in writing to the individual LEP.

Transfer Students may use the Transfer Credit Services Database of Course Evaluations to determine how past, current or future courses may transfer to the University of Maryland.

Health Sciences Admission Application Updates

The next health science application sent from ORR should be coming in November.

Changes ‘we’ ( me ) suggested may be on there:

  1. Minimum GPA 2.5 of last 24 credits taken or overall.
  2. Five year rule applies to the second AP taken, or our BIOL 213.
  3. There is an exception of PTA, where only BIOL 212 is required.  Thus applies to BIOL 212, which might be why it not listed. Maybe it still won’t be…

Separately, no longer in health sciences meetings, reported to me last week that Surgical Technology will become two year program. Prior to this, SURG courses could be done in one year ( with no life ).  The interim Program Coordinator is Patrice Whiting.

Hope you have a fine week,

Maureen Mirowski, M.S.

MATH 117 & Students in 412D, 412E, and 412F

Re: Hold

* remember to leave comment in Banner-SPACMNT

Departmental: This course is not required for your program (major). Please review the major requirements in the College Catalog or contact a program advisor.

The Biology Department asked that students in 412D, 412E, and 412F receive this registration error message when attempting to register for MATH 117.  For this student, the MATF is MATH 181, and there are no requirements where MATH 117 could be used. The MAJ override will allow registration.

PHIL 140 for Data Science & STEM Students

I'm writing to pass on some information about a class offering that is of interest to students in Data Science. In turn, I'm hoping you can make your counselors and advisors aware so that they can steer students in the right direction.

There is a special section of PHIL 140 targeted to STEM students, and in particular to students in Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, and Data Science. As you already know, that class transfers to UMD as ENEE 200: Technology and Consequences, a required course for Engineering majors, thus accelerating time to degree for our transfer students.

What you may not know is that the course also satisfies the ethics course requirement for Data Science majors here at MC, and that DS students can tailor their final project in that course to address issues directly relevant to their major. I have attached a flyer that I'm hoping you can pass on to folks in your area.

Thanks so much for helping to get the word out about this important offering! Please let me know if you have any questions. I'm also including Rachel Saidi here.

Transfer Advising Update - Applying to UM

For students who have questions about applying to UM – feel free to send them the attached “MC Guide to Applying to UM” dated 10-4-2023.  This document refers students to the UM Pre-Transfer Advisors and also answers questions that students ask us about applying.

Information includes:

  • Meeting Early Action and Regular Deadlines to apply for admission
  • How and where to send an official MC transcript (for either Main Campus or Shady Grove, transcripts should go to UM Undergraduate Admissions Main Campus, not Shady Grove!)
  • Sending documents
    • How to request an MC Official Transcript
    • For students with less than 30 credits completed in college – how to send a high school transcript
    • Sending AP, IB, and/or CLEP credit test scores
  • If English is not a student’s native language – how to provide proof of English Language Proficiency – applies to all students, not just international students
  • Information about MTAP and other Avenues to Admission to UM
  • Where to find help with essay writing
  • Letters of recommendation (they are not required!)
  • How to obtain a General Education Program Completion Stamp for the transcript if a student will not complete an associate’s degree.

The attached MC Advising – Applying to Transfer to UM page also provides the link to the UM Pre-Transfer Advisor’s great Pro-Tips for Completing UM Transfer Applications
and it urges students to contact UM Pre-Transfer Advisors for assistance with all things related to transferring: go.umd.edu/MC2UMD

Additional Details for MC Counselors & Advisors Regarding the General Education Program Completion Stamp – most, but not all MC students will finish an associate’s degree while transferring to UM.  UM’s Transfer Credit Services Office has confirmed that if MC makes a notation on students' official transcripts stating that their Gen Ed Program has been completed, this will allow UM to note that the majority of the UMD Gen Ed requirements will be marked as satisfied, in the same manner as if they earned their associate’s degree.  Many former MC students are told by their UM advisors to contact MC about completing an associate’s degree for this reason.

Ideally any student who arrives saying that they plan to transfer to UM before finishing an associate’s degree should be encouraged to complete the MC General Education Program within their first semesters at MC for this reason.

Here is cut & paste information with directions to obtain the Gen Ed Program Stamp:

How to have a General Education Program Completed Stamp added to your MC Transcript – UM (the University of Maryland, College Park and Shady Grove) will accept a stamp on your transcript showing that you have finished the MC Gen Ed Program if you are waiting to finish an associate’s degree later or even if you are not able to finish an associate’s degree.  UM will use this stamp to mark that the majority of UM’s General Education Program requirements have been satisfied in the same manner as if you earned an associate’s degree.

To have the stamp applied to your transcript, fill out this General Education Evaluation Request Form and send it to the
Registrar for your campus:  https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/admissions-registration/gen-ed-evaluation-request-form.pdf

If you are in the process of finishing General Education courses, WAIT until you see all final Gen Ed course grades posted before submitting the Gen Ed Evaluation Request.  It is best to make the request at least 3 full weeks after the term has ended when you are finishing the remaining Gen Ed courses, so for example, if you are finishing all Gen Ed courses at the end of Fall, then wait and submit the Gen Ed Stamp request in mid- to late-January when you are sure that all of your Fall class grades have been posted.

After you receive an e-mail from MC telling you that the Gen Ed Stamp has been added to your transcript, you can then go to the “Request a Transcript” link in MyMC to request that another Official MC Transcript be sent to UM.  If you are already enrolled at UM, also notify your program advisor after you have sent your updated MC transcript to UM.

New MC Business Analytics AA - Transfer Advising Notes

Here is more information about the new MC Business Analytics AA degree and its transferability to UM College Park’s Smith School of Business - Operations Management and Business Analytics Major.

This degree transfers in its entirety to UM’s Smith School.

Important advising notes for MC Business Analytics students who want to transfer to the UM Smith School of Business (Main Campus and Shady Grove):

  1. The UM Smith School of Business does not require BSAD 101, so students can take MC’s BSAN Intro to Business Analytics in place of BSAD 101.   See the UM Business Analytics Four Year Plan here.
  2. Both MATH 150 and MATH 117 Elements of Statistics are required for the Business Analytics AA, and specifically MATH 117 is required instead of BSAD 210 Business Statistics.
  3. The new Business Analytics AA (see all courses here) has very specific course requirements, so unlike the Business AA, the only room for an Open Elective within Program Requirements might be if a student places directly into ENGL 102 or 103 where an elective could be taken in place of ENGL 101.
  4. It is projected that Business Analytics will be offered at UM – Shady Grove starting Fall 2025.
  5. Students need to be aware of the competitive Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) Admission Requirements for all BMGT majors shown here:  https://lep.umd.edu/business.html , including the need to take Gateway courses (ACCT 221, MATH 117 and MATH 150) and stay within Repeat Policies (only one repeat of one Gateway course is permitted).

For students undecided about this new major, suggest taking BSAN 101 Introduction to Business Analytics first rather than BSAD 101 – BSAN 101 could then be used as an MC Business AA Program Elective if the student decides to pursue a different option as a Business major.

BSAN 101 - Introduction to Business Analytics (R only) – 3 credits An introduction to business analytics and the use of data for decision making in business functions. Course topics focus on understanding various business functions such as sales, customer service, marketing, or IT, and applying essential skills and tools o measure and improve operational outcomes.  Students use Microsoft Excel in practical business scenarios to summarize, visualize, and analyze data. Other data analytics software is also introduced. PREREQUISITE(S): A minimum grade of C or better in ELAI 990 or appropriate score on the English assessment test. Assessment Level(s): ENGL 101/ENGL 011, MATH 050. Three hours each week.   May not be taken concurrently with MATH 017 or MATH 020 or MATH 030 or MATH 045 without appropriate Math assessment score.
