The
latest copy of Transfer
Advising Pages for the MC 2016-17 General Education
Programs is attached.
Please discard the copy
sent on Wed. May 4th. This information
comes directly from the Montgomery College 2016-17 Online Catalog which went
live on May 2nd. You can see the General Education Program
Description page here: http://catalog.montgomerycollege.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=6&poid=910
There
are TWO General Education Programs in effect for all students who are new to
Montgomery College starting Fall 2016. Students will follow either Program
1 or Program 2 depending on the degree that they select.
Program 1 is essentially last year’s General Education Program and requires
both a Speech and a 1-3 credit Health course. Program 2 degrees
incorporate either the new General Education Institutional Requirements [GEIR]
category or General Education Electives [GEEL].
Why
are there two programs? Both the Collegewide Curriculum
Committee and the General Education Committee were asked to incorporate the new
GEIR/GEEL Requirements in as many degrees as possible for the coming 2016-17
Catalog. Unfortunately, because of the sheer volume of work, not all
degree programs were able to be revised. The Online Catalog General
Education Program Page has not been updated with the actual number of degrees
that have been revised, but the attached chart showing specific degrees has
been updated based on Catalog Program Descriptions as of 5/5/16.
Notes:
1.
For
all Program 2 degrees, Speech/COMM and Health courses are optional rather than
required, and if a Health is taken, only a 3-credit HLTH will fulfill
the GEIR requirement. At
this time, there are only three HLTH courses that fulfill Program 2’s GEIR
category; more may be added soon.
2.
Please
do not print out a supply of these pages as some changes may still be made to
the number of Health Courses offering in GE Program.
You may use the attached copy if you meet with new students until an updated version is distributed.

3. The Advising
Sheets have not all been updated for Program 2 degrees. Please
print out a copy of the Online Catalog Program Description and use that as a
checklist for degree requirements when advising students.
The
format of these pages is based on our previous Gen Ed Transfer Advising
Pages. If you have suggestions to make the information clearer, your
comments will be appreciated.
1. The Gen
Ed Programs Page sent with this e-mail should be considered to be a copy to
introduce you to the two-Gen Ed Program system in place for the coming
Fall. The actual list of degrees under Program 1 and Program 2 may be
changed after today’s Curriculum Meeting. Please wait for an updated
version of this Advising Page which will be sent early next week.
2. The
Catalog version of the General Education Program page which became live on
Monday, May 2nd will also undergo an update early next week.
