Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Update

Anniet Glenn, in her PTA info session Monday of this week indicated:

For this application deadline of March 1 2024 only, there is now ‘wiggle room’ for one of the 24-26 seats:

Students who are in progress of courses listed should still apply if interested.

As the program starts in the Fall, there is time to wait until mid-May to see grades.

And therefore, still be accepted.

Of course, having BIOL 213 done is ideal as it is the core science piece on TEAS.

For this program, BIOL 150 is a minimum course, and BIOL 212 is priority. Noting:  BIOL 213 is not a requirement.

All we can say is ‘go for it’, if students want to take TEAS with less preparation nor being done with BIOLs.

Yes, we can continue the 5 year.

Hi Anniet,

Nancy Greenawald used to waive the 5 year rule re:  BIOL 212, if students possess a prior degree.

Is this something you want to continue?

Otherwise, they have to take BIOL 228, a 3 credit review of AP, no lab, in lieu of re-taking the course.

Or if they really wanted to, they can re-take the course for 4 credits.

Stay well and sane in my absence,

Maureen

PTA Requirements - Clarification

From: Davis, Marjorie M <marjorie.davis@montgomerycollege.edu>
Sent: Friday, February 14, 2020 11:02 AM
  1.  Is this still the case that students with transfer credit for BIOL212 may take a four-credit Biology in place of BIOL150? Yes
  2.  If so, can the student assume his application for admission will be reviewed without the BIOL150? Yes
  3.  If the student applies for graduation, is the system set up to look for any four credit BIOL course? Student will need a course substitution.

Students need to have two, 4-credit college level biology courses (3 lecture hours and 1 lab hour). BIOL 150 and BIOL 212 are the recommended combination. However, when students transfer in other credit sequences the admissions office will accept the equivalent of BIOL 212 and BIOL 213.

Health Sciences Updates - Fall 2018

  • NOVA’s BIO 141/142 will now be accepted at MC: Biology 141 and 142 are now deemed to be fully transferable to MC as our BIOL 212 and 213.
  • Carolyn McAllister accepted another position (Reading & English Faculty) within the college, which will begin on October 1, 2018. Therefore, my last day in Health Sciences as the Pre-Admission Retention Coordinator will be 9/28/18.
  • There are programs where Program Coordinators allow students to take courses in their curricula before being accepted:
  • Nancy Greenawald’s PTA program: She allows students to take PHTH 101 if room. Students need to seek permission from her.
  • Corinne Smith’s Medical Coder/HIM programs: Once either HINM 115 or BIOL 130/131 ( or BIOL 150/212 ) is taken, they may seek permission from her to take HINM 120, once students have met the pre reqs of both HINM 115 and BIOL 130/131: They may seek permission to take HINM 150.
  • Linda Zanin’s DMS program also contains HINM 120. Students need to seek permission from the professor teaching the course.
  • Natalie Maiden is no longer the advisor for Mental Health. No full time position is available at this time; the position is frozen.

For new students coming in I would suggest the General Studies Social Sciences, Administration, and Health (SSAH) AA: 611C for those looking to do counselling, social work, and for those looking to be a psychiatrist, or psychologist I would suggest the General Studies STEM A.A: 611B.

Those already enrolled will have their courses offered. Course availability will be dependent upon enrollment numbers. Last semester there were only four enrollments for MHTH 101 and it had to be cancelled.

Health Science Program Fact Sheet

It is important for students to attend an information session to receive the most current information if possible, but not required.  Students may contact each department’s Administrative Aides to have the information packet mailed if no information session offered at the time they are interested.

ADMISSION FOR ALL PROGRAMS:
  • Jennifer Nunez is no longer a point person for Health Sciences Admissions (still done by Admissions)
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 is required of the most recent 24 credits which is calculated by Admissions, not counselors.
  • Being finished with the priority courses by the Fall of the preceding semester as noted on the Health Sciences application and passing the TEAS test are the qualifiers.   Review the ‘Health Sciences application’ Admission Requirements by typing into the search box of our website.
  • The highest TEAS scores considered first.
  • TEAS test expiration date has been expanded to 2 years.

HEALTH SCIENCE STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:
  • ***HEALTH INSURANCE IS NOW REQUIRED FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN THESE PROGRAMS. ***
  • Criminal background checks and drug testing:
    • In accordance with Montgomery College’s Health Sciences Program Protocol:  This is required by facilities that are the sites for the clinical learning experience of nursing and health sciences students.
    • All outside Background or Drug Checks submitted will not be accepted.  Students should not apply for any Background or Drug Checks prior to receiving instructions during their Student Orientation, where they will receive detailed information.
    • Conducted by an independent, third party outside agency at the student’s expense, coordinated through the College, and must be completed before a nursing and health sciences student can be placed at a facility for his or her clinical experience.
    • Results of drug tests and criminal background checks are available for review by designated personnel in each clinical facility and the clinical facility has the right to refuse clinical placement for students based on such review.
    •  The College does not receive the results of these checks. Drug test and background checks obtained from other sources, including by the students on their own, are not sufficient nor will they be accepted for this purpose.
  • Grading scale is higher:   Students must have a score of 75 or higher for most programs. *For RT, scores no lower than 78.

NURSING
  • Out of approximately 250-300 applicants, *NEW* 128 spaces for Fall and for Spring.  NURS accepts 128 students twice a year, an increase.
    • It all depends on how many applicants allowed, therefore the numbers will be variable.  Fall has the most number of applicants, therefore Spring has a better chance.
  •  Another 20 students are put on a ‘stand by’ list not a waiting list. Orientations are done, get health inoculations done.  They are prepped and ready to go as priority for the next semester.
  • In order to take BIOL 228, Pathophysiology, in lieu of re-taking 8 credits of A & P due to five year rule, contact NURS Chairperson:  dianna.matthews@montgomerycollege.edu.  This is:  Once the A & P’s transfer into the school first, if taken outside of MC.
  • NURS DUAL ENROLLMENT (  ’3 + 1’ )  announcement of 3 years at MC + one year at USG ( UB ) begins Fall, 2016.  Those accepted into the NURS program Fall, 2016 will be given the information, details to follow.**
  • If a student has taken BIOL 212/213 and they are older than five years, AND transfers into the college, they must take BIOL 228, unless they want to re-take BIOL 212/213.  This is for Nursing only.
  • If students have not had high school Chemistry and are not strong in Math, it is strongly recommended to take Chemistry for the TEAS test and for the program.
  •  *LPN-to-RN application deadline:  March 1 not April 1.  This is because it starts in the summer (May).  Maximum of 32 spaces.  Students who successfully complete the transition course over the summer will join the Nursing program Fall of the second year.
    • Students must finish pre-requisites of BIOL 150, BIOL 212,  BI 213 ENGL 101, MATH 110 or higher and PSYC 102.
    • It is strongly recommended to finish BIOL 210 and ENGL 102 before starting Military option and before applying.  Must pass TEAS test with the same percentages as Nursing.
    • Contact person for both LPN-to-AND ( or RN ) and Military Medic to ADN:  NEW!  Jaqueline.bateman@montgomerycollege.edu  RN/MSN
  • Past work experience not a good predictor of success.
  • RNs sit for the same NCLEX as BSNs.
  • High demand of academics and time.
  • Spring 2015.  Announcement of very exciting dual agreement signed with UMSON, where students take third year at MC taking BSN courses-- CHEM 131, BIOL 226, PSYC 203, ENGL 103, both MATH 110 and 117 ( unless Pre-calc or Calculus taken for a total of two Maths ). --then one year for BSN ( instead of two ).

RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY
  • CMAP 120 no longer required as of Summer 2015.
  • There are 27 spaces.
  • Program Coordinator does not look at GPA.
  • Only those who have put down RT as first choice will be considered. Those who choose RT as a second or third choice may be considered if the pool of first choice applicants  is insufficient.
  • Classes begin the third week of May. Mandatory orientation is held the week before classes begin.
  •  All students on the day of orientation will be required to complete a criminal background check and begin a drug screening check. Students will pay for these processes on the day of orientation and will be directed by the coordinator on how to complete/begin these checks online.
  • If a student passes a TEAS test and does not get into the program, they do NOT have to retake the TEAS test to apply the following year. It is the student’s responsibility to maintain a copy of the TEAS scores for future attempts to apply to the program.  A three year time limit is given for passing TEAS scores. After three years, the applicant must re-take the TEAS.

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY
  • For the approximately 60 qualified applicants that apply, there are 30 spaces.
  • Online blended program.
  • Usually, a GPA of 3.0 or higher.  High GPA plus priority courses will give you first choice.

TEAS Update

ATI stopped the availability of TEAS IV in December 2010, so students can no longer have access to it. Version V is significantly different from Version IV in that:

Because of the significant decrease in the number of question in English, the nursing faculty decided to change the requirements to: Reading 83% & the Adjusted Total Score 66%.

PTA and RT have not significantly changed their requirements.

This has created a great deal of difficulty for all. Students are upset that they cannot use the Version V required scores in nursing for their Version IV test. Unfortunately, ATI did not give warning that the test was changing.

Students can be referred to see Dr. Charmaine Cruise, Nursing Retention Coordinator, office Cafritz building, room 124, phone 75808, Charmaine.cruise@montgomerycollege.edu for assistance identifying appropriate resources for the TEAS.
