Coding Issues in Banner - What to Do?

Over the past few weeks, you have likely encountered students that “should” be able to register for a course, but are receiving pre-requisites errors.   After some investigation it appears there are a number of issues with the coding in Banner, mostly due to recent changes in the developmental/ELAP sequences.

If you encounter what appears to be an issue with coding in Banner, please take the following steps:

  1. 1)      Check the advising blog, colleagues or the Counseling Chairs to see if the Student Information Systems Specialists  (Debra Ritenour/Jennifer Gottwald) are already aware of the issue.
  2. 2)      Contact the Student Information Systems Specialists directly to see if you can resolve the issue with their assistance.
  3. 3)      If necessary, provide pre-requisite override(s) in Banner and document justification in SPACMNT.
Also, there have been a number of registration issues with students in ELAP courses attempting to register for math courses.  In the case of students with placements into MATH092, MATH093 or MATH096 with an assessment level lower than READ120, you may refer them to Math Department Chairs to discuss permission to enroll in these courses.

MATH092 Option for MATH115 or MATH117

If a student placed into MATH093/MATH096/MATH115A/MATH117A and has really struggled in algebra content, MATH092 is an option.  However, MATH092 is NOT a good option for students in need of MATH110 to fulfill the math foundation.  It is an option for those in need of MATH115 or MATH117.

MATH 092 - Foundations of Mathematical Reasoning

Who is this class for?

Students who are needing to complete only a general education math course such as MATH110, 115, or 117.  This is meant to be a potential replacement for MATH093.  We know that as of this writing the catalog still doesn’t list MATH092 as satisfying the prerequisite for MATH110, 115, and 117 but it will be updated soon.

What’s the difference between this and MATH093?

With a lower bar to get in this class will cover the needed material for elementary and intermediate algebra as well as descriptive statistics.

Which students will need to take MATH080?

Students who score below 44 on the AALG or score between 44 and 62 on AALG and wish to continue to higher math will need to take MATH080.  If a student takes MATH092 and then wants to go to a class on the MATH096 track they will need to restart on the other track.  This pushes the decision point where students must choose even sooner.  Good advising and realistic goal setting for students is key.

There are only 4 sections of MATH092 this Fall.

That’s not a question!  Ok, in all seriousness we will have more sections in spring but space will be limited for fall.  If a student is eligible for MATH093 we would encourage that student to take MATH093 instead.

MATH 092 - Foundations of Mathematical Reasoning

Development of algebraic and numerical skills in a context of applications and problem-solving skills and to prepare students for a mathematics foundation course. Topics include quantitative relationships, patterning and algebraic reasoning, functional reasoning, probabilistic and statistical reasoning, incorporating quantitative communication skills and technology. This course does not satisfy the prerequisite for MATH 130, MATH 150, or MATH 165. Not intended for students who have a grade of C or better in MATH 093, MATH 096, or their equivalent. PREREQUISITE(S): A grade of an H or better in MATH 080, completion or appropriate score on the mathematics assessment test; or consent of department. Assessment Level(s): READ 120. Three hours each week.
