A
new MC Transfer Advising Page for the UM Smith School of Business is
available for students who are new to Montgomery College starting this
Fall 2016. Now you will find two versions on the Transfer
Page’s Advising by Major site for Business,
one for New Students and the older page which should still be followed by
students who started classes before Fall 2016 (including any new
freshmen who might have taken Summer I or II 2016 classes). http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/EDU/Plain.aspx?id=10187

The
change for new students is MINOR only and affects just HLTH courses: Health
courses that fulfill a General Education GEIR course for the Business AA for
students new to MC this Fall 2016 are now limited to the five classes which you
are probably familiar with having worked with the New General Education Program
2.
The only HLTH courses in General Education Program 2 for new students are: HLTH 131 Drugs & Lifestyle Wellness, HLTH 160 Sci & Theory of Health, HLTH 170 Intro to Aging, HLTH 212 Controlling Stress & Tension, and HLTH 225 Intro to Health Behaviors.

When you meet with a student
pursuing Business who started before this Fall 2016, be sure to use the 2015-16
or older version of the Business degree for graduation purposes – if a student
took a different HLTH and tries to graduate under the 2016-2017 degree, the HLTH
course may not be accepted in the GEIR section.
What
if a new student used the older page Smith Advising Page to choose a non-Gen Ed
HLTH course for this Fall 2016? Not a problem, as the Business AA has
room for two Open Electives in addition to ENGL 101, so any 3-credit HLTH
course will be a good open elective course.
Also,
just a reminder, when helping students choose electives for Business, not all
MC courses transfer to UM as electives. This is especially true for MGMT
courses – ONLY MGMT 201 Business Law is accepted as a General Elective – no
other MGMT courses are accepted for students majoring in Business. Ditto
for BSAD – BSAD 211 Personal Finance does not transfer, only BSAD 101 and BSAD
210 are accepted. When in doubt, consult the UM Transfer Credit Center
website to check transfer acceptances: www.transfercredit.umd.edu/ ,
and this info is also shown on the back of the Smith Advising Page. MGMT
courses may transfer as elective credit for other majors, but for Business
[Footnote 11 on the UM Transfer Credit Center Equivalency list]. This is
why we maintain the MC to UM Smith Advising Page where these details are
spelled out, front & back. If you think of ways to improve this page,
please send suggestions!
