MC’s Graphic
Design AFA and the Graphic
Design AAS degrees are not designed to transfer to UM. Both of these
degrees have only 20 credits of General Education courses; also many GDES
courses (except GDES 116) do not transfer and/or apply to this major at UM and
most other 4-year schools except art institutes or art colleges (MC has one
Transfer Agreement with the
Pennsylvania College of Art and Design).
UM College Park specifically
requires a more general background in core ARTT classes and Art History I &
II; in addition all Art majors (including the Graphic Arts concentration) must
complete a single world language to the Intermediate Two level for the Global
Engagement Requirement. The MC
Art AA does not have as much room in the program to allow students to
complete the Global Engagement Requirement, so General Studies HACL may be a
better fit for students to complete language courses.
The MC
Transfer to UM Page for Studio Art – all Concentrations (Painting &
Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Digital Media, and Graphic Design)
provides details about requirements for transfer, including information about
the needed Portfolio for the Graphic Design Concentration.
So to Draw a
conclusion: students interested in Graphic Design to transfer to UM
can be given the Transfer to UM – Art page located on the Transfer
Resources for Counselors page: https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/counseling-and-advising/transferresourcesforcounselors.html
For students looking at a
transfer to Graphic Design at UMBC, refer to the ARTSYS RTP for Visual Arts.
