New MC Course Placement Webpage Launching on Nov. 1

To:                       Counselors, Raptor Central staff, faculty and advisors in the Math, English, ESL, and Chemistry disciplines, General Studies program advisors, ACES advisors, Assessment Center staff

From:                  Prof. Michael Berman on behalf of the CAPDI (College-wide Appropriate Placement and Developmental Issues) Committee

Subject:            New MC Course Placement Webpage Launching on Nov. 1

Date:                   October 22, 2024

As part of a CAPDI (College-wide Appropriate Placement and Developmental Issues) Committee initiative, MC’s “placement webpage” – a key page in MC’s new student onboarding process – will be changing on or about Friday, Nov. 1. This brief memo is to inform you of this forthcoming change, why it’s happening, and what you can do to help.

Raptor Central informed CAPDI last AY that incoming students have found the information on this page to be dense, complex, and often consisting of long, jargony sentences. Consequently, we lose many new/prospective students at this point in the onboarding process. That is, prospective students often do not start or complete course placement processes at MC.

Consequently, the CAPDI Committee has endeavored to rethink this page and has created an interactive, question-by-question tour of MC’s placement processes and of various means of “alternative placement.” As noted, this new page will go live on or about Nov. 1.

To find it, simply type “placement” in the search bar and click on the first option (the “May we recommend” option) after Nov. 1.

Not only is this is a new approach to presenting this information, but we have designed and built this new set of interactive “Course Placement Guides” ourselves. As such, we will be moving forward in an iterative fashion: once the new page launches, we will actively gather feedback over the course of this academic year and will make additional changes and improvements on an ongoing basis. With that in mind, as you work with this page and, more importantly, observe students working with it, we encourage you to send any comments, questions, or suggestions to michael.berman@montgomerycollege.edu.

Kindly forward this memo to members of your team and others in the MC community whom you think would benefit from this information. Thank you.

Transfer Advising for UMD – Arts & Humanities Majors & the Global Engagement (GE) Requirement

Transfer Advising for UMD – Arts & Humanities Majors

MC students planning to transfer as Arts and Humanities Majors at the University of Maryland - UMD – College Park and Shady Grove Campuses need to know about the Global Engagement Requirement.

What is the UMD Arts and Humanities Global Engagement (GE) Requirement?  All options to complete it (shown below the Majors list) require at least a full year of elementary-level knowledge of a single World Language.  Students can either complete the Global Engagement requirement while at MC; start requirements at MC prior to transfer; or elect to complete it entirely after transfer.

The information below is presented in the attached PDF Transfer Advising Page for Arts and Humanities Majors at UMD which you can distribute to students.

MONTGOMERY COLLEGE – TRANSFER ADVISING FOR UMD – University of Maryland ARTS AND HUMANITIES MAJORS

Here is the List of UMD Arts & Humanities Majors ( ARHU ):

THE UMD ARTS AND HUMANITIES GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT REQUIREMENT for Arts and Humanities Majors:

Not all majors at UMD require the study of a World Language; however, all UMD Arts and Humanities Majors shown above must complete the UMD Arts and Humanities Global Engagement Requirement.

There are three options for students to complete the UMD Arts & Humanities (ARHU) Global Engagement (GE) Requirement:

  1. Complete a single World Language through a designated level (typically the 202 or 203 Intermediate II-level for most languages);
  2. study abroad (can only be fulfilled after transfer to UMD); or
  3. develop an independent experience arranged after transfer.
    [Options 2 & 3 require a demonstrated language proficiency through the elementary level (101 & 102) of a single
    language.]

List of languages that fulfill the UMD ARHU Majors Global Engagement Requirement:  https://arhuserv.umd.edu/sites/default/files/2020-11/ge-fola-option.pdf   This list also describes options for students who have native/heritage proficiency in a language not included on the UMD ARHU Language List.

These Montgomery College World Language courses will complete the Global Engagement requirement:

Students with previous World Language knowledge of French, Chinese, German, Italian, Russian or Spanish may take a free Language Placement Test at Montgomery College to determine a placement level. Scroll to “Language Placement Testing” for information:  www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/programs/world-languages/index.html

Students may need to complete courses of 101 Elem. 1 –>102 Elem. 2 –> 201 Intermediate I to then be eligible to take the Intermediate II levels of CHIN 202; FREN 202, KORA 202, RUSS 202, SPAN 202 at MC.  For students who have previously studied Spanish but do not place into SPAN 102 or higher, MC offers SPAN 103 Intensive Elementary Spanish 4 credits, and after completion, they can either go on to MC’s SPAN 201 & SPAN 202 to complete the GE requirement at MC or take SPAN 203 Intensive Intermediate Spanish at UMD after transfer.  Another option is to complete SPAN 106 Spanish for Heritage Speakers as a prerequisite for SPAN 201 & 202 at MC or SPAN 203 at UMD.

Students may also take the 101 & 102 Elementary I & II levels of any MC World Language and then take the needed Intermediate course at UM after transfer. MC offers the Elementary II or Intermediate I level of these languages and then transfer to finish remaining intermediate level(s) at UMD:  ARAB, GERM, ITAL, JAPN, LATN, PORT.   Consult the ARHU GE List when choosing languages at MC.

Another option to finish the GE Requirement with only two courses at MC is to take ASLP 100 & 110, American Sign Language I & II.  UMD’s College of Arts & Humanities considers the second course, MC’s ASLP 110 American Sign Language ASL II, to be the Intermediate II level of American Sign Language.  No other classes needed after transfer to UMD.

  • UMD will accept AP Advanced Placement Test Credit (scores of 4 or 5 only) for these languages:  AP French Language & Culture; German Lang & Cult; Italian Lang & Cult, Spanish Lang & Culture.  See the List of all accepted AP Credits:  Prior Learning Credit | Office of the University Registrar (umd.edu)

  • List of International Baccalaureate (IB) Language tests accepted by UMD: www.transfercredit.umd.edu/plc.html#ib

  • Please note that UMD does NOT accept CLEP (College Level Examination Program) credits to fulfill the ARHU Global Engagement Requirement:  https://registrar.umd.edu/sites/default/files/2024-02/clep-gen-ed-2023.pdf   New as of 2023, UMD will accept CLEP credits for Language Exams, but only as Lower Level Electives, not as specific Language courses.

  • Can I wait to finish the Global Engagement Language courses at UMD?  Yes, UMD Main Campus offers a two-course sequence for these languages:  FREN/GERM/ITAL/SPAN 103 Intensive Elementary Level 1 – 4 cr. and FREN/etc. 203) Intensive Intermediate Level Two courses, 4 credits each, to complete the Global Engagement requirement in two semesters – but note that these courses are fast-paced.  UMD’s 103 Intensive Elementary Level I course covers a full year of language instruction in one semester.  Students take UMD’s WLPT World Language Placement Test to enroll in a language course (must be admitted to UM in order to take the WLPT).  Shady Grove Campus does not offer UMD World Language courses, students must travel to Main Campus.  You may decide to continue to take language courses at MC after transferring to UMD; however, Financial Aid may not cover the classes if you wait to continue taking language classes at MC after enrolling at UMD because students can only receive Financial Aid at one school in a single semester, not both UMD and MC.

OTHER GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT APPLYING TO UMD

Apply to UMD through MTAP, the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program

·         What is the MTAP Guarantee of Admission? Students with 30+ transferable college credits earned after graduation from high school with grades showing as completed on their MC transcript at the time that they apply for an Early Action Transfer Admission to UMD (must include ENGL 102 or 103 and a college-level math) with a 3.0 overall GPA, are guaranteed admission to non-LEP Limited Enrollment Program majors. You MUST apply for transfer admission by the Early Action Transfer Application Deadline of March 1 for a fall transfer or August 1 for a spring transfer. Details: go.umd.edu.mtap   Enroll in MTAP between Sept. 20 – Nov. 1 or April 20 – June 1.

·         Does MTAP guarantee admission to LEPs?  MTAP does not guarantee admission to LEPs (competitive majors including COMM), but MC recommends that you enroll in MTAP to keep your admission possibilities open. Some LEPs will admit you AFTER you are accepted by UMD if you are finishing the LEP Gateway courses in your last semester at MC, so being in MTAP will help you get admitted to the University first.

When do I apply to transfer to UMD?

UMD admits students in both Fall and Spring at Main Campus and in both semesters to the ARHU major of Communication at Shady Grove.  For best chances of admission to UMD, fill out a Transfer Application by an Early Action deadline of either March 1 for a Fall transfer (decision sent in late October) or August 1 for a Spring transfer (decision sent in late April).  If you apply by the regular deadlines of June 1 for Fall or Nov. 1 for Spring, admissions decisions are sent out in July for Fall and the end of December or early January for Spring.  More information about applying for transfer: https://admissions.umd.edu/apply/transfer-applicants

How do I check to see whether I am meeting the requirements for an MC associate’s degree?

You can print out a Degree Evaluation in MyMC, look under Student Services for the “Degree Evaluation” link.  This provides a “Degree Works” Plan showing how your current courses apply to a specific degree and indicates what courses may remain to finish a degree.  A helpful feature of Degree Works is that you can also try different majors under the “What If” function to see if another major is a better fit for you.
