Computer Science - When Do New LEP Requirements Take Effect?

The wording is there, but the questions keep coming… UM COMPUTER SCIENCE LEP Requirements

Current MC students planning to transfer to UM in Fall 2024 may be mis-reading the new UM College Park LEP requirements for Computer Science page and assuming that they now need to have B’s in the three Computer Science Gateway classes of CMSC 203, 204 and MATH 181.

The UM LEP Main Page shows these choices:

  • Computer Science (prior to Fall 2024)  > for all current students enrolled at MC now who want to transfer to UM in Fall 2024
  • Computer Science (Fall 2024 and later) > applies only to brand-new first-time freshmen entering any Maryland state community college or university in Fall 2024 and after.  Affects upcoming high school students graduating this coming May 2024 and entering MC in Fall 2024.

It is not crystal clear that the newer requirements (Fall 2024 and after) apply ONLY to students who are brand new freshmen starting at any MD state college starting in Fall 2024 and after.  The wording at the top of the CS LEP pages states this, but it can be easily overlooked.

For current MC students planning to transfer to UM in Fall 2024:

CMSC Gateway Requirements (prior to Fall 2024):  https://www.lep.umd.edu/computerscience.html#transfer

  • Completion of CMSC 131 [Object-Oriented Programming I] OR CMSC 133 [Object-Oriented Programming I Beyond Fundamentals] with a minimum grade of C- = MC’s CMSC 203 Computer Science I
  • Completion of CMSC 132 [Object-Oriented Programming II] with a minimum grade of C- = MC CMSC 204 Computer Science II
  • Completion of MATH 140 [Calculus I] with a minimum grade of C- = MC MATH 181 Calculus I

A minimum grade point average of 2.7 in all courses taken at the University of Maryland and all other institutions is required for internal and external transfer students. [However, MC notes that generally, most transfer students need at a 3.0 overall GPA to first be admitted to UM]

The following guidelines pertain to all Limited Enrollment Programs: [and this one will not change]

·         Only one gateway or performance review course may be repeated to earn the required grade and that course may only be repeated once. When more than one course can satisfy a gateway requirement, taking a second course from the list will count as a repeat. Please note that a grade of "W" is considered an attempt and must be repeated.

This is the statement at the top of the CS LEP “Prior to Fall 2024” page:

The guidelines and policies below apply to students who enrolled at the University of Maryland, a University System of Maryland four-year institution or a Maryland community college before Fall 2024 and who declare a major before Fall 2028.

Students enrolled as freshmen at the University of Maryland in Fall 2024 and after, and new transfer students enrolled at the University of Maryland in Fall 2024 and after from institutions outside the University System of Maryland and Maryland community colleges should instead follow these guidelines.

More about the upcoming change to CMSC admissions for new high school students entering MC in Fall 2024 will be coming soon; for now, please help current students asking about repeating any Gateway with a grade of C understand that the new requirements do not apply to them.

As always, the best option is to refer students with questions to the UM Pretransfer Advisors -

Accommodation Letters

As a reminder, students should only be provided accommodations IF they provide the professor with an accommodation letter from DSS. This can be provided as a hard copy or digitally. Below is an example of an accommodation letter from MC DSS. Please note the highlighted sections.

  • It is from the Office of Disability Support Services
  • Provides the semester that the letter is valid for (students must request a new letter each semester, fall/winter/spring/summer. Summer accommodation letters will cover all summer session courses (May – August).
  • The students name is listed twice – once in the ‘To’ field and again with their M number.
  • Authorized accommodations are listed and are the only accommodations approved at that time

If there are ever any questions or concerns about accommodation letters or the implementation of accommodations, please reach out to the DSS or the counselor listed on the letter. We are more than happy to assist.

Updates to Academic Restriction and Academic Suspension

Date:

December 22, 2023

At the recommendation of the Academic Regulations and Standards Committee, Dr. Sharon Fechter, interim senior vice president for Academic Affairs, approved changes to the Academic Restriction (AR 7.3) and Academic Suspension (AR 7.4) academic regulations.  For many, the changes should look familiar because they have simply been restored to the pre-pandemic policy. The following changes will be enforced at the end of the fall semester once student academic standing is updated, which should occur today:

  • Academic Restriction – Students who have accumulated at least 12 Grade Point Average (GPA) hours with a cumulative GPA below 1.75 will be placed on academic restriction. Such students will have a registration hold and must consult with a counselor for review of all course registrations. Such students are limited to enrollment in up to two college-level courses or up to six hours per semester.  The academic restriction status will be removed when the student achieves a cumulative GPA of 1.75 or higher.

  • Academic Suspension – Students who have accumulated at least 30 Grade Point Average (GPA) hours and whose GPA falls below 1.25 will be placed on academic suspension. Such students are prohibited from enrolling in college-level courses at Montgomery College for an entire fall or spring semester. The academic suspension status will be removed when the student achieves a cumulative GPA of 1.25 or higher. Students who return from a period of suspension will have their academic standing updated to academic restriction and will be subject to the guidelines of AR 7.3 – Academic Restriction.  Students may appeal academic suspension to the Dean of Student Affairs.

Considering this change, students will receive an email via Starfish informing them of their current academic standing for Academic Restriction and Academic Suspension, as well as for Academic Alert.  Below are samples of each notification.

In addition, the online Academic Suspension Appeal form has been reactivated to allow students the opportunity to appeal their academic suspension, after meeting with a counselor.  As noted in Image 3 – Academic Suspension Starfish Notification, students will get a referral to the online form through Starfish; refer to Image 4 – Academic Suspension Appeal Starfish Referral.
