UMBC - Language Requirement

Hello everyone,

Did you know that UMBC accepts most languages as part of the 12 CREDITS requirement?  The language does not have to be in the Gen. Ed. Humanities requirements to be accepted.  Students can either take the CLEP or one of the test below, the NYU or the Penn State University or they can take the test at UMBC when they transfer. UMBC will also accept any additional credits that the student may have taken to complete their degree at MC (in addition to the language).  For more information:

I wonder if these tests can be taken at the Writing and RD Center, since they already do the one is SN.  I am including the Chair of World Languages, Prof. Ivonne Botello.

NURSING Transfer Advising Page - UPDATED

Important Changes:

1)      ENGL 103 IS NO LONGER REQUIRED in addition to ENGL 102.  UM now accepts ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 or 103 as the 2-course English Composition sequence. (UMB School of Nursing has confirmed all of these sequences as of 11/25/19)

a.      Of course, some fine print still exists – here’s how it appears on the MC Transfer Advising Page for Nursing:

NEW – as of 11/13/19 Both ENGL 102 and ENGL 103 are no longer required to transfer Spring 2020 & after.
UMB English Composition Requirement – two courses, 6 credits - take one 2-course sequence from 1. or 2.:
1.  ___ ENGL 101/101A College Writing  and ___ ENGL 102 Writing & Research OR  ____ENGL 103 Writing/Workplace
OR – if you did not take MC ENGL 101 based on placement or rec’vd 101 credit for an AP ENGL Lang score of 3, you need:
2. ___ ENGL 102 Writing/Res. and ONE from: ___ ENGL 103 OR  _____ ENGL Literature OR ___ ENGL264 Creative Writing.

• If you have already taken ENGL 101 and 102 and 103, ENGL 101 will count as an Elective in General Electives below.
• For ENGL 101 or 102 accepted by MC from another college, contact UMB now for an evaluation of college transcripts as UMB may differ from MC in accepting credits: www.nursing.umaryland.edu/academics/undergrad/bachelor-of-science-nursing/

b.      Exceptions to ENGL 101 – some students will need to “replace” ENGL 101 credit with another ENGL course with ONE from: ___ ENGL 103 OR  _____ ENGL Literature OR ___ ENGL264 Creative Writing.  Who?
                                                  i.      Students who place directly into ENGL 102 through Placement Testing or SAT/ACT scores
ii.      Students who transfer in an ENGL from another Maryland school where only one Freshman English course is required (for example, Frederick Community College’s ENG 101 transfers to MC as our ENGL 102, but as noted above students should also check this directly with UMB)
iii.      Students who earned AP English Language credit for ENGL 101 with a score of 3 (because UMB only accepts AP scores of 4 or higher) – you can check specific AP scores in Image Now – Perceptive Content.

2)    STUDENTS WITH TRANSFER CREDITS FROM OTHER COLLEGES – please immediately recommend that students with transfer credits have those credits evaluated directly by UMB when they start at MC.  This is a simple process, as UMB encourages students to submit unofficial transcripts and will send a detailed list of how those credits will be accepted through their Traditional BSN Admissions Webpage,  www.nursing.umaryland.edu/academics/undergrad/bachelor-of-science-nursing/
Scroll down to see this note in the right column:
Find out how your prerequisites transfer.
Before you begin the admissions process, you can submit copies of your unofficial transcript(s) to us for review, and an admissions counselor will advise you on your requirements for admission.

3)      The One Additional Social Science can include an MC BSSD HLTH Health course:
a.      One Additional Social Science (3 cr.)                 From: ANTH, ECON, GEOG, HIST, POLI, SOCY, PSYC, [WMST 101 only if taken Fall 2019 and after], or these specific MC HLTH courses only: HLTH 131, 160 , 170, 212, 225
b.      And you already know that WMST 101 can apply as a Social Science also only if taken Fall 2019 or after…
4)      HISTORY courses taken as Humanities also apply in the “Additional Social Science” category, not as “Arts or Humanities” – this is noted on the Advising Page.
5)      For Arts and Humanities, CLEP credits in World Languages of French, German and Spanish can fill 2 courses of the 3 course requirements:
UMB accepts CLEP FREN/GERM/SPAN Language tests for 2 Humanities courses. UMB & MC use the same CLEP test scores, if you have earned CLEP FREN/GERM/SPAN credits @ MC, 2 courses may apply to UMB Humanities. www.nursing.umaryland.edu/admissions/faq/
You can refer students to the CLEP World Languages Sample Test so they can decide for themselves whether they are ready for the test, just Google “CLEP Language Tests” or go to  https://clep.collegeboard.org/world-languages  Students typically are granted credit for 101, 102 (Elementary Level) and also 201 (Intermediate I) depending on proficiency.
6)      Page 3 of the Transfer Advising Page for Nursing includes a General Studies STEM degree audit with UMB Nursing notes.  The GEIR notes are confusing but basically, a student can take:  For GEIR #1 - COMM 108/112 or an Arts or Hum and for GEIR #2 - a HLTH if desired, can be any GEIR HLTH if the student has already fulfilled the Additional Social Sciences requirement.  Still confusing!  But this does show how a HLTH can fit, especially now that ENGL 101 is accepted, this opens space for a General Elective which can be a HLTH for students completing an AA degree.

7)      REPEAT COURSE POLICY – Page 2 states this under Will repeating science courses hurt my chance of admission? , but not all students fully understand that UMB does not use the same “Exclusion” policy that MC uses to calculate a GPA – UMB uses all grades from all attempts at courses to calculate a GPA.  Students cannot apply for a Direct Admit to the Traditional BSN if they do not have the minimum overall GPA of a 3.0 from MC and any other colleges attended combined.
8)      New pre-Nursing students don’t need to immediately choose between MC Nursing 3+1 and trying for a UMB Direct Admit into the Traditional BSN Program when they start on requirements.  A decision about whether to apply to MC Nursing 3+1 can come after they see whether their grades in the first several semesters make them competitive for a Direct Admit.  But early on, please advise all students (whether Direct Admit to BSN or 3+1) to attend BOTH Nursing Information Sessions.  This note appears at the top of Page 2:

All students should attend a UMB Nursing Information Session
(Walk In or Online) www.nursing.umaryland.edu/admissions/visit-us/
AND attend a Montgomery College Nursing Information Session for MC/UMB 3+1 Program Info: www.montgomerycollege.edu/nursing

SAP-C - Fall 2019

When Students Present SAP-C Plans:

·         Students may come in to see you with a SAPC assignment.
·         We should take this opportunity to provide an Ed Planning appointment with them (similar to what you might do in an SAP appointment or general advising appointment for course selection/degree completion).
·         Please do not turn the student away, but help them by entering a Starfish Academic Plan into the Starfish (currently documented in the comments section – be sure to include SFAP for tracking purposes).
·         Please give the student their Program Advising Guide, which will also list the contact information for the program advisor.
·         The students should be referred back to their program advisor or instructor for questions about the assignment.
·         Counselors should not be filling out the SAPC for students.

__-

Agreement that counselors would review the SAPC's or talk to students about what they might put in their SAPC, if the student hadn't completed it before meeting with the counselor.  (The counselors would not complete an SAPC for students, only provide advising).  And that the counselors would "sign off" from the perspective of they have seen and talked with the student. A counselor could document the SAPC in Starfish either by uploading a copy or putting the selected courses in the student's academic plan.  I understand there are concerns what a sign off means-- for us at this point, it is purely a sign off that the student has talked through his or her plan with someone== program advisor or counselor-- not that it is a full endorsement or locked plan.

General Studies – 129 (Catalog Year 2012 – 2013) - Need to Know

General Studies – 129 (Catalog Year 2012 – 2013)

Financial Aid

2012-2013 catalog is no longer active, but it wasn't determined until after the start of the semester that this catalog was not active-- and so some student got caught in a financial aid issue for this (about 75 General Studies students.) This is also the last catalog year that has no 200 level requirements.  Students in this category received an email from Financial Aid and then from me/General Studies with information about updating their catalog year. I believe these students should be able to update their catalog year this semester out of sequence because this is a mistake on our part for not notifying the students before the start of the semester.

Inactive Majors

Some students are listed in 129, but didn't begin taking classes until after Fall 2015 when that major was retired and the new 611 was put in place. These students will have a block on their registration until they update their catalog year. There are about 200 students in this category. These students all received an email from me/General Studies about the need to update their major. I believe these students should be able to update their majors to something other than 129 this semester because this was again-- our fault for allowing them to register for classes with an inactive major. (there are reasons for to have happened, but we need to ensure that it doesn't go on going forward because the 129 catalog option is close to an end.)

129 in General

There are about 600+ students currently taking classes who are still in the 129 catalog year (including the two groups above.)  Since the only active 129 catalog years include 200 level credits and next year is the last year any 129 catalog is active, we are moving to get all 129 students either with a plan to graduate in Spring 2020 or moved to an appropriate other major -- one of the General Studies 611's or other appropriate major.   These students are being contacted by counselors from GT and Rockville to discuss options. These students would change their majors as normal on the normal schedule, so by the third week of the next semester as there is no need for them to have that happen sooner.

Peer2Peer Program

The Achieving the Promise-Peer2Peer Program is seeking students to serve as Peer Student Leaders for the spring 2020 semester. These are great employment opportunities for students to work in the following positions open on  all 3 MC campuses, unless specified otherwise:
·         Peer Advocates (Rockville Campus only)
·         Peer Educators
·         Peer Mentors
·         Peer Navigators

Peer2Peer Program staff would greatly appreciate your recommendations for students to serve in these roles. The application deadline is Monday, November 18th. Attached is a flyer which provides detailed information on each role. Please share this information with your students. If you have a student who is interested and eligible for a position, you are welcome to complete the Peer2Peer Recommendation Form on their behalf. The student must also complete the Peer2Peer Application in addition to your recommendation to be considered for a position.

Thank you for your support. Please let me know if you have any questions.

UMD - USG Smith School of Business

Please share the following with any MC student who has similar question. We ONLY enroll students in our program every Fall semester, due to the pre-set 2 year schedule we follow. It would not be possible for a student to start our program in the spring semester, because they would have missed essential first semester courses. FYI, below is information we share with prospective students asking about our program at Shady Grove and I've included a link to the schedule of classes students follow in the three majors we offer at Shady Grove. We require students to have completed 60 credits AND all of the required courses for our program, so it might be possible for the student to complete courses at MC over the January and Summer sessions at MC to complete the 60 credits even though the AA degree is NOT mandatory for admission. We often have 10-15% of students who return to MC in winter/summer after they enroll in our school to complete their AA degree.

The Smith School of Business is a competitive, limited enrollment program with specific GPA and courses required for best consideration of admission. Students who complete the program will earn the Bachelor of Science degree in one of three business majors and receive their University of Maryland diploma along with Smith School graduates at College Park.  You may learn more about the business majors offered at Shady Grove by accessing the links below.

The business majors offered at Shady Grove include Accounting, Management, and Marketing. Admitted students will enroll in our day-time program as full-time students, completing 15-16 credits each semester. Students enter the program every fall semester as a cohort group and are able to complete all courses for their business degree at Shady Grove. All business courses are taught by Smith School faculty. Students complete a four-semester, fixed curriculum with a specific course schedule for their business major. For MC students, here's a link to our admissions info. document and the second page contains a chart and checklist of all required courses with MC courses that match our requirements:

While the business degree received is the same for both campus locations, there are some differences in the Robert H. Smith business program at College Park and Shady Grove.  At Shady Grove:
 1. Students are admitted only in the fall semester. Due to the sequential class schedule, there are no students admitted in the spring semester.
2. The curriculum is offered as a full-time program and students who enroll commit to being a full-time student (12 or more credits/semester) for the duration of their degree. The program provides students with a course schedule to ensure graduation after four semesters and all classes are taught at Shady Grove..
3. The class schedule at Shady Grove is pre-set (see link to the two-year schedule for each major below) and is offered in a sequential 4 semester format providing 15 credits per semester as students pay a flat full-time tuition each semester.
4. Shady Grove is a satellite campus (no nearby student housing) with about 30% of Smith students commute from College Park and the surrounding area. Daily bus service is provided between the College Park campus and Shady Grove each semester.
5. BMGT core classes (BMGT340, 350, etc.) at Shady Grove are taught in smaller classroom sections, not in large lecture halls.
6. Student life at Shady Grove is vital to student success and there are several student clubs and organizations for students. Clubs offer both social events and professional development opportunities.

ALEKS Information & Access To Training Site

I’m resending the ALEKS information as promised. One new piece of information is the access to a training site that you can share with your teams to get a glance of what students would see in their ALEKS account.

Please keep in mind the following instructions when sharing these documents:

1)    The ALEKS Math Summary is public information. Assessment Centers provide this flyer to students that come to the centers for information about the test. The flyer and additional details on ALEKS appointments are available in our webpage: www.montgomerycollege.edu/assessment Please share this flyer with students as well as MC staff.

2)    The FAQ ALEKS is an internal college document for MC staff. It is NOT for public distribution. However, key information is shared in the flyer and assessment webpage. CAPDI plans to send an official memo to the MC community later in the semester with most of this information. Please share this document with MC staff only.

3)    The Internal Staff Faculty Training document contains instructions to access ALEKS as a student. The vendor has prepared this access for MC staff and faculty to learn about the platform that students would see once they open their account. Follow the instructions in the document to gain access. Please feel free to share this information with MC peers only.

I hope this is helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.

Guillermo
