There have been some questions recently regarding how UM evaluates and transfers AP credit and credits earned at previous institutions that have been transferred to MC. I have received clarification from Mary Bell the Credit Evaluator at UM regarding transfer of AP credit and credits earned at other institutions that have been transferred to MC.
As for AP credits, the score received must be equivalent to the minimum score the University of Maryland accepts per the chart in order to receive credits at UM. AP scores transferred to MC from College Board are basically re-evaluated when students transfer to UM. The chart can be found at http://www.tce.umd.edu/apchart.html . If you are working with a student who has a question about a particular test, feel free to give them Mary Bell’s contact information (mcbell@umd.edu).
UM does not automatically transfer credit in that students have earned at other institutions that MC has transferred in for credit. The University of Maryland will evaluate all credit from all institutions. Students must send transcripts from all previous institutions attended AND AP score reports directly from the College Board and the credit will be evaluated by UM. Please refer students to the University of Maryland’s Transfer Credit Center webpage if they have credit from other institutions at
http://www.tce.umd.edu/master.html
If a student earns an AA degree with AP credit and credit from previous institutions the lower level Core or new General Education requirements will be satisfied at the University of Maryland. Transfer credit applied to the MC Associates degree will be re-evaluated by UM for transferability and equivalency. For example, if MC allows an AP score of 3 earned in Enviromental Biology to count as a non-lab science for the AA degree, then UMCP will agree that the student has met the non-lab science Gen Ed requirement if the degree does not require a specific science. Because UMCP requires a 4 for AP credit in Environmental Biology, even though MC says the requirement has been met, UMCP will grant the Gen Ed Science category but still look for another 3 credits from another course to fill the credit total for 120 credits for graduation.
