As we approach summer scheduling, I wanted to put something out there from our area for the counselors.
1) There is a new math advising email address that we are trying to use for pre-requisite overrides. Students often reach out to all three dept. chairs separately and we find out after we go into Banner that someone has already assisted the student. The address is mathadvising@montgomerycollege.edu
2) Nafeesa Azizi (Nafeesa.azizi@montgomerycollege.edu) and Lori Christy (lori.christy@montgomerycollege.edu from TPSS) are our Instructional Lab Coordinators collegewide. Questions regarding placement test can be directed to them. They can extend expired ALEKS accounts for students who have not taken all of their attempts (remember they have to take it at least twice for it to count) and can provide help with math content in ALEKS prep module, which I highly recommend for students who have scored low on the diagnostic.
3) We would like to encourage students to take the placement test if they may have an interest on the STEM side of the math courses. APPM/G only gets these students into MATH 050 and we are trying to avoid having these students take MATH 050 if they are capable, especially if they have had courses higher than Algebra 2. At the same time, the current placement test isn’t proctored and we have seen students get in over their heads, so it may be good to ask them about previous math experience when they score really high.
4) If someone needs a 3rd attempt at MATH 050, a conversation should be had with the student about their major and options.
Thanks,
Darren Smith
