Transfer Advising/MC Gen Ed List

For the first time in many years, courses have been removed from the MC General Education Program.  The link to the Updated General Education List sent to you recently reflects those changes.  You can also see the list of removed courses below in this message.  Counselors and advisers should be using this New Updated 2017-18 Gen Ed List with Transfer Advising Notes when working with ALL students during advising sessions; please do NOT use the older lists when helping students choose classes.
Link:  General Education Course List  Print out and use 2017-18 when working with ALL students regardless of year entered.

The “rule” on Gen Ed is different from the “Seven Year Rule” for Catalog DEGREE requirements.  Students may follow the Degree (Major/Program) Requirements of any MC major for 7 years from the year that they enter MC, but this “7 Year Rule” does NOT apply to General Education.  General Education Courses can only count if the course is labeled as a Gen Ed course during the semester that it is taken.  This means that for yellow highlighted courses listed below, if they are taken next Fall or thereafter, they will not count as a General Education Requirement because they have been removed from the list.

Why? It is partly a technicality:  a course can’t be labeled or carry the Gen Ed “attribute” for some students and not for others depending on the year that a student enrolled.  A course either has a Gen Ed attribute or it doesn’t, and Banner can’t sense a student’s starting date to make the distinction.  The other reason is that the Gen Ed Committee reviewed each course carefully and based decisions on a combination of content, assignments, transferability, etc.  Many disciplines voluntarily decided not to offer courses again as Gen Ed so the decision may also have been discipline-based (MATH 182, some ENGL & HIST, upper-level languages, etc.).

What happens if a student keeps following their earlier Gen Ed list and takes a course in error?  Students will probably be able to file a Gen Ed Appeal to use the course.

Here are the affected courses- removed from General Education for Fall 2017 and thereafter:
Gray = not an issue

I am sending this out now simply because we are seeing students daily now that Registration is open.  This is an ADVISING message and not intended as an official communication from the General Education Committee.

Summer 2017 - AELP Redesign Credit Overload Exception

Please see the email below.  Since the AELP courses will phase out this summer, so some students may elect to take 2 classes in one or both summer sessions, exceeding the maximum academic load.  For those students requesting this exception, please refer those students to the AELP department chairs or designees.  AELP department chairs or designees will email their campus registrars to increase the max hours for our students this summer. They will copy Ernest on the emails.

If you have any questions, please follow-up with the AELP chairs.

Updated Gen Ed Course Substitution Process

the Gen Ed Course Substitution Process has been updated, and the new procedures and application are posted on the Gen Ed Committee site, located under "Central Committees" on the  MyMC home page.  For your convenience and information, I'm attaching the updated document here, as well.

Math ACCUPLACER/Courses & ELAP Guidelines

Students who place at the ELAR 980/AELR 930 level or have completed ELAR 970/ALER 920 can take the Math ACCUPLACER for the first time without a referral. The Assessment Center will still process any referrals from a counselor/advisors as normal, deferring to your judgement, if the student doesn't meet these guidelines.

Also, students in AELW940/ELAI990 will continue to be eligible for any Math course they test in to.

NEW Online Academic Overload Process & Form

I hope that this email finds you well.  With summer registration underway and fall registration ramping up, I wanted to update you all on the NEW online process for students requesting to exceed the maximum academic load or what we’ve called Academic Overload.  This process is set up to mirror that of the Academic Suspension Appeal, but I’ll break down the process in a moment.  This request is essentially an appeal of Academic Regulation 9.63.  In short,

·         The maximum load in a fall or spring semester is 18 hours.  Counseling faculty can approve students to take 19 to 21 hours.  Students who would like 22+ hours need to seek permission from the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs.
·         The maximum load in one summer session is 7 hours or a total of 10 hours in overlapping summer sessions.  Students who would like to take 8+ hours need to seek permission from the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs.
·         The maximum load in a winter session is 4 hours.  Students who would like to take 5+ hours need to seek permission from the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs.

Ideally, a student meets with a counselor for academic planning and if the student would like to exceed the maximum academic load they would have that conversation and a referral would be made in Starfish; see attached.  It would be helpful if counseling faculty would provide any comments in support or disapproval of the student’s request in Starfish.  That information would assist the deans and associate deans in the decision making process.  The Starfish referral triggers an email to the student with a link to the online form:  https://cm.maxient.com/reportingform.php?MontgomeryCollege&layout_id=5; see attached.  Again, this mirrors the Academic Suspension Appeal.  The student would complete the form, including when they met with a counselor, the semester in which they are requesting academic overload, a statement explaining the basis for the request and any supporting documentation (e.g., non-MC transcript, Academic Plan, etc.).  The campus the student selects determines how the appeal will be routed through Maxient.

As you know, the deans updated AR 9.63 and that was sent to Academic Regs, was tweaked some and finally approved.  It is my understanding that the approved changes (see below) are with Dr. Rai’s office.  At the moment the online form reflects the language of AR 9.63 as it is currently available online, with some edits noted with brackets [ ] to make it somewhat consistent.  Hopefully once approved by Dr. Rai’s office I can quickly edit the form, which is the beauty of an online form.  Moreover, hopefully this makes the process easier for all involved, but also aides in tracking these requests.

Please share this information with counselors and anyone else you think should be in the know.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Regards,

Marcus

ESL Accuplacer - Section Retakes

Here is the ruling direct from Usha Venkatesh: students cannot retake part of the ESL Accuplacer. A student who wishes to retest in one of the skills, such as Speaking/Listening only, needs to go to the AELP department in Macklin Tower 512. AELP can issue a diagnostic test in the particular skill.

Summer 2017 - Payment Deadlines

As you know, summer registration opened today and it is critical that students pay their tuition via MyMC (in full or enroll in a tuition installment plan) or have a financial aid class reservation hold by the payment deadlines to avoid being dropped from their classes. The payment deadlines for Summer I and Summer II, 2017 have been posted online. You can find them by following this link: http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/paying-for-college/payments/summer-2017-combined-payment-deadlines.pdf
