Suspended Programs - Updated Guidance

A currently enrolled student (for the last three years) asked to change their major to a suspended major.

I have investigated this question and the college’s current interpretation of suspended programs is that only students that were registered in the computer system for a suspended major, at the time the degree or certificate was suspended, may continue on to earn this degree or certificate.

The current catalog language is:

THIS CERTIFICATE IS SUSPENDED EFFECTIVE FALL 2022. NEW STUDENTS MAY NOT BE ADMITTED TO SUSPENDED CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS. STUDENTS ADMITTED PRIOR TO FALL 2022 WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GRADUATE WITH THIS CERTIFICATE AFTER SPRING 2025.

The current definition of “new students” is anyone (new to Montgomery College or currently enrolled at Montgomery College) not registered for a major code at the time of suspension.

Students not enrolled in suspended programs at the time the degree or certificate program was suspended, may not change their major to the suspended  degree or certificate.

Curriculum & Web Resources UPDATE

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to follow-up on my last email starting with some curriculum updates:

  1. As of Fall 2017, Maryland State Law requires an Associate’s degree General Education English composition course be completed with a grade of C- or better. http://mdrules.elaws.us/comar/13b.06.01.03 This is programmed into the CAPP so a student with a “D” in ENGL 102 or ENGL 103 can not use that course to satisfy the English Foundation (ENCF).  There are no minimum grade requirements for any other General Education courses.

  1. The current active catalogs for the 2020-2021 academic year are 2019-2020, 2018-2019, 2017-2016, 2016-2017, 2015-2016, and 2014-2015.  Students may not use any catalog year prior to 2014-2015 to apply for graduation without an academic appeal.

  1. PHYS 010 (used for the DMS program) has been replaced by PHYS 103.  PHYS 103 is designed specifically for DMS students and a few students needing an introduction to PHYS.  It is not designed to be an introduction to PHYS 161 or PHYS 203 (unless recommended by PHYS faculty), is not a General Education Course, and is only covered by federal financial aid as an elective.
Counselor Web Resource Updates:

  1. The Program Advising Guides identified with ENGL and MATH course sequence issues have been updated. I have verified that ENGL and MATH are now being loaded on to those Program Advising Guides.  Please continue to use these guides as the primary resource for advising students.  If you discover a printed out copy of one of the Program Advising Guides with errors, please destroy the copy.

  1. The Advising Worksheets are in the process of being updated.  While these updates occur, the index page https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/counseling-and-advising/advising-worksheets/index.html will be updated every day until the project is completed.
Believe it or not, it has been 7 years since we used 2 letter course designations (AR, EN, MA, etc.).  This means that these designations will drop off the 2020-2021 Advising Worksheets.

I have decided to create a “snapshot” of the last time these designators were used so ALL 2019-2020 Advising worksheets will be available in the archive area so counselors can use them as a reference for the old courses.

Until all the 2020-2021 Advising Worksheets are available, the index will continue to use 2019-2020 Advising Worksheets for programs that have not been updated.  The curriculums with changes for the 2020-2021 academic year have priority and will be updated first.  If you provide new students with the 2019-2020 Advising Worksheet, please let them know that the updated Advising Worksheet for 2020-2021 should be available by the middle of next month.

Thanks everyone for your patience and please continue to email me any issues that you discover that need to be corrected.
