UM Decisions Are Arriving!
So far today (4/22/21), we’ve had reports of three students in three different LEP majors who were admitted to “Letters and Sciences” (= UM’s Undecided major) rather than getting directly admitted into the Limited Enrollment Major that they applied for – these three students seemed VERY qualified with GPA’s from 3.9 to 4.0 in Engineering, Business and Computer Science.
If a student asks you for help, here are steps to be sure that the student appears to meet LEP qualifications before contacting UM:
1. Review the LEP page for the Major
here: https://lep.umd.edu/
2. Check the Unofficial Transcript to be sure that all Gateway courses were completed PRIOR to the start of the Spring 2021 semester (Gateway courses had to appear with final grades at the time that the MC transcript was sent by March 1st)
3. Check to see that both ENGL 102 or 103 and a college-level math were finished prior to Spring 2021.
4. Look for any repeats
of Gateway courses - remember that only one repeat of one course is
permitted, and W’s count as a repeat –
5. Qualification for a
45-Credit Review - look to see that 45 credits in college courses were
completed Prior to the Start of the Spring 2021 semester - credits
earned in Winter 2021 CAN count toward the 45 credits total needed for a
45-credit Review, but credits that are in progress in Spring 2021 to reach 45
credits will not qualify for the 45-Credit Review – students with 45 credits or
Gateways in progress will be reviewed again for LEP’s in mid-to-late JUNE in a
second LEP review.
a. If the student had AP
Credits on the MC transcript needed to reach the minimum credits of 45 for the
Review, remember that those credits may not count so be sure that credits
earned at MC or at another college in classes total 45 credits.
b. If the student had transfer credits from another US transfer school, ask the student if an official transcript was sent to UM before March 1st – ask about the student’s previous GPA if credits were earned at a previous school.
5.
Check the date that MC sent an official transcript to UM to be sure that it
was requested prior to March 1st. To check the
Transcript Sent Date:
·
in Banner, go to form SHARQTC
·
On the next screen, skip all fields and go to the last one marked “Compliance”
– click on the drop down menu and pick any printer, I always choose
“be106” just because it’s simple. The CLOSE the form, you cannot
save this choice, just click X to close the form.
·
On the next screen, SHARQTC will appear, enter the students
M# and then click GO
· There can be more than one request, the first page shows Transcript Request with a date and then go to the Issue Information tab to see where the transcript was sent. You can scroll through Requests if more than one request was made to find a transcript issued to UM College Park
If everything looks in order, then have the student write to the
LEP Office at UM, not the Major/Department as the LEP Office assembles all student
information to submit to the Departments for an LEP Review.
Here is a sample of what was sent to a student to ask about his situation:
Write to LEP@umd.edu Subject: LEP Review/Transfer Student from MC
Write to the LEP Office to tell them that you are a transfer student from Montgomery College who was admitted to Letters and Sciences but you believe that you also qualify right now for the [CMSC or other] LEP based on your completion of all of the CMSC Gateway courses and you have a GPA of a 4.0. Be sure to include your UM ID number from your admission letter…
I
am pasting and copy of your unofficial transcript below for you to include in
your e-mail… please keep me posted on your progress!
