Maryland State Scholarships and Grants

Maryland’s Higher Education Commission (MHEC) has recently updated their Maryland State Financial Aid pages, including a very clear chart showing Scholarship and Grant deadlines (March 1 for many programs).

These pages are worth reviewing to get an idea of the MANY opportunities for both current MC and future transfer students.  Not saying that we need to advise in depth for financial aid, but we can encourage students to explore programs.

Maryland State Financial Aid Programs https://mhec.maryland.gov/preparing/Pages/FinancialAid/descriptions.aspx

Maryland State Financial Aid Resources Page: https://mhec.maryland.gov/preparing/Pages/FinancialAid/index.aspx

There are links to MHEC information on our own MC Financial Aid page https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/paying-for-college/financial-aid/types-of-financial-aid/maryland-grants-and-scholarships.html; however, the new MHEC pages seem to present information in more of a “one-stop shop” format.

I am going cut and paste these sections for students asking about scholarships:

Check deadlines carefully, note that some Maryland State Programs have a March 1 deadline to apply for aid.

Southern Management Leadership Program (SMLP) - Spring 2025 Update

Everyone,

I wanted to hop in to explain that, over the years, the focus of the SMLP has shifted from a focus on technology to one that emphasizes building leadership, teamwork, and entrepreneurial skills, making it appropriate for all students in any majors who have an interest in all aspects of what it takes to be a changemaker in their field.

If you meet with students you think might benefit from the program, feel free to send them directly to me if they have any questions--or suggest they register for our virtual open house/info session.

Thanks for ALL you do for MC students. If we haven't met, I hope we will soon! You are the backbone of our students' success!

Subject: RE: Message to Counselors?

Hello Everyone,

I've been working with the Southern Management Leadership Program here at MC for more than a decade and I want to enthusiastically recommend promoting this great program to current MC students who will have about 30 credits finished at the end of this Spring and who mention that they want to transfer to UMD after another year at MC.   The priority deadline is May 1, but applications are accepted through May 31.

The Southern Management Leadership Program emphasizes the uses of technology in small business management and in organizations.  Students participate as sophomores @ MC taking one SMLP class every Friday from 1 – 4 pm at the Germantown campus for the Fall and Spring, and then they transfer to UMD, either Main campus or Shady Grove, where they continue to take one SMLP class per semester for the last two years at UMD.  This provides students with an official Minor in Technology Entrepreneurship upon graduation from UMD, a great way to add important business and leadership skills to any major.

Almost all majors are compatible with the Technology Entrepreneurship!  Current SMLP students major in everything including Architecture, Biological Sciences, Business, Communication, Engineering, History, Information Science, International Relations, Psychology and Public Health.  Students can participate in SMLP at UMD Main Campus or Shady Grove.

And… there is a scholarship component!  Students in the SMLP receive a 50% scholarship for all courses at MC and up to 50% at the University of Maryland for their final 2 years.

They also receive intensive mentoring and support in transferring after graduating with their associates degree as well as honing the skills they'll need to become leaders and changemakers after graduating.  One tremendous benefit I’ve observed is that the roughly 28 students in SMLP at MC develop a true bond with each other and with program mentors that carries over to UMD, forming a network that eases the academic and social transition from MC to UMD and creates lifelong friendships and business connections.

There are some eligibility requirements of course:

  1. Students must be entering their final year at MC during the upcoming fall semester.
  1. Students must be planning a transfer to UM College Park (either Main Campus or USG) after earning their associates degree.
  1. Students must be Maryland residents (international students or students on a diplomatic visa are not eligible, but Dreamers, DACA students, Permanent Residents, and asylees are welcome to apply).
  1. Students need to have at least a 2.7 GPA, but higher GPAs are required for some majors (like the LEPs).

Please feel free to reach out to the SMLP Director, Dr. Razavi (rebecca.razavi@montgomerycollege.edu) with questions!

The application and more information can be found on the MC SMLP website: Southern Management Leadership Program Home - Southern Management Leadership Program

There is an SMLP Information Session this coming Friday, April 25 from 10-11 a.m. on zoom. Here's the registration link: https://forms.gle/ioU21cvoi3jk9B1S9

Accounting Scholars Development Program (Summer Residential Program for Community College Students)

Please see the below opportunity for the Accounting Scholars Development Program (ASDP) that is open for community college business students. Please feel free to distribute to your students and your networks.

ASDP is a one-week on-campus residency program that exposes underrepresented minority community college students to the accounting profession. Throughout the week, scholars participate in focused, challenging, and interactive sessions that discuss leadership style, organizational culture, personal branding, and successfully navigating transitions. Scholars interact closely with faculty and students to understand the rigor of the accounting curriculum and demystify the transfer process to a four-year institution while emphasizing the CPA exam. Networking and mentoring opportunities are crucial components of site visits where professionals address how their academic work prepared them to become critical thinkers who resolve real-world problems.

Terrapin Commitment

Dear Maryland community,

Today, we are proud to announce the launch of the Terrapin Commitment, an investment that will provide up to $20 million annually for need-based financial aid for Maryland students. This is the largest single-year investment in need-based scholarships in our university's history.

The Terrapin Commitment is designed to ensure that a University of Maryland education is affordable to all residents of our state.

The program will begin in January 2023 and ensures that tuition and fees are fully covered for Pell eligible, in-state students, who are enrolled full time and have unmet financial need. Together, we aim to dramatically reduce the financial barriers to obtaining a higher education for low-income Marylanders. Specifically, the Terrapin Commitment provides funding to reduce the gap between the cost of a UMD education and families' ability to cover those costs.

The Terrapin Commitment supports a key pillar of our Fearlessly Forward strategic plan—investing in people and communities—by creating equal opportunity for Maryland students to attend a top 20 public institution at their home state's flagship campus. Offering students the support and resources they need to reach their full potential here at UMD is one more way we proudly serve our state.

We hope you will join us in celebrating this new investment, and you will help us spread the word to students and families who want to join our Terrapin family. Share the news of the Terrapin Commitment with friends and neighbors, and find more information, including eligibility details and how to apply.

The Terrapin Commitment will help recruit the best and brightest students, build upon our strong graduation rates, reduce student debt, and provide pathways for promising students within the state of Maryland. We are thrilled to share this news with our community today.
