Subject: Launch of new Behavioral Health program

Good morning everyone,

I am reaching out to invite all of you to the launch of our new AA in Behavioral Health.  This program is under the department of Health Enhancement, Exercise Science and Physical Education with Elizabeth Ridings as the chair and Maureen Edwards as the program coordinator.  I will be hosting a power point session followed by q and a.  If you are unable to attend, I am happy to do other sessions for the counselors.  What I have learned over the past 25 years here at MC is that the counselors are out staunchest allies in getting the word out about new programs and identifying students who would be a good fit.  This new AA program replaces the old AAS in Mental Health which has not been updated in a number of years and does not transfer well.  I want to be clear that this is a new program under a different department.  Initially it will be housed at Rockville but my hope is that we grow the program, we will be able to  offer it on all campuses as we have done with Public Health and Community Health.  Please feel free to contact me any time with questions about the new program.  Our paperwork is on the way to MHEC having passed the curriculum committee and the board of trustees.  We hope to offer the first class in this program fall 2021.  Stay tuned for details.  Maureen

Course Repeat - 2nd 7 weeks (Spring 2021)

We may begin to see students who are failing or did not complete a course the 1st 7 weeks and would like to enroll for the same course in the 2nd half of the semester. Here are the instructions from the Registrar how to assist students with the process.

Please direct students to email their campus registrar with the add/drop form.

Registration

https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/admissions-registration/registration-schedule-change-form.pdf

Please remind counselors, for students who are taking a course for the 3rd attempt, they must have the override in Banner. For 4th attempts, they need to complete an Academic Appeal.

Once we receive the form, we can then register the student for the course they want to retake.

Thanks!

Pre-Health Science Advising Notes

Greetings all,

Here it is more helpful information for you as you advise Pre-Health Science students:

1.       Unclear as to when it began, perhaps within 2 years, Marjorie Davis will accept the second AP, Biology 213, if taken within the last five years, in lieu of Biology 228.  This is why in my outgoing email response, I state that students, may or may not, have to take Biology 228.

2.       If you are advising students at UDC/UDCC, be sure to indicate it is the General Microbiology that transfers, not Clinical Microbiology.

3.       As a reminder, students may take any Physics class, with or without lab, for our DMS program.  The one listed is PHYS 103.

4.       In addition, it isn't clear from the DMS advising sheet that HINM 120 can be taken before being accepted into the program.  Once students  have completed HINM 115, the prereq, they may seek permission to register by emailing the professor teaching the course or HINM coordinator, Corinne Smith.

5.       For the HIM degree, note students can take four HINM courses before being accepted into the program:  HINM 115, 116, 120 and 150.  For both HINM 120 and 150, both Biology 130/131 ( or Biology 212 ) and HINM 115 are the prereqs.

Things I thought you should know for today,

Maureen

BIOL150 - Nursing - Is it Required?

Subject: The infamous biology 150

Let's do a little review:

It is stated on the Health sciences application, biology 150 may be needed after biology 212 and 213 transfer.

But when, for example, a PGCC student has taken biology 212, biology 213, and biology 210, which transfers into the college, they are also given credit for biology 101, the intro biology they took there.

This becomes the additional four credit hard science that suffices if needed for graduation.

Marjorie Davis decides this for the Takoma Park Silver Spring campus.

Therefore, the student does not need biology 150.

In other cases, I think I recall Hood or FCC, when a student hasn't had to take an intro biology, and 212/213 transfer:

If they have not taken microbiology, the student still needs biology 150 in order to take 210.

If students are applying to other programs, of which none need biology 210, and, the student has another four credit hard science, i.e. chem 131, Ms. Davis can then decide to use that four credit hard science.

If a four credit hard sciences needed, other than for microbiology, students can then take any from our general education program last.

Doesn't have to be biology 150.

This is my understanding, and it took years to get here. So in fear of whether they needed it or not, students would take it proactively. Otherwise they had a choice in my advising that they could wait and see if the registrar indicated needing it and take it later, because students could still apply without biology 150.

And biology 150 used to be listed on the Health sciences application.
