Portage Learning courses as Credit for Prior Learning

Montgomery College does not accept Portage Learning courses as Credit for Prior Learning, however, as per the website, the courses are offered through partnership with two different colleges and listed on the partner college/university transcripts:

"Students register and complete their coursework through portagelearning.edu, while official college credit and transcripts are issued by the partner university." Accreditation | Online College Courses | Portage Learning

If the student has transcripts from the partner universities and they meet the MC accreditation requirement, the student must have official transcripts sent to MC following the instructions for Transfer Credit from US Colleges and Universities: Transfer Credits to MC from US and Non-US Colleges and Universities | Montgomery College, Maryland

Let me know if you have any other questions.

New MC Transfer Equivalency Spreadsheet Uploaded!

“How will EGL 1010 English Composition 1 taken at PGCC be accepted by MC?”

Look it up on the newly published MC TES Transfer Equivalency Spreadsheet!   Find schools listed in ALPHABETICAL ORDER to see MC course equivalents.   This information is on the bottom of the MC Course Equivalencies Page - and a quick shortcut to get there is to type “TES” in the MC Search box.  Course Equivalencies | Montgomery College, Maryland https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/transfer/course-equivalencies.html

Link to the TES PDF:  https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/academics/transfer/course-equivalencies/course-equivalency-spreadsheet.pdf

Not all schools and all courses are in the database, but many are.  If you see a missing course, it doesn’t mean that MC won’t accept it, it may be that it has not been evaluated previously.  You can still ask about it. When you open the PDF link, use “Control” and “F” to open a search box.

HUGE thanks go to Pam Jones, MC Student Information Specialist, for the work of pulling data and wrestling this information into a useable format, and to Sean Enright for posting it.

And the answer to the question is:
Prince George's Cmty College EGL 101 Comp I: Expository Writing = MC’s ENGL 102 CRITICAL READ/WRITE/RESEARCH ENGF

This is a good example of the need to look up, rather than assume, that an English Comp I course at another school will be ENGL 101 at MC.  And now… you can quickly check it.

Transfer Credit Evaluation Updates - Fall 2023

There is one item I wanted to clarify from Phuoc’s email. Danuta Wilson has been hired as the transfer credit evaluator for the Takoma Park campus. Ivy Devers is Carlos’ replacement at the Germantown campus. She will remain at the Takoma Park campus through the end of this year to train Danuta. After the first of the year (2024), Ivy will begin working at the Germantown campus in the Records & Registration office.

Please let me know if you have any questions about these updates.

Thank you,

Pam

Pamela Wessells | Campus Registrar

Montgomery College | Germantown Campus

My last day at MC is November 9th.

Below are my last updates for you while I am in this role:

  1. After two years of vacancy, the transfer credit evaluator position that Carlos Smith used to hold at the Germantown campus has been filled. Her name is Danuta Wilson. Danuta started her new role on September 18 and is currently in training at the Takoma Park campus.
  2. The Transfer Credit email account is now being monitored by Ivy Devers and Marjorie Davis. Please continue to email TransferCredit@montgomerycollege.edu for all your needs pertaining to transfer credit evaluation.

If you have not done so, I strongly recommend you check Perceptive Content first before you reach out to the transfer credit evaluator because you may find an immediate answer to your question there. As a reminder, all transcripts received are scanned and linked immediately upon receipt, and every course of action performed by the transfer credit evaluators is documented there.
  3. The transfer course equivalency spreadsheet on https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/transfer/course-equivalencies.html is currently unavailable. I am updating the spreadsheet and will get it published by next Monday.

State Senate Bill 540- AP credits, Transfer Platform, and Denial of Transfer Credit

 Hi Counseling Team,

I wanted to share some pertinent information from State Senate Bill 540, which was approved last July.  I have included the link to the entire bill, but I have copied some of the most pressing matters.

Below are outlined some of the new regulations for transfer, conditions for a new USM platform for facilitating transfer, and what happens when transfer credit is denied.

Also of note is the matter of AP credit.  If community colleges accept a score of 3 on AP exams, state 4 year universities must do the same.

There will likely be more information coming from Dr. Rai’s office about this, but I wanted to make you aware of what is in progress.

https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/2022RS/fnotes/bil_0000/sb0540.pdf

Take good care.

Best,

Erin

SB540- approved July 1

This bill requires each community college and public four-year institution of higher education to participate in a transfer platform to facilitate the transfer of students from community colleges to four-year institutions of higher education

  • The transfer platform must:
    • allow students and advisors to determine if a course will transfer from any community college to any four-year institution of higher education that participates in the transfer platform;
    • provide recommended courses to students for specific programs of study at four-year institutions of higher education; and include other options, as specified.
    • allow students and advisors to determine if a course will transfer from any
community college to any four-year institution of higher education that participates
      in the transfer platform;
    • provide recommended courses to students for specific programs of study at
four-year institutions of higher education; and
    • include other options, as specified.

Denial of Transfer Credit

  • The procedures established must require a receiving institution that denies the transfer of a credit or course to an enrolled student to notify the transfer coordinator or institutional designee of the sending institution and the enrolled student about the denial within a time period that MHEC determines to be the latest possible time for the notification and specify the rationale for the denial.
  • The transfer coordinator or institutional designee of the sending institution must conduct a review, in conjunction with the receiving institution’s designee, within a time period MHEC determines to be appropriate.

AP Credits

The assignment of credit through a nationally recognized standardized exam such as the Advanced Placement (known as AP) exam must be determined according to the same standards that apply to native students in the receiving institution and consistent with the State minimum requirements.

Guidance on Stratford University Closure

From ORR (last updated October 13, 2022)

Stratford University was not regionally accredited, and MC never accepted coursework taken at this institution for transfer credit. At this time, there have been no conversations here at MC regarding accepting credits from Stratford.

Chamberlain University will accept credits from their Nursing program and the Stratford website states that the University of the Potomac will accept credits for Information Technology, Business, and ESL students.  Anne Arundel CC has a statement that they are accepting Stratford students/credits.

As Stratford University Announces Closure, Questions Left Unanswered

As of Sept. 27, the University of the Potomac, a District-based for-profit college, and Chamberlain University, a for-profit healthcare college located in Vienna, Virginia, count among the institutions that reportedly have made arrangements with Stratford University to transfer credits.

Course Equivalency Spreadsheet

Please share the following message with your department.

I am writing to remind you of an existing resource and share a new one – both are supposed to help with advising regarding transfer credit evaluation.

The first resource that has been around since 2015 is markings, post-it notes, and most importantly, course equivalency worksheets of reviewed transcripts that are available in Perceptive Content (formerly ImageNow). This resource provides answers to the following questions frequently asked by students:

Has my transcript been received and/or reviewed?

  1. What courses did I receive credit for?
  2. Why is there a delay of my received transcript evaluation?
  3. Who is my transcript evaluator should I want to ask them directly about my transcript evaluation?

The information above is also accessible in Banner, but access varies and navigation to those Banner tables may be discouraging to some. Therefore, we transcript evaluators take the extra mile to make markings, post-it notes, and equivalency worksheets available in one place for you. If you have not taken advantage of this resource, I encourage you to do so.

The new resource I would like to share with you is the Course Equivalency Spreadsheet. We used to have a web-based course equivalency database through Transfer Evaluation System (TES) of CollegeSource, but it has not been updated for a while and has been taken down. The new Course Equivalency Spreadsheet is exported from Banner monthly and contains approved course equivalencies from incoming transcripts. New equivalencies are added on a continuous basis as transcripts come in. To access the spreadsheet, please click HERE. To view equivalencies of one particular institution, filter the INSTITUTION column. Please note one course may be repeated several times because it is attributed to different categories.

If you have any questions about these resources, please let me know.

Transfer Courses in "Courses Not Used" Section - Appeal

If you run an audit for a student and notice that credits associated with transfer coursework are not used to fulfill degree requirements, be sure to consult with the Transcript Evaluation Office and SIS Team to see if the course can be reevaluated under a different attribute.

For example: SSDIST not used for SSAH core; on appeal the course was deemed as eligible to fulfill SSAH course

Check out the Maryland House Bill 460 related to transfer:

Summary
Requiring the Maryland Higher Education Commission to establish certain procedures that require a public institution of higher education that denies the transfer of a credit or course to an enrolled student to report the denial to the student and the institution from which the student originates and submit to the Commission a report each year listing the denials and the reasons for the denials; and requiring the procedures to direct a certain institution to review a denial of the transfer of a credit or course.

Partial Credits for Transfer Coursework

Hi Everyone,

When students transfer in credits from a quarter system, they sometimes receive what seems like partial credit. In the example below, the student received 2 credits for MATH117 and 2 credits for an Arts Distribution. The 2 credits in each will meet their Math Distribution and their Arts Distribution. The student does not need to repeat MATH117 or the Art course. However, the student needs to make sure they are still going to meet the 60 credit requirement to earn their degree. So, if earning just 2 credits in each of these courses makes them fall short of earning 60 credits, they need to take an additional course to get to 60 credits (any course, does not need to be another Math or Arts course).

A similar advising reminder that comes to mind, is when trying to reach 60 credits for graduation is when a General Studies student takes 2 Natural Science Lab Distribution courses (rather than 1 Lab and 1 Non Lab) the additional credit from the 2nd lab can drop down and be used as one of their elective hours.

I know this can feel complicated, please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thanks so much!

Transfer of AP Credits

What Happens When MC Grants AP Credit for a Course but the Transfer Institution Does Not Accept It?

The AP Transfer Policy for Maryland State Schools is shown at the bottom of the MC AP Comparison Chart which is on this page, center column:  https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/counseling-and-advising/transferresourcesforcounselors.html

AP Credit transfer policy to Maryland State Public institutions: If a student satisfies a General Education Requirement with an AP score of 3 (example, a 3 in Environmental Science @ MC fills a 4-credit Lab Science, then the MD transfer institution should consider a Lab Sci. Gen Ed 4 credit requirement to be filled upon transfer, but the student will have to 'make up' those 4 credits w/ transferable elective credits if a score of 3 for AP Env. Sci. is not accepted.  Students may need to work w/ their MD public transfer institutions to ensure that this policy is recognized.

This is a good point to review as it’s complicated AND we see a lot of students planning to transfer to UM where it is often an issue.

“Trouble” AP credits for UM are:

1.      All AP Histories – US, European and World –
a.      MC grants credit for a score of 3, so if you see that a student has AP credit for just one HIST, then that’s a signal that the student got a score of 3 and UM will not accept a 3.
b.      MC also grants credit for TWO HIST’s if the student gets a 4 or 5, but UM only gives credit for ONE HIST with a score of 4 or 5, so for example if the student has Gen Ed Humanities filled with HIST 200 AP and also GEIR HIST 201, then you need to subtract one of those HIST courses from the transfer credit total.
2.      AP Languages – MC accepts a 3 for most World Language AP tests but UM does not accept a 3, only a 4 or 5.  And MC grants 6 credits of SPAN 201 & 202 for example, but UM only grants 3 credits of SPAN 203 for a score of 4 or 5.
3.      AP Government – MC grants credit for a 3 = POLI 101, but UM requires a minimum of a 4
4.      AP Biology – MC accepts a 3 and grants credit for BIOL 101; a score of 4 or 5 grants credit for BIOL 150, so if you see AP scores for BIOL 101 General Biology that indicates a score of 3.
5.      AP Chemistry - MC accepts a 3 and grants credit for CHEM 109/109L Chemistry and Society; a score of 4 or 5 grants credit for CHEM 131 so if you see AP scores for CHEM 109/109L that indicates a 3.

But a score of 3 is fine for these three subjects ONLY at UM:
1.      AP English Language and Composition is fine, MC grants ENGL 101 and UM grants credit for a Lower Level Elective - LLE
2.      AP English Language and Literature – MC grants credit for ENGL 190 Intro to Lit and UM gives credit for a LLE, so this Gen Ed credit does not need to be “replaced”
3.      AP Art History – transfers to UM as ARTT 150

Just to put it in other words, if a student has filled a Gen Ed Category with an AP score which will not be accepted by UM, if the student gets the MC General Education Program Completion Stamp on their transcript OR graduates from MC with an AA, AS or AAT, then UM will accept the whole Gen Ed Package as completed as usual but the student will need to “replace” the missing credits from an unaccepted AP score with any transferable ELECTIVE course.

Example:  Student has AP credit for AP HIST with a score of 3 used to fill a Humanities Distribution, and the student graduates with a total of 60 credits but UM will only accept 57 credits, so any general elective could be taken to replace the missing 3 credits, does NOT have to be a Humanities course.

Should a student pick up the extra 3 “missing” credits prior to transfer?

a.      One advantage to transferring with 60 transferable credits to UM is that the student is then able to take the needed Advanced Writing course (ENGL 391) in their first semester after transfer, if they come in with less than 60 credits and “make up” the missing credit in the first semester after transfer, then they miss out on having “junior” status and must wait a full semester to take Advanced Writing.

b.      Parking Lot Permits for commuters are based on the number of credits earned (!) so closer-in parking lot assignments are designated for students with 60 + credits, you can see that here:  https://transportation.umd.edu/parking/students

c.       UM majors at Shady Grove prefer that students enter with 60 credits completed, but this is also not required… Items 1 & 2 above do not apply to Shady Grove, but if the remaining credits still need to be made up, then it could be a stress to add them while at USG where full-time enrollment in 5 classes per semester is typically required and students can’t take 100- or 200-level classes so they would need to take an advanced 300/400 level elective to fill in the credits.

One more thing to consider – Financial Aid @ MC will not cover the additional credits needed to make-up AP credits because those credits may not be not needed for graduation from MC.  So yet another point to be aware of…

How do you keep all of this straight?  Print out the AP Comparison Chart  in color and hang it up or bookmark it on your computer.

Also you can go to the UM Transfer Services Center site at this link:  https://www.transfercredit.umd.edu/plc/APGenEd.pdf

This Gen Ed Transfer Policy for Maryland Schools also applies to IB and CLEP credits…  MC accepts most IB scores with a 5, but UM requires an IB score of 6 for many courses.   UM IB Score Chart:  https://www.transfercredit.umd.edu/plc.html#ib

For Private and Out-of-State Schools, search for “AP Credits” on each school’s site.

And, you can refer a student to me for advising if you detect AP or IB questions/issues, I can provide a more detailed look at the situation -  anne.schleicher@montgomerycollege.edu

Transfer Advising for Students Transferring INTO MC

Students transferring in from other colleges to MC often want to know what they need to take at MC to be able to transfer to other 4-year schools – especially how to get into UM College Park.

It gets complicated when looking over a transcript from another college before it has been officially evaluated.  But two useful tools can be consulted:

  1.  See how courses will be accepted by MC through:  TES – the MC Course Equivalency Database – TES Link:  https://tes.collegesource.com/publicview/TES_publicview01.aspx?rid=05b6dfbb-f8e4-4429-951b-2c08de9c55eb&aid=ec3b76c0-5bc7-4bad-84f0-586f5490b4ba      Find it easily by typing “Transfer Equivalency” into the MC Search Box, the result is this Course Equivalencies Page:  https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/transfer/course-equivalencies.html
  2.  And use UM’s Transfer Credit Services Course Database https://app.transfercredit.umd.edu/  (bookmark this?!)

It’s not always consistent, sometimes MC will accept an ENGL course as our ENGL 102 but UM will not accept that same course as their ENGL 101 / FSAW Fundamental Studies Academic Writing course.   Ditto for a college-level math – FSMA Fundamental Studies Math…

So it’s important to check!  And although we could just say to a student “You need to check on this” – looking at how UM lists their courses can be confusing so if we can do this with them with a caution to double-check themselves also, it may help get the student enrolled in the right courses sooner.

Example:  Wesley College – Delaware’s EN 100 and 101 – here’s a comparison of how they transfer (and how confusing they look!)

[and the reason there is now a “window” of time on equivalencies is that UM is trying to review all courses after a certain number of years, in this case, in 7 years, so it doesn’t mean that there is an expiration date but it is a reminder to UM to review]

For this student, I advised getting a current copy of the EN 100 and EN 101 syllabi and contacting the UM English Office directly.  The key question is whether the student wrote a research paper in an English course, if yes, then it’s worth asking UM whether the course might fulfill the FSAW writing requirement.  Can’t hurt to ask, especially because the course description does refer to a research paper which is an important aspect of meeting the State of Maryland’s definition of a college writing course:

Wesley College’s
EN101 College Writing II
Provides continued study and practice of expository writing, with emphasis on research writing, including effective gathering and organizing of materials for critical thinking and writing the library research paper. Students also receive continued practice in writing the summary and the paraphrase and learn correct documentation. Prerequisite: EN100 with a grade of C or better. A grade of C or better in EN101 is required to earn graduation credit. (Offered each semester.) 3 credits

The next question that pops up is “If MC accepts the course as ENGL 102, doesn’t UM have to accept it that way also?”  Short answer: “No” - especially if the student is trying to transfer prior to finishing an Associates degree - proving that the key elements of a college-level English and college-level math have been completed is dependent on a review of all transcripts, not just the MC transcript.

Scary – but better to alert a student to a possible transfer issue early on rather than making an assumption that the MC evaluation is the final answer.

Transfer Credit System - TES

MC uses the TES Credit Evaluation System (through College Source) to look up how courses transfer from other colleges TO Montgomery College – it is really handy to be able to look up other MD community colleges to see how an EN 101 transfers to MC (for example, it clearly states that EN 101 from Frederick Community College transfers to MC as an equivalent to ENGL 102).

It can be found always on MC’s Course Equivalencies Page - https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/transfer/course-equivalencies.html  Worth bookmarking!

Transfer Advising Update – Advanced Placement Credits & General Education Requirements

Students often bring Advanced Placement (AP) credits to Montgomery College; they are noted on the MC transcript as “CR” like other transferred-in courses.  It’s important to determine a student’s actual scores to know whether the credits will later transfer to another institution.  This is because MC currently accepts many AP tests with scores of 3 but some transfer institutions, notably UM College Park, require a minimum score of 4 for all AP tests except these three tests:  Art History, English Language and Composition, and English Literature & Comp.

An updated AP Comparison Chart for Sample Maryland Schools is attached; you can give this to students (by e-mail or print-out) so that they can make determinations.  You can also view a student’s original AP Test Scores through Perceptive Content (Image Now) where transfer documents such as transcripts and AP scores are housed.  Find the AP Comparison Chart always here:  http://advisingmc.blogspot.com/2018/11/comparison-chart-of-ap-advanced.html

MC is in the process of updating and raising minimum AP scores for many tests; however, those updates will not go into effect until Fall 2019.  In the meantime, students who have one or more AP scores of 3 may be caught short in the transfer process if they are not aware that a score of 3 for many tests may mean that the actual credits granted by MC will not transfer.

Here's the good news if the AP score has filled a General Education category at MC:  Maryland State transfer policy says that if a student is granted Gen Ed credit for a course at one school, then the fact that that Gen Ed course was fulfilled should be recognized by a transfer school without a course-by-course match.  So, for example, if a student has fulfilled a Gen Ed Lab Science at MC with an AP score of 3 on the AP Biology test = BIOL 101 4 cr. at MC, then the MD public transfer school should also consider the Gen Ed category of Lab Science to be fulfilled, but the student has to “make up” the 4 credits with transferable elective credits if a score of 3 earns no credit upon transfer.  This is NOT true for private and out-of-state schools, so it’s important to ask students to check AP score minimums at all schools where they are hoping to transfer.  A score of 4 or 5 typically will grant some credit at most schools, but scores of 3 are the big concern.

UM College Park is especially good about following this Maryland State Gen Ed Transfer Policy when it comes to AP scores of 3 – but UM wants to see a completed General Education Program in order for the policy to work.  So if the student has finished all of MC’s Gen Ed Program, demonstrated by completion of an AA, AS or AAT degree, then UM considers 30 credits of their lower-level Gen Ed requirements to be fulfilled.  But if a student has filled one or more Gen Ed categories with a score of 3 where UM does not accept a score of 3 (for example, an AP Biology score of 3 = BIOL 101 Lab Science @ MC but no credit at UM), then the student has to take additional transferable elective credits to fill in the missing 4 credits total to transfer with 60 credits.  Those additional transferable transfer credits do not have to be another Lab Science.

Common examples are:

·         AP Environmental Science score of 3 accepted as MC’s BIOL 105 & 106 4 credits and fulfills MC’s Gen Ed Lab Science.  UM grants no credit for a 3; a score of 4 or 5 in AP Env. Sci grants only 3 credits of Non-Lab Science; however, if an AA/AS/AAT degree is earned, a Gen Ed Lab Science is considered fulfilled by the BIOL 105 & 106 upon transfer to UM with a score of 3 but the student needs to provide 4 more elective credits, either at MC prior to transfer or taken at UM after transfer to fill in credits.

·         AP Histories at MC (American, European and World) – 3 credits of HIST granted at MC, no credit granted at UM; also MC accepts a score of 4 and grants 6 credits of HIST, but @ UM a score of 4 grants only one HIST, 3 credits.

·         AP Statistics score of 3 = MC’s MATH 117; this can fulfill a Gen Ed Mathematics requirement for some majors where a specific math is not listed; however, if a major at UM specifically requires a Statistics (examples, Business and Communication at UM both require STAT 100 = MATH 117), then the AP Stat score of 3 granting MATH 117 at MC will not fulfill the major requirement at UM and the student should take the MATH 117 class at MC to fill this major requirement.

·         AP English Language – a score of 3 at MC = ENGL 101, a score of 4 or 5 at MC = ENGL 101 & 102 6 credits, but at UM, a score of 3 = Elective only; a score of 4 or 5 = is accepted as 3 credits only of FSAW which means that a 4 or 5 fulfills the Gen Ed Writing Requirement/ENGL 101, but a 4 or 5 does not give a student the extra 3 credits of electives at UM.

If you are feeling completely overwhelmed in reading this, help is available!  I can be reached as an online transfer advisor part-time throughout the year.  You can refer a student to me for assistance, just ask them to contact me directly or you can e-mail me and CC the student to make the connection.   anne.schleicher@montgomerycollege.edu

Below is a rather extreme but real situation encountered recently in Online Transfer Advising - you can see the complicated explanation -

Sent: Thursday, October 25, 2018 10:28 AM
Subject: RE: Help with Transferring to UMD

Hi XXX -

I did a Business Audit for you today based on your record at MC.  Your audit is a little complicated because of your AP credits.

You sent your AP scores this past summer and they were evaluated on July 28, 2018.  MC has different minimum scores required for several AP tests, so MC has given you 9 credits, or 3 courses more worth of credit than UM will give you.  So
  • the Good News is that you can qualify for graduation from MC with no problem this coming Spring by taking just 3 classes – ACCT 222, CMAP 120 and ECON 202.
  • but the Bad News is that if you want to transfer to UM with 60 credits finished, you will need to add three more courses / 9 credits to “replace” credit that MC gave you.

The explanation:  UM only gives AP credit for scores of 4 or higher on every AP test except Art History, English Lit and English Lang.  You had:
  • a score of 3 in AP World History = HIST 116 @ MC but no credit at UM for a History course
  • a score of 3 in AP Government = POLI 101 @ MC but no credit for POLI 101 at UM
  • a score of 4 in AP English Language, for which MC gave you 6 credits, both ENGL 101 and 102, but UM will only give you 3 credits for one course = ENGL 102 @ MC = ENGL 101 @ UM so you ARE satisfying the UM English requirement but you won’t be granted 6 credits upon transfer.

Here is the UM AP Credit Chart:
http://www.transfercredit.umd.edu/plc/APGenEd.pdf

Unfortunately, you will need to replace these 9 credits with three more classes if you want to transfer to UM as a Junior with 60 credits.  OR you can just transfer with 51 credits finished, and take more classes there, that would be okay also, but that is only if you attend the Main Campus because UM Shady Grove doesn’t offer lower-level classes.

Okay, so hold on, this gets even more complicated –
  • because you filled a General Education category of Humanities with HIST 116, UM will consider the Humanities Gen Ed category to be completed when you earn your MC degree; same thing for POLI 101 which fills the Gen Ed category of Behavioral/Social Science [BSSD], so they will not ask you to replace the HIST 116 course with another Humanities or the POLI 101 with another Behav/ Social Science.
  • UM does not require MC’s ENGL 101 so you can replace the 3 credits of ENGL 101 that MC gave you with any elective course.
  • In summary, to replace the 3 missing AP courses, you can take any 3 elective courses, 3 credits each, either at MC or at UM.

You have to be careful in selecting electives @ MC because not all MC courses will transfer to UM.  For example, they only take one CMAP, CMAP 120, and the only MGMT course that transfers to UM for Business Majors is MGMT 201 Business Law, but that is not required.  You would be safe choosing any courses from the MC General Education List, for example you could take two three-credit HLTH’s and one ARTS like MUSC 117 World Music or MUSC 131 American Popular Music if those appeal to you.  Here is the UM Transfer Chart if you want to double-check the transferability of your elective courses if they are not listed on the MC Gen Ed List before taking them:

Sorry if this is super confusing!!!  PLEASE ask questions!

Transcript Received - Notification to Student

Dear all,

Please share the following transcript evaluation update with your department.

As you know, we transcript evaluators manually set up Banner to send nightly notifications to students’ MC email after we have posted their transfer credits. Unfortunately, most of the time we can’t review (all) transcripts on the same day they are received due to the high volume of transcripts and the limited manpower. Thus, students whose received transcripts have not been reviewed are left in the dark until their credits are posted, or until we communicate with them one way or another. We’ve always wanted these students to at least be confirmed that their transcripts have come in and what to expect next. The good news is we have now achieved our goal! Beginning Monday, 5/14/2018, a transcript receipt letter is sent nightly to students whose transcript receipt is recorded in Banner during the day.

BIG THANKS to our SIS team – the main contributor of this achievement and to Ivy and Carlos, who will diligently be working alongside with me to make sure notifications are sent out nightly – both for the transfer credit posted letter and the transcript receipt.

I’m attaching both letters so you have an idea what students receive in their notification email.

If you have any questions or concerns about this update, please let me know.

Regards,

Phuoc Dang, M.Ed.

Dear ,

An evaluation of your previous undergraduate college-level and/or non-traditional credit has been completed. You may review your accepted credits by logging into MyMC.

- To log into MyMC, visit www.montgomerycollege.edu and select the MyMC link located at the top of the page.
- Log in information was included in your acceptance letter.
- If you need assistance logging in, please contact the IT Service Desk at 240-567-7222 or itservicedesk@montgomerycollege.edu.

Once you are logged in, click on the "View Grades/Print Unofficial Transcript" link located in "Student Quick Links" on the MC Home tab. This is your unofficial undergraduate credit transcript which will show all the credits awarded and/or accepted by Montgomery College.

The maximum credit that may be earned in transfer is 45 credits toward an associate degree and 70% of the credits required for a certificate.

If you have been awarded non-traditional credit, including but not limited to:
- Advanced Placement
- International Baccalaureate
- CLEP
- Credit by Examination
- Portfolio
- Articulated Credit
- Military
the Maryland Higher Education Commission Code of Maryland Regulations states that a maximum of 30 non-traditional credits may be used toward degree requirements. In addition, of the maximum 30 credits, no more than 15 credits may be a combination of Credit by Examination and Portfolio review. Awarding of non-traditional credit is based on MC policy. Academic Regulation 9.295 Maximum Credit states that military transcripts will be granted no more than 24 credits.

If you plan to transfer, it is recommended that you consult with that transfer institution regarding its non-traditional credit policy.

To discuss how accepted credits may impact your educational program, you may wish to meet with a counselor. To meet with a counselor, schedule an appointment by clicking on the Starfish icon located on the top right of MyMC.

Wishing you a rewarding experience at Montgomery College,

Dear ,

We have received your transcript from your other college and/or prior learning organization today. This confirmation may not include the receipt of transcripts from all institutions you attended, for they most likely
do not come in on the same day.

Your transcript will be reviewed within four to six weeks. We will send you another notification when a review of your transcript has been completed.

Please note only credits that are applicable to your selected program of study (major) will transfer. You can verify your major by logging into MyMC. Click on on the “My Classes” tab and choose “Apply for graduation.” Then choose “Degree Evaluation” and select the current term. If you have not declared a major, complete the Declaration of Change of Program of Study [HYPER LINK https://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/edu/department2.aspx?id=21507] form and turn it in to the Office of Admissions and Records.

If you are applying as a non-degree student and need course prerequisite overrides, a formal evaluation of your transcript is not needed. Please contact a counselor or department chair of your course [HYPERLINK http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/svpa/academic-affairs-division/] for assistance.

More information about transcript evaluation at MC is available at http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/credit-for-prior-learning/index.html.
