Computer Science @UMD, limited enrollment status effective Fall 2019

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to let you know that UMD Provost Rankin has approved the Computer Science major at College Park to become a limited enrollment major as of Fall 2019.  Like program across the US, and I suspect on your campuses as well, our program has grown substantially (160% in five years!).  We anticipate that we will begin the Fall semester with more than 3,500 Computer Science majors.  Limited enrollment program (LEP) status will allow the department to manage enrollment, improve student success, and provide enough seats for its majors.

Limited enrollment status will begin in Fall 2019 for all students - new freshmen, new transfers, and internal transfer students already at College Park.  Computer Science is listed as an LEP on the Fall 2019 application.  This information is now reflected on the www.lep.umd.edu, and an information sheet about gateway courses/policies is linked from there.

Since this approval only came recently, we are developing a page of Frequently Asked Questions which we hope to have ready by the beginning of classes.  We encourage to you keep in touch with our pre-transfer advising office for additional information, and if you have questions.  Our department will also be reaching out to computer science faculty at our partner colleges to work to try to enhance the transferability of CS coursework from your campuses to our program.

Thank you for your support, and for the good work that you do in helping students on your campuses prepare well for transfer to the University of Maryland.
