New Accounting AAS (2026-2027 Catalog)

The College recently received approval from MHEC to offer the new accounting AAS! The AAS aligns with COMAR’s CPA requirements and reflects current industry and professional standards across three primary pathways: corporate, government, and public accounting.

The accounting AAS is intended for students seeking immediate entry into the workforce rather than a transfer pathway or preparation for traditional public accounting careers. Students seeking those options are better served by the business AA. Credits earned in the existing accounting certificate apply toward the new accounting AAS.

To learn more, review the accounting AAS catalog page, the accounting program page, or the attached MHEC proposal and approval letter. If you have questions about the program, please contact Dr. Kathryn Klose.

Accounting Scholars Development Program (Summer Residential Program for Community College Students)

Please see the below opportunity for the Accounting Scholars Development Program (ASDP) that is open for community college business students. Please feel free to distribute to your students and your networks.

ASDP is a one-week on-campus residency program that exposes underrepresented minority community college students to the accounting profession. Throughout the week, scholars participate in focused, challenging, and interactive sessions that discuss leadership style, organizational culture, personal branding, and successfully navigating transitions. Scholars interact closely with faculty and students to understand the rigor of the accounting curriculum and demystify the transfer process to a four-year institution while emphasizing the CPA exam. Networking and mentoring opportunities are crucial components of site visits where professionals address how their academic work prepared them to become critical thinkers who resolve real-world problems.

Accounting

Existing declarants (those who had selected 301 prior to its deletion in Spring 2015) have 10 years to complete the AAS.  None of the courses are gone.  Just the AAS.

Here is standard language we use in Accounting syllabi vis-a-vie choice of majors:

A.            Recommended Curricula for Business Majors

Students who wish to transfer to four-year colleges and universities, and ultimately earn a bachelor’s degree should pursue the Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree in Business, which is designed to transfer to most four-year institutions in Maryland.  A description of the program, and a four-semester outline, is available at http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/EDU/Plain.aspx?id=12414.  Students are not encouraged to pursue the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Accounting, even if they intend to pursue a bachelor’s degree in accounting.  The A.A.S. program has been deleted from the Montgomery College catalog, and likely does not transfer to four-year colleges and universities.  If you designated the Accounting A.A.S. as your major prior to the deletion of the program, please change your program of study to the Business A.A. (additional information may be found at http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/EDU/department2.aspx?id=21507).

A.         Recommended Curricula for Students Holding Bachelor’s Degrees

Students who presently hold a bachelor’s degree (or higher) from a four-year college or university, and who ultimately desire to sit for the CPA exam, should pursue the Certificate in Accounting at Montgomery College.  The Certificate recognizes successful completion of a sequence of courses that focus on the development of specific technical skills in accounting.  In general, students are not encouraged to pursue the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Accounting, even if they intend to pursue professional certification (such as a C.P.A).  The A.A.S. program requires completion of more than 24 credits in general education (non-accounting) coursework which holders of four-year degrees have already completed, and all accounting-specific coursework associated with the A.A.S. in Accounting is completed through the Certificate program.  If you have mistakenly designated the Accounting A.A.S. as your major, please change your program of study to the Accounting Certificate. (additional information may be found at http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/EDU/department2.aspx?id=21507).
