St Mary's College of Maryland

On Wednesday, June 5th as part of the Transfer Resource Council (TRC) colleagues and I attended a wonderful presentation by the staff of St Mary's College of Maryland, https://www.smcm.edu/. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. We were informed that the Maryland Student Financial Aid Application (MSFAA) can be used by undocumented students to be considered for financial aid and scholarships. In addition, St Mary's College of Maryland along with Morgan State University are the only two institutions in Maryland which offer the Thedream.us scholarship, https://www.thedream.us/about/our-partner-colleges/.

In the past I had 4 winners of Thedream.us from high school to Trinity Washington University and the scholarship provides 50% of tuition and the university the rest. St Mary's College of Maryland's financial aid staff shared that with the scholarship students pay about $1,000 per semester. This information can be useful to our dual enrollment, early college students as well as our students who will transfer.

Here is additional information which was shared:

Reverse Transfer: We are working to expand our support for Reverse Transfer here at SMCM. This week, we sent an email to all our incoming Spring 2024 transfer students who were identified as potentially being eligible for Reverse Transfer an invitation to fill out a form to participate in the program so we could send out a free SMCM transcript on their behalf. As well, we have built systems into our process for the entering Fall 2024 students to track both incoming transfer and first years who completed dual enrollment but did not earn an Associate's degree so we can encourage Reverse Transfer. (But we are encouraging completion of the Associate's degree before transferring as the first priority!)

DREAM.US:  We are proud to be one of two Maryland colleges to partner with DREAM.US to provide undocumented students access to resources to make college affordable. The 2024 scholarship cycle has closed, but I will let you know when the cycle opens for the 2025-2026 school year (the application will probably be due in January/February 2025). If you have any ideas on how to get word out about this opportunity, definitely let me know!

Transfer Students: As you are working with students who have questions about SMCM, feel free to refer them to me and myself or one of our staff members will be able to assist them!

Transfer Course Equivalencies: One item I did not mention yesterday is we have launched the TES tool to allow students to see how courses transfer into SMCM! This is a great tool for both transfer students and dual enrollment students to see how courses will transfer. We did go ahead and program all of the general education equivalencies into TES since those are standard transfer equivalencies based on COMAR. We have been working with our faculty to try to get ahead on course evaluations for MC, but if there are any courses you would like to have evaluated that you do not see (or you only see the gen ed equivalency), email transfer@smcm.edu and we will get the course evaluated and added to TES.
