For the first time ever, UMCP School of Architecture and Planning announced after several years of efforts on the part of the Architecture Program that all graduates from the Montgomery College Architecture Program who are accepted at UMCP will be accepted into the UMCP School of Architecture and Planning as a junior. Additional general education courses that were part of the freshman and sophomore years will not be necessary. Acceptance into Junior Year studio will be determined by the Montgomery College Architecture graduate’s design portfolio. [The discussion was finalized in January 2015 but I was waiting to hear about acceptances.]
In an effort to make it easier to find advising information in an era of constant change we have developed an advising blog that will be updated as frequently as necessary.

Two New Math Courses - MATH 170 & MATH 171
*MATH 170 Calculus I for Life Sciences
-begins Fall 2015
-is at the same
level as MATH 181 Calculus I with the same prerequisites
-is primarily for
life science majors
-this is MATH 181
with life science applications
-after completing
this course, students may take MATH 171 Calculus II for Life Sciences (see
below) or MATH 182 Calculus II
*MATH 171 Calculus II for Life Sciences
-begins Spring
2016
-has a
prerequisite of MATH 170 or 181
-this is NOT MATH
182
-this is NOT a
prerequisite for 280, 282, 284 like 182
You will receive the new math flowchart soon!
Transfer Info:
*UMCP, equivalent to
MATH 130 Calculus I for the Life Sciences and MATH 131 Calculus II for the Life
Sciences *Salisbury University, MATH 198 Calculus for Biology and Medicine
Course Descriptions:
*MATH 170 Calculus for Life Sciences I
Intended primarily for students of the life sciences. An introduction to the major ideas of single
variable calculus including limits, derivatives, and integrals of algebraic and
transcendental functions; applications to the life sciences. Credit may not be earned in both MATH 170 and
MATH 181. Not intended for students of
the physical sciences, engineering, or mathematics. PREREQUISITE:
A grade of C or better in MATH 165, appropriate score on mathematics
assessment test, or consent of department.
For computation of tuition, this course is equivalent to five semester
hours. Five hours each week. 4 semester hours
MATH 171 Calculus for Life Sciences II
A continuation of MATH 170; intended primarily for students
of the life sciences. Topics include:
integration, partial derivatives, systems of linear equations, normal and
binomial distributions, sampling distributions, an introduction to differential
equations, and discrete dynamical systems. Alongside the mathematical concepts
will be applications to the life sciences. Not intended for students of the
physical sciences, engineering, or mathematics. PREREQUISITE: A grade of C or better in MATH 170 or MATH
181. Assessment levels: ENGL 101/101A,
READ 120. For computation of tuition,
this course is equivalent to five semester hours. Five hours each week. 4 semester hours. NOTE: MATH 171 is NOT a substitute for MATH
182 (Calculus II).
Additional information:
If someone takes MATH171 and then wanted to take a higher
class they should talk with the Math department. They modeled this after College Park which
has the same policy. As for
transferability it should have direct transferability to College park as
MATH140 and MATH141 respectively. Most
other schools do not have this class yet. Also, the course was designed to
match the calculus for life science (MA 130)
majors at College Park and for a proposed 2 + 2 agreement between UMBC
and Germantown MC Biotech degree. ARTSYS
shows other schools as to be determined.

Herb Block Scholarship Foundation - Outside Scholarship Opportunity for DACA and MD Dreamers
Good afternoon,
The Herb Block Scholarship Foundation Board recently approved to include DACA and MD Dreamers applicants to their scholarship selection. At MC, we have over 100 students already benefiting from their scholarship support. In order to be consider, students must complete the Herb Block Online Scholarship Application, then a committee will review the pool of applicants, select the recipients, and then they will be asked to provide income information, etc... While the application process is long, if selected it will help them with their educational expenses at Montgomery College.
I will be doing a targeted mailing to the new/current DACA and MD Dreamers that are receiving in-county tuition, have not earned 40 credits after the current spring 2015 semester and are in good academic standing.
Just wanted to share the news with all of you since this is a group of students that is not eligible for much. Please note that this scholarship is only offered to the Community College of the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia Community College, Prince George’s Community College and Montgomery College.
Let me know if you have any questions and below is the link for your reference.

Subject: FW: CMAP 120 no longer for RADT
Importance: High
Please let our counselors know that CMAP 120 is now eliminated for RADT as of Summer, 2015!
Best.
Maureen
1) The Rad Tech program just very recently was approved for the curriculum change highlighted below. This change was necessitated to maintain compliance to the new State Bill 720 which approved a waiver that Rad Tech programs in the state of Maryland may have a 66-69 credit curriculum (versus the new mandate of a 60 credit associate degree requirement)
The change to the curriculum is as such (and IS NOT in the catalog yet but I was advised it was effective by summer session I)
The program dropped the CMAP 120 requirement as part of the gen ed’s of the program and replaced it with BIOL 150 which was has always been required but was hidden. This change did not actually drop the credits for this program so two RADT courses dropped in credit. RADT 206 and 207 went from three to two credits each. The RAD TECH program is now a 69 credit program vs the 70 credit (74 with BIOL 150) program .
2) Please advise students to consider taking the following gen ed classes first: BIOL 150, BIOL 212, 213 and HINM 115. These particular classes place a student in the top tier of priority placement for consideration of the acceptance into the program
3) The program does NOT advise students to take all the gen eds before applying to the program. Please pass this on to your part timers. Many students come to me indicating they were advised that all gen ed courses must be completed before they apply to the RT program. While this is an ideal situation- it is not required for submitting an application-especially if the student is on scholarship or financial aid as RADT courses by themselves each semester DO NOT have enough credits to satisfy a full time status. Taking speech, Psychology, ENGL 102 are classes to consider taking while in the program if the student needs to have a full time status. If a student has completed all the gen eds, the program does offer independent study courses between 1-4 credits to make up the difference in credits.
4) Please consider bookmarking the Rad Tech web page-I keep this up to date with changes. The curriculum changes noted are already on the web page on this specific link: http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/EDU/Department.aspx?id=12128. The link can be accessed at this main link for the RT program www.montgomerycollege.edu/rt
Thanks for all you do.

Counselor Recommendation Forms for Students Transferring to UM
Transfer applicants: Please note that you are strongly encouraged to submit a letter of recommendation. If you wish to do so, you may use this form and place the name of your current institution in the "High School Name" field.
So in summary, students may be requesting you to complete a counselor recommendation form for UM. The student should place “Montgomery College” in the “High School Name” field also as the counselor you need only provide information that is relevant to the transfer applicant. Please remember the letters of recommendation are not required but is an option for students who would like to provide them. I will pass along any further information or details regarding this development.
