UMD & Possible Summer Funding for Engineering

The various departments in the Clark School will be providing funding opportunities to community college transfer students who need summer coursework in order to stay on track for graduation.  The money will be awarded to students as a reimbursement.  In order to be eligible, students need to complete the summer course with the minimum passing grade and enroll in the University of Maryland for the following semester.

Interested students are encouraged to work directly with the department on this.  Therefore, if you are working with a prospective Chemical Engineering student, I encourage you to refer the student to Kathy Gardinier at lopresti@umd.edu.

Academic Load and Academic Suspension - Spring 2017

Beginning spring 2017, the Deans of Student Affairs have agreed to a collegewide interpretation of the policy for credit overload requests and suspension appeals.  Below in black is the new/cleaned up regulation on academic load and in red is the agreed upon interpretation of the deans.

9.63 Academic Load

A.      Students in good academic standing may enroll for up to 18 billing hours in a fall or spring semester. Students who wish to take more than 18 billing hours but less than 22 billing hours may obtain permission through the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs or the Dean’s appointed designee(s). Students who wish to take more than 22 billing hours during a fall or spring semester may only receive permission from the Office of the Deans of Student Affairs.

Students who want to take between 18 and 21 billing hours during a fall or spring semester may receive permission from a counselor or advisor (appointed designee).  Any student who wants to take more than 21 billing hours may only receive permission from the campus Dean/Associate Dean of Student Affairs.

B.      Students in good academic standing may enroll for up to 7 billing hours in one summer session or 10 billing hours in overlapping sessions. Students who wish to take more than 7 billing hours during a summer session or more than 10 billing hours in overlapping sessions may only receive permission from the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs or the Dean’s appointed designee(s).

Students who want to take more than 7 billing hours in one summer session or more than 10 billing hours in overlapping summer sessions may only receive permission from the campus Dean/Associate Dean of Student Affairs. There is no appointed designee.

C.      Students may enroll for up to 4 billing hours during a winter session. Students who wish to take more than 4 billing hours during a winter session may only receive permission from the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs.

Students who want to take more than 4 billing hours during a winter session may only receive permission from the campus Dean/Associate Dean of Student Affairs. There is no appointed designee.

Academic Suspension

Students who are appealing academic suspension will now be guided to an online form to submit their request, after meeting with a counselor.  You can view the form here: https://cm.maxient.com/reportingform.php?MontgomeryCollege&layout_id=4.  This form will be linked from the Dean’s webpage as well as in an email that is generated in Starfish, as part of a referral.

The steps for academic suspension are as follows:

Status:
Student on academic suspension but has not sat out for one full semester
Student on academic suspension and has sat out for one full semester
What to do:
A student on academic suspension who has not sat out one full semester, but wants to appeal, will be required to first meet with a counselor to create an educational plan in Starfish and talk about academic options. After meeting with the counselor (counselor will put recommendations in Banner and Starfish), counselor refers the student to complete the aforementioned online form which will be sent electronically to the Dean’s Office.  The Dean’s office will follow-up and schedule an appointment with each student.
A student on academic suspension who has sat out for one full semester (fall or spring), and wants to reenroll, needs to meet with a counselor/advisor on the campus for which he or she would like to take courses.  After working with a counselor (counselor will put notes in Banner and Starfish) the student's status can be changed to "academic restriction" and the student may register up to 6 credits for that semester.  The student will be referred to Enrollment Services or the Response Center after meeting with the counselor to have his or her status changed to allow registration.

If you’ve met with a student that wishes to appeal, please create an academic plan in Starfish (for student and dean review), enter your notes/recommendation in Starfish and Banner and provide a referral for the student to complete the online appeal form and meet with the dean. For the referral, please follow the same steps as the Starfish referral we send to the Assessment Center but instead select this referral option:

The student will then receive an email like this:

ADDITIONAL HEALTH SCIENCES INFORMATION
·         Applicants who have worked in a related field may get a waiver for the 5-year requirement for BIOL212 & 213 from the program coordinator (except Nursing). They will need to contact the program coordinator to determine if a waiver can be granted. Nursing applicants with BIOL212 & 213 older than 5 years, must take BIOL228.

·         Applicants who have transfer credits for BIOL212 & 213 do NOT need to take BIOL150 unless their program of choice requires BIOL210. If the program does not require BIOL210, the student must contact to the program coordinator about a course substitution for BIOL150. Currently, the only two programs that requires BIOL210 are Nursing and Surgical Technology.

·         Health Sciences admissions will be based on courses completed and grades earned through the prior fall semester only. Spring admission (nursing only) will be based on courses completed through the prior spring semester only. (Example: If applying for fall 2017 (March 1 deadline) courses completed by fall 2016 will be used; if applying for spring 2018 (August 1 deadline), courses completed by the end of spring 2017 will be used).
  • Applicants who have completed all or some of the priority courses for their program of choice will be given first consideration. Students may apply without completing any of the priority courses; however, this will make their application less competitive.

·         Timelines for Notification of Admissions, Non-Admissions or Alternate Status
All students who submitted an application will receive written notification advising them whether or not they have been admitted into their program of choice. Students who are selected for admissions into the Health Sciences programs will be notified by certified mail.
Students who applied for the programs that start during the summer (Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Radiologic Technology, Surgical Technology, and LPN to RN), March 1 deadline, should receive notification in the mail by mid-April.
Students who applied for the programs that start in the fall (March 1 deadline), should receive notification in the mail by mid May.
Students who applied for the Nursing program (April 1 deadline) should receive notification in the mail by mid-June. If you apply for spring admissions into the nursing program (August 1 deadline) you should receive notification in the mail by mid-September

Transcript Evaluator's Notes - December 2016

  • Transcripts for majors at another campus
    • Stop sending these transcripts via campus mail. Instead, notify the Transcript Evaluator at the other campus via email on the same day of receipt, preferably before 2:00 p.m. Also record receipt of transcripts in SOAPCOL and SHATRNS and document notification in a post-it note in ImageNow
    • No need to notify other campuses but inform Student accordingly if a transcript has
      • all CE credits
      • all failing grades
      • all courses in progress
  • Exceptions allowing acceptance of a course that student has earned credit with a grade of 'D' at MC
    • Generally speaking, a course is not transferable when student has earned credit with a grade of 'D' or better in that course at MC. However, per the Registrars’ recent decision, this policy is waived if Student is in a program that requires a grade of 'C' or better in that course to graduate or if student needs a grade of 'C' or better in that course to register for a subsequent course. This exception applies even whensStudent took the course at the other institution before earning credit at MC.
  • Turn-around time
    • Please make sure transfer credits are posted within the posted 4-6 week turnaround time.
  • SHATAEQ screen
    • Remember to Initial your name and date before imaging.
    • Also be sure to scroll the equivalent bar all the way to the left so equivalent courses are shown.
  • International transcripts
    • Equivalence worksheets are critical for follow-up reviews and advising purposes. Please image them
    • Although we currently accept evaluations by WES only, we may be flexible to accommodate students who had their transcripts evaluated by another transcript evaluation company before coming to MC as long as the company is an NACES member. See the complete list of NACES members at http://naces.org/members.html.
  • Imaging
    • Keep only one last back page in each transcript to save time when navigating multi-paged transcripts and also to save storage memory in ImageNow.
  • CLEP
    • Per the College Registrar, we accept CLEP credits for students who are no longer attending MC but need college credits for CPA exam requirements.
  • Awarding generic Foundation and Distribution credits (xxFND, xxDIST, NSLDST, NSNDST)
    • Use these course codes only when there are no direct equivalents. Award specific course credits even though Student’s chosen program does not require specific Foundation/Distribution courses.
    • Use xxxDIST1 for 100- and xxx-DIST2 for 200-level Arts, Humanities, Behavioral/Social Sciences courses for advising purposes. Similarly, for Natural Sciences courses, use NSLDST1 (lab, 100-level), NSLDST2 (lab, 200-level), NSNDST1 (non-lab, 100-level), and NSNDST2 (non-lab, 200-level). The Graduation Coordinators will know to direct the 200-level courses when auditing graduation. For transcripts with a prior degree, no need to specify 1 and 2.
    • Transfer Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Group Communication as SPFDN if those courses fulfill Gen Ed requirements at the transferring school.

ENGL258- Techniques of Proofreading and Editing

For the first time ENGL is being offered at the TP/SS campus.  It is an upper level class in Techniques of Proofreading and Editing that would be great for students interested in being good writers or future journalists/copy editors, etc.  This course is typically taken in GT as a part of the Technical Writing certificate program.  The teacher is Trienne Glover and she is fine with overriding the ENGL110 requirement for students who are not pursuing the certificate.

Please direct any questions to Trienne Glover or Ellen Olmstead.
