Math Assessment Level and BIOL 150 (Fall 2025)

I am sharing this thread as I was not aware that students with a math placement of MATH 165 or higher could take BIOL 150 (if they are in the allied health fields) without first taking MATH 117 or higher or without having MATH 165 as a co-requisite. Apparently this information is not stated in the  BIOL 150 course description in the course catalog but it is coded into Banner.

See Dean Karpakakunjaram’s email below as well as confirmation from Pamela Jones.

Subject: Re: question from MC counselor

Hi Linda,

In my experience, there were a handful of students who assessed at a higher-level MATH (165 or higher) that were in allied health majors. The rationale is if a student assesses at MATH 165 or higher, they have the necessary quantitative skills to do well in BIOL 150. The place where we have to advise allied health majors carefully is to make sure they register and complete a MATH course as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Vedham

New MC Transfer Equivalency Spreadsheet Uploaded!

“How will EGL 1010 English Composition 1 taken at PGCC be accepted by MC?”

Look it up on the newly published MC TES Transfer Equivalency Spreadsheet!   Find schools listed in ALPHABETICAL ORDER to see MC course equivalents.   This information is on the bottom of the MC Course Equivalencies Page - and a quick shortcut to get there is to type “TES” in the MC Search box.  Course Equivalencies | Montgomery College, Maryland https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/transfer/course-equivalencies.html

Link to the TES PDF:  https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/academics/transfer/course-equivalencies/course-equivalency-spreadsheet.pdf

Not all schools and all courses are in the database, but many are.  If you see a missing course, it doesn’t mean that MC won’t accept it, it may be that it has not been evaluated previously.  You can still ask about it. When you open the PDF link, use “Control” and “F” to open a search box.

HUGE thanks go to Pam Jones, MC Student Information Specialist, for the work of pulling data and wrestling this information into a useable format, and to Sean Enright for posting it.

And the answer to the question is:
Prince George's Cmty College EGL 101 Comp I: Expository Writing = MC’s ENGL 102 CRITICAL READ/WRITE/RESEARCH ENGF

This is a good example of the need to look up, rather than assume, that an English Comp I course at another school will be ENGL 101 at MC.  And now… you can quickly check it.

Transfer Advising - Business Analytics at UMD

UMD’s Smith School of Business has a major in Operations Management & Business Analytics.  From the UMD Website:  The Operations Management & Business Analytics major will equip you with the knowledge and skills to apply quantitative and statistically based modeling techniques to data. And with world-class faculty at the helm of your education, you’ll be able to drive and influence decision-making at all levels of business. These skills are in higher demand than ever before, and provide career opportunities in the public and private sectors, including careers in energy, finance, insurance, health care, logistics, and marketing.

Students at MC can pursue our Business AA or our Business Analytics AA degree to meet UMD’s lower level requirements for the Smith School’s Operations Mgmt & Business Analytics Major

  1. The MC Business Analytics AA was designed to broadly meet transfer requirements at a variety of schools; MC has a specific transfer agreement for this degree with Bowie State University and the GWU College of Professional Studies.  MC Transfer Agreements:  https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/transfer/agreements-and-information/by-major-or-area-of-study.html#list
  2. UMD will accept the Business Analytics AA degree in its entirety; the BSAN & CMSC courses within the degree transfer as Electives to the Smith School of Business, Operations Mgmt & Business Analytics major.  All Business Analytics major-specific courses at UMD are taken at the upper-level after transfer.
  3. Students following the MC Business Analytics degree can meet all of the UMD Business LEP Gateway requirements:  https://lep.umd.edu/business.html
  4. Students may also complete the MC Business AA degree to line up with the needed lower-level Smith School Core Business requirements for the UMD Operations Management and Business Analytics degree, view the UMD Smith School Four-Year Plan for Operations Management & Business Analytics here:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1m_icN4eFJq7anYVyDxl2tGMU5N5nY33l/view

  • The MC Business Analytics degree will also prepare students to transfer to all other undergraduate majors in the Smith School of Business Main Campus – all majors, or Shady Grove (Accounting, Marketing, Management)
  • For transfer purposes, UMD does not prefer completion of the MC Business Analytics degree over the MC Business AA for students seeking admission to the Smith School of Business as an OM-Business Analytics major.

New Academic Forgiveness (AR 9.3) Regulation

I know there have been many questions about the Academic Forgiveness regulation. I'm happy to share that Carolyn Terry, Ernest Cartledge, and others finalized the process yesterday, and the form is now live online.

The process and form are available online here: Academic Appeals and Academic Forgiveness | Montgomery College, Maryland

Best,

Alice C. Santoro, Ed.D.

Acting Dean of Student Affairs

Academic Forgiveness (AR 9.3)

Instructions to students:

Students may appeal for academic forgiveness for past grades by completing the Academic Forgiveness Appeal Formnew window.  Students must meet the following qualifications:

  • The student received grades of D or F for these credits
  • The student has been absent from the college (excluding Workforce Development and Continuing Education classes) for at least 5 consecutive calendar years since the end of their most recent semester
  • The student has returned to the college and earned at least 6 post-return credits, which need not be taken concurrently; final grades have been submitted for each of those post-return credits; and a minimum grade of C was awarded in each of those classes

Requests will be sent for review and approval to the academic dean overseeing the program of study for the student in the Office of the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs/College Provost. Requests will be processed within 10 business days. Results will be shared with the Office of Records and Registration who will process the request and shall notify the student of the result in writing.
The decision of the academic dean to deny advancement of a request is final. No appeals to any committee are permitted.

SIS Hold

The Student Information Systems (SIS) office handles student data.  Usually, this hold means there is a duplicate "PIDM" (same student with two different ID numbers somehow), that needs to be corrected.  Sometimes a helpful parent or friend also applied for the student so the student needs to help MC figure out which is the true record or whether to merge them.
