UM Chemistry Course Sequence

UM’s Chemistry sequence is unusual as they go from 1) Principles I to 2) Organic I to 3) Organic II and then 4) back to an advanced Principles II.

UM CHEMISTRY COURSE Sequence

MC CHEMISTRY COURSE Equivalent

CHEM131 General Chemistry I  3 cr.  and
CHEM132 General Chemistry I Lab 1 cr.

CHEM 131 Principles of Chem I – 4 cr.

CHEM231 Organic Chemistry I  3 cr. and CHEM232 Organic Chemistry I Lab 1 cr.

CHEM 203 Organic Chemistry I – 5 cr.

CHEM241 Organic Chemistry II 3 cr.  and CHEM242 Organic Chemistry II Lab 1. Cr.

CHEM 204 Organic Chemistry II – 5 cr.

CHEM271 Gen Chem & Energetics 2 cr.

= CHEM 132 Prin of Chem II – 4 cr. only after completion of a CHEM 272 Bioanalytical Chem Laboratory, 2 cr.

CHEM272 Bioanalytical Chem Lab 2 cr.

Previously no equivalent at MC; students take UM’s CHEM272 Bioanalytical Chem Lab 2 cr. by itself after transfer to UM to then have MC’s CHEM 132 Prin of Chem II accepted.

You can see the an example of this semester-by-semester sequence in the UM Biological Science – Cell Biology & Genetics Four Year Plan:  https://static1.squarespace.com/static/530b693ce4b01ddda83c8078/t/5d65785144756300019defcd/1566931025231/CEBG_4yp_GenEd_May2018.pdf

View all UM Four Year Plans here:  https://www.4yearplans.umd.edu/

MC is “experimenting” with offering one section of CHEM 272 here at Montgomery College this Spring ‘22 for students to be able to finish CHEM 272 prior to transfer, however, note in the MC Course Description that this class has a pre or co-req of CHEM 204 Organic II –

Depending on a student’s major and career goal, some may decide to take just CHEM 131 Prin of Chem I at MC and then transfer to UM to start taking Organic Chem I and the remaining CHEM classes at UM.  Some students interested in pre-med or pre-dental will decide to take all 200-level science classes at UM so that they can qualify for UM’s Committee Letter of Recommendation for pre-professional schools by the end of their junior year.  This letter requires that students take 6 Laboratory sciences/24 credits at UM.  The disadvantage, of course, is that students usually need to transfer before finishing 60 credits at MC so that they can start the UM chem sequence after completing just CHEM 131 at MC.

This MC Transfer Pre-Med/Pre-Dental Advising article https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/counseling-and-advising/transfer-resources/premedpredentaltransferadvisingpage.pdf on the Transfer Resources for Counselors and Advisors page goes into depth about the UM Committee Letter of Recommendation and also discusses the idea of taking Organic Chem at the university-level at ANY transfer school.  It is a tough decision for students to have to make.

In the case of the student you are advising (Dietetics and Food Science https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/counseling-and-advising/transfer-resources/dieteticsfoodsciencenutritionmajorsmctoumtransfer4yrplan.pdf ), MC does offer all of the other courses needed for this major so staying at MC and finishing our Principles 1 & 2 and then MC’s Organic I & II, then taking CHEM 272 by itself after Organic Chem either at MC or at UM after transfer keeps a student in line to meet UM’s unique Chemistry Sequence.

Transfer for ENGL 103 to UM

 Info. from Anne:

The transfer info from Leslie Lindeman looks correct, UM accepts either ENGL 102 and 103 as fulfilling the FSAW Freshman “Academic Writing” requirement, and actually, neither ENGL 102 or ENGL 103 are considered direct equivalents of their ENGL 101, they just accept one of those courses and mark off the FSAW Academic Writing requirement as fulfilled, and over the years, students have successfully been able to take the second junior-level “PW” Professional Writing requirement with just the “FSAW completed” on their transcripts as the prerequisite.

When a student transfers MC ENGL 102 to UM, it shows up with no direct equivalent on the UM Transcript, just the FSAW note.  I am attaching a sample student’s Testudo Transcript so you can see what it looks like, and this is also how ENGL 103 would be noted.

Info from Justin:

I received the following information from Leslie Lindeman, UMD’s Pre-Transfer Advisor for MC. This should clarify the issue, but please let me know if you have other questions/concerns about the transfer of ENGL103. I’m going to dig deeper into if it satisfies prerequisites for upper-level non English or Writing courses.

I’ll work on getting her suggested changes updated on our website.

Info. from Leslie Lindeman

Hi Justin,

Thank you for your message!  I just confirmed with UMD's Assistant Director of English, Karen Lewis, that both ENGL102 and ENGL103 from MC are accepted at UMD to satisfy the Fundamental Studies - Academic Writing (FSAW) general education requirement.  These transfer credit evaluations are valid through summer session II of 2026.  Students may take either course to satisfy the requirement.  Students who took ENGL103 at MC would be permitted to go onto upper-level English and writing courses at UMD without issue.

database.jpg

So, it looks like an update needs to be made to the UMD section of this webpage: https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/transfer/agreements-and-information/by-institution.html#list.  Here are my recommendations regarding ENGL and some other thoughts.

Subject: RE: Change for RADT in terms of minimum requirements and grade

For RADT minimum courses to apply, students must earn a C or better.

It will show up on the new HS application which is not yet posted. Does NOT apply to priority courses.

Also RADT will begin summer classes June 6.

DMS will start right after memorial day.

This is because the RADT classes are 10 weeks in the summer and DMS is 8 weeks.

REMINDER - Extended Winter 21/22 Max Hours

 Good evening,

Please see the email below.  Since Winter Session registration is open and Advising Day is coming up, I wanted to remind you all of this change that is still in place.  Students can take up to 6 hours in Extended Winter without permission.

Be well,

Marcus

****

4.4 – Academic Coursework Load

  1. Maximum Load in Winter Sessions including Overlapping Sessions

Students who are not on Academic Suspension (AR 7.4) may enroll in no more than 4 credit hours during one winter session, not to exceed 8 credit hours across winter sessions. Exceptions may be made for students in Good Academic Standing (AR 7.1) with the permission of Dean of Student Affairs.

During remote operations, students may enroll in no more than 6 hours in the 5-week, extended winter session. Exceptions may be made for students in Good Academic Standing (AR 7.1) with the permission of the Dean of Student Affairs.

Subject: Extended Winter Max Hours Updated in Banner

Good morning Counseling Discipline, Raptor Central, and Records and Registration,

As many of you already know, Academic Regulation 4.4 – Academic Coursework Load was recently updated through the Academic Regulations and Standards Committee and approved by Dr. Pollard.  In particular, while there are no credit courses offered during the three-week, winter session (remote operations), the hours in the five-week extended winter were increased to 6 hours; see below.

Now, students who are not already enrolled can register for up to 6 hours in the extended winter session.  SIS is working with IT to have the hours for those already registered in extended winter updated to 6 hours so they can add an additional course if necessary.  I’ll follow up on that once I know more on that group of students.

Marcus

Curriculum and Advising Worksheet - Fall 2021 Updates

 Counseling Discipline,

I wanted to thank everyone for their patience and understanding as I attempt to complete the updates to the Advising Worksheets.

This has been a particularly difficult summer and Fall revision cycle as we prepare for the Fall 2022 launch of Degree Works which will eventually lead to the sunsetting of CAPP and the Advising Worksheets.

Key Points:

  • Advising Worksheets for any Associates degree that changed for the 2021-2022 catalog year have been updated (date, July 2021).
  • All Certificate Advising Worksheets have been updated (date, July 2021).
  • All Associates degree Advising Worksheets that have not changed from last catalog year to 2021-2022 are still good to use while I continue to update the catalog year at the top.
  • The 2015-2016 catalog is currently the earliest active catalog year.  Any student that wants to graduate with an earlier catalog year must complete an appeal.
  • The 2019-2020 Advising Worksheets (in archived area at the bottom of the index page) are the last to feature the two and four letter course designations.

New Programs:

Terminology:

Statewide Program: The Maryland Higher Education Commission designates some community college programs as statewide programs. Students may enroll in any of these programs at the same rates as in-county residents if a particular program is not offered by the local community college or if the student cannot enroll due to an enrollment limit. These programs are subject to change; apply at the admissions office of each school.

Suspension:  A program that is suspended must remain in the college catalog to ensure that students that are enrolled in the program can receive federal financial aid and graduate from the program.  Programs can only have suspended status for a total of three years.  New students may not enroll in suspended programs.  Many suspended programs are in the process of being replaced by programs that are awaiting Board of Trustees and MHEC approval.

Deleted: A program that is deleted is no longer available to earn a degree/certificate in, even if the student enrolled in the program in the past seven years.  The program has been completely removed from the college curriculum and a student registered for deleted programs must select a new program major.

I appreciate everyone’s help in maintaining the accuracy of the Advising Worksheets and thank you in advance for emailing me any issues.

Sincerely,

PACE is Back - Fall 2021

Hi Chairs,

We managed to figure out a way to test students for the ENGL101+011 PACE program and are currently placing students into PACE sections.

If you remember, PACE allows IERW002 students to take a PACE section of ENGL101+011 based on their reading skills.

  • We collect a writing sample through the remote placement process. Students who select IERW002, place into it, and submit a PACE-level writing sample are then allowed to take a reading test.
  • The remote placement advisors send students this info with a link to the test. If they score 80% or above, they can take one of our PACE sections.

This doesn't mean that they are truly credit-level students; it means that they wrote enough and passed a reading test that allows them to take a special section of ENGL101+011 that is smaller than usual and has an in-class coach an hour a week who works with them.

Below is the email I send students (from the PACE email) with specific instructions for registering for PACE sections and contacting me (pace@montgomerycollege.edu).

Could you please get the word out that PACE is back and to be on the lookout for my email? If a student shows them the email, please have people go over the email and show them the list of sections they can choose from. Please do not give overrides because they can register for non-PACE sections, and I'm tracking numbers etc.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. And thanks for your support.

Best,

Miriam

Academic Regs Update - Re: Article 7 - Academic Standing

Last academic year the Academic Regulations and Standards Committee made recommendations to update Article 7 – Academic Standing (pg. 30).  In particular, the recommended changes were to move from “attempted hours” to “accumulated Grade Point Average (GPA) hours” in determining academic standing for Academic Alert, Academic Restriction, and Academic Suspension in particular.  The hope is that this change will help address the challenge we have had with transfer, AELP, and other students needing their academic standing reviewed and updated.  This change was approved by the President’s Executive Cabinet (PEC) over the summer and will be in place for students starting this fall.  Meaning, students enrolled in the fall and thereafter are subject to this change.  The SIS Team plans to have this updated in Banner very soon.  Please see below for the changes, which are highlighted in yellow.

With the use of GPA Hours in determining academic standing, the Academic Regulations and Standards Committee also updated Academic Regulation (AR) 6.7 – Grade Point Averages (GPA).  In that section GPA Hours are defined as well as what goes into computing the GPA is better described.

Lastly, the SIS Team will implement a new academic standing code in Banner – “GS” for Good Standing – to correspond with “AA” for Academic Alert, “AR” for Academic Restriction, and “AS” for Academic Suspension.  The old Good Standing code, “00”, will be repurposed for “No Standing” for use with new students.

Current Regulation – AY 2021-22

Previous Regulation – AY 2020-21 and before

Good Academic Standing

To remain in good academic standing, all students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.

To remain in good academic standing, all students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.

Academic Alert

A student who has accumulated at least one Grade Point Average (GPA) hour, has a cumulative grade point average below 2.0, and is not on academic restriction or suspension is on academic alert.

A student who has attempted at least one credit and has a cumulative grade point average below 2.0 and is not on academic restriction or suspension is on academic alert.

Academic Restriction

Students who have accumulated at least 12 Grade Point Average (GPA) hours with a cumulative GPA below 1.75 will be placed on academic restriction

Students who have attempted at least 12 credits with a cumulative GPA below 1.75 will be placed on academic restriction

Academic Suspension

Students who have accumulated at least 30 Grade Point Average (GPA) hours and whose GPA falls below 1.25 will be placed on academic suspension.

Students who have attempted at least 30 credits and whose GPA falls below 1.25 will be placed on academic suspension.

Underage Hold - Summer 2021

It is the transcript that verifies that the student actually graduated.  Receipt of this final transcript can be checked in Banner by looking at SOAHSCH.  It will list the date the final transcript was noted in the official file.

UMD - Architecture Transfer Advising

From: Leslie Lindeman <llindema@umd.edu>

Sent: Thursday, July 22, 2021 11:23 AM

Thanks for your email.  Yes, the AAS in Architectural Technology from MC is still the best way to go.  Pre-Transfer Advising recently met with the UMD Director of Student Services for Architecture, Brent Hernandez (bhernand@umd.edu), and he reassured us that students who have the AAS can graduate from UMD in just two more years.  Below are the course equivalencies.

·  MATH150 or 181 Calculus = MATH120 or 140 at UMCP

·  ARCH101 Intro Architecture = satisfies ARCH171

·  ARTT265 and 266 Architecture History = ARCH225 and 226

·  ARCH104 Architectural Graphics + ARCH183 CAD = ARCH200

·  PHYS203 General Physics = PHYS121

·  ARCH103 Building Tech + CMGT100 Construction Methods = ARCH462

·  ARCH200 3D CAD + ARCH202 CAD REVIT = ARCH300

Please let me know if I can provide any more info at this time.  Thank you!

New Resource: Transgender Hotline

Good morning all,

I hope everyone is doing well.  I saw a post from a friend on LinkedIn about the first transgender suicide hotline – Trans Lifeline.  I went to their webpage and it appears they offer additional support beyond crises.  I could just be late to the party here, some of you may already be aware of Trans Lifeline, but I was thinking this might be a great Counseling and Advising resource to have on the web.

Math Foundation - Clarification on Min Grade Required for Graduation

I am going to guess that advisement is for Nursing students at TP/SS as a grade of C in math is required to be part of the MC-UMB Nursing Dual Admission program.  And with MD state hospitals requiring a BSN for employment, being admissible to any BSN completion program will require at least a C in a math course.

But for a student in other degrees – a grade of D works for graduation when running the Banner Web Degree evaluation, I have a student’s transcript open and this is how a grade of D in MATH 165 is accepted for the Math Foundation in General Studies STEM:

Total Credits and GPA :

The rule in transfer (as you know J) is that if the major at the MD state four-year institution requires a specific course, then a grade of C or higher is required to accept the transfer course, so for example,

-      The Psychology major @ UMBC requires a statistics - MATH 117, so a C or higher is a must.

-      A Visual Arts major at UMBC requires any Math Foundation, so a grade of D could be accepted according to MD Transfer Policy regarding grades of D in General Education Program courses:

MHEC Transfer Policy – Regarding D Grades, see “Commonly Asked Questions” section

Q: Will grades of "D" be accepted in transfer?

A: "D" grades will be accepted in transfer if the college to which you are applying also accepts a "D" for native students. A "D" grade earned in a general education course that meets a general education requirement at a sending institution, which has designated that course as meeting a general education requirement, will transfer and meet a general education requirement at the receiving institution.

Sometimes MD state transfer institutions have to be reminded of this policy if they reject a grade of D in a Gen Ed area where no specific course is required for the major…

Having said that, there is an exception … it is important to note that UMGC (formerly UMUC) now has a policy that ALL students from ALL transfer institutions must have grades of C or higher for all courses to be accepted.  This seems to contradict MD Transfer Policy but they are firm about it and point to this section in their Admissions information for all incoming transfer students:

Credits from Colleges and Universities -

When the grade earned was at least C, transfer credits from approved two- and four-year colleges and universities may be accepted for courses that apply to the student's curriculum and do not duplicate other courses for which credit has been awarded.  https://www.umgc.edu/transfers-and-credits/transfer-credits/policies.cfm

So – it’s complicated.  When it doubt, repeating a D to improve a GPA for transfer admissions is usually a good idea.

Biotechnology Updates - Lecture/Lab Splits & Starfish Scheduling

Direct Starfish Link to Provide Students for Scheduling with Prof. Kelman:

https://montgomerycollege.starfishsolutions.com/starfish-ops/dl/instructor/serviceCatalog.html?bookmark=connection/779535/schedule

Dear Katie, Marcella, and Kristy,

Can you please notify counselors that BIOT lectures and labs have been split into separate courses, and a student wishing to take lecture and lab will need to register for both? We’re seeing students who are registered for lecture but not lab.

Starting with the F21 semester, BIOT classes have slightly different course titles, numbers, and descriptions. I’ve attached a flyer with the current course numbers, titles, and descriptions.

  • BIOT110 (Intro) does not have a lab. It is a 2-credit course.
  • BIOT120 (Cell culture) is a 2-credit lecture and BIOT121 is a 1-credit lab.
  • BIOT200 (Protein biotech) is a 3-credit lecture and BIOT201 is 1-credit lab.
  • BIOT230 (Immunology) is a 3-credit lecture and BIOT231 is 1-credit lab.
  • BIOT240 (Nucleic acids DNA/RNA) is a 3-credit lecture and BIOT241 is 1-credit lab.

We anticipate that BIOT lectures and labs will be held on-campus in the fall.

Also, a gentle reminder that students interested in biotechnology should speak with me, Lori.Kelman@MontgomeryCollege I have Wed 1-8 pm office hours that can be scheduled in Starfish. I is also available at other times by appointment.
