Advising Tips for Students Planning to Transfer to Maryland

Below is a helpful checklist of important points to review when advising new and current students interested in transferring to the University of Maryland College Park and at USG.

1) General Education Requirements

Students should be advised to start completing General Education requirements during their first semester if possible.
  • Students who started college prior to fall 2012 should follow the MC General Education requirements and be sure to take either a history or literature course to fulfill the Humanities Distribution requirement.
  • Students who started college the fall of 2012 or later are encouraged to complete the MC General Education requirements, including a 3 credit Health course. Students who do not complete our General Education requirements upon transferring will be required to complete the new University of Maryland General Education requirements, which are more complex.
  • Students who start MC in the fall of 2013 and who plan to earn a General Studies AA degree should complete MC General Education requirements, including 15 credits at the 200 level.

2) Using ARTSYS and the Transfer Agreements Websites
  • Students should use ARTSYS http://artweb.usmd.edu to determine courses required for their major at Maryland. These courses along with MC’s General Education requirements are best for transfer. Students starting college in fall 2012 should use the Recommended Transfer Programs (RTPS), dated fall 2012 and NOT to use the links in the RTPS to determine General Education requirements. These students should be referred to the MC General Education course requirements.
  • If a “Suggested Transfer Pathway” is available for their program on the “MC Transfer Agreements” website, encourage students to use the chart available at www.montgomerycollege.edu/transfer under the “Transfer Agreements” link for their program.
  • It is important students review all notes available on the ARTSYS RTPS and on the “MC Transfer Agreements” page. Students applying to a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) at Maryland should also be directed to the UM LEP webpage http://www.lep.umd.edu/ to review program requirements.

3) MTAP and TTP Guaranteed Admission Programs

  • All students, including those in their first semester who express interest in transferring to UM should apply to the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program (MTAP). Students should apply by June 1 for fall and November 15 for spring participation. MTAP requirements and information can be found on the MC Transfer webpage under the “Guaranteed Admission Programs” link.
  • Students interested in University of Maryland programs available at USG should review the ‘‘Terp Transfer Partnership” program (TTP). This information can be found on the MC Transfer Web page under the “Guaranteed Admission Program” link. Advising these students has become complicated, and covering these points will assure we provide consistent and necessary information for students to experience a successful transfer.
